More door staff than bar staff. Had one member of staff splitting his time between serving behind the bar & delivering food on a busy football match day. Prices looked pretty expensive before we gave up waiting and went elsewhere.
simontberks - 25 Apr 2015 13:36
See picture above. If that doesn't put you off then the watered down sauce may. Failing that stop drinking. On this planet, it's easy.
whisky_diet - 23 Jul 2013 16:57
Pretty grim! Industrial lagers, Fosters and Stella Artois. Perfunctory service. "Walkabout" must refer to the exercise one gets going to the lavs. Noisy, few seats. Only worth a visit if you like big screen sports.
Mona_Growser - 6 Nov 2011 13:28
Decent.

Good for food & drinks, the bar staff are quite nice also. Obviously if you want to watch sport in the town this is your point of destination.
Aquastar - 11 Apr 2010 20:19
Watched the Norwich v Reading game here live on the box in April 2009 after other pubs in the vicinity that are usually packed out for big screen sport shamefully failed to show the game - an embarrassment to the town. It's what you expect from a Walkabout - totally dire and symptomatic of all that is wrong with Britain today. The place scores an undeservedly high 2 out of 10 simply because it hasn't taken over existing historic premises. The pub is housed in a wannabe nuclear bunker.
BoehmBawerk - 30 Apr 2009 13:57
The worst barstaff ever - horrible beer - just dreadful
beefbeerandbaps - 7 Dec 2007 13:24
nice food (Kangaroo burgers a speciality!) and friendly service. Outside seating great for a summers day.
pubscouter - 13 Sep 2007 20:05
Toilets too far away and they used to kick you out during the day to let you in half an hour later when you had to pay - the robbing scumbags.

ted_savage - 17 Jul 2007 15:19
Walkaway would be far more fitting. 'Dire' also springs to mind.
Trapdoor - 29 May 2007 22:53
primarily a bar for watching big games, but have been here on a few work do's. nice food, quick service although its expected as the place is quite isolated from everywhere else.
vishox - 11 Feb 2007 07:40
Had some good nights out here. Cocktails are very tasty although very lethal and the toilets are an age away!!
snorkler - 10 Dec 2006 15:18
I really didn't like the atmosphere in this place, but I can't explain why. Tasty food with prompt service.
DeggyT - 5 Nov 2006 13:23
Why does this place always smell of sick.

Good cocktails tho.
anonymous - 3 Nov 2006 15:03
A big warehouse, with 24/7 aircon, even when nature has given you a cold day to start with.

However VERY tasty and good value food, along with some interesting Aussie brews that you won't get elsewhere in town make it worthy of a stop every now and again, just do it before 7pm.
Quinno - 8 Sep 2006 23:38
Boring, boring, boring, boring... A huge selection of music (8 tracks repeated), Fantastic shots (quarter filled shot glass spilt over the bar when thrown at you), when going to dance on the small stage with a few mates, the bannister nearly came off in my hands and when coming back down again (alot more drunk) the bannister nearly fell over taking me with it! Bouncers are rude and everything over priced. An absolute $h!t hole!
cushty - 2 Aug 2006 18:05
Very true!! They are always like that.

Well got thrown our for ''throwing bottles at Yates''???? Was about a year of so ago, i was there with my boyfriend and his mates happily dancing on the dance floor. The next minute we got grabbed by the back and pulled down stairs (forcefull i might add, im quite a small girl compared to them) and thrown out. We didnt know why this happened so we asked. They said people from Yates has identified us for throwing bottles at them? We had no drinks on us. Ive never been back.

It's not the worst place in Reading that you could choose to swap your hard earned cash for alcohol in. Fairly unpretentious, amazingly easy to end up totally trolleyed, standard shit on tap, despite all of which I've had a few good nights in there - it's a Walkabout.

Bouncers can be right pricks though. I'm Australian and went there with some English mates a while back - one of the bouncers screams at a tiny English girl "Did you just call me fahkin' oztralyian" and starts waving his fist at her, hopefully because he has a st george's cross ring on there. She fires back "No, but he's an aussie though" to which the bouncer replies "You can all just fahrk off then".

Tosser.
brodie_bruce - 13 Jun 2006 16:51
i like it, chilled dancing and no airs or graces
voodoopeople - 23 May 2006 22:54
A toliet, quite frankly a toliet. Bar staff slow and unfriendly, atmosphere threatening and bouncers the most aggressive neanderthals I have ever had the misfortune to meet. Have never been to a pub where the head bouncer tries to start a fight because he is perhaps bored, oh I have actaully, The Walkabout Reading. Avoid.
Madcap - 4 Jan 2006 16:04
Another aussie themed pub; just what reading needed. See people dance like monkeys, see drunks attempt new forms of dance, see women that no amount of beer can improve. Walkabout I salute you.
Trapdoor - 2 Jan 2006 14:16
I'd really like to say I enjoy this place, despite the fact it's probably got less to do with Australia than Peter Andre does these days.
Sadly, I must concur with fellow reviewers, the floor is sticky (seriously guys, grab a mop!) and the food is something I'm surprised they charge you money to eat.
I still call Australia home - but I hope it hasn't become anything like this place!
oz_chick - 28 Nov 2005 17:40
Ok, so there is a lot of cheese, the floors do get a little sticky and there are quite a lot of drunkards. Trouble is, I'm normally one of them and when you're in that state you tend not to notice the bad things!

Cheap prices, lots of sport and cheap food. Always packed for major sporting events with an awesome atomosphere and packed in the evenings for some silly dancing. Make what you will of it, I love the place!
thebigbosh - 12 Sep 2005 23:31
I totally agree with Vodka Jelly 150%, Walkabout is full of fat slobs and ugly dykes! Also they need to clean the floor, suprising how people can move when the floor is so sticky - suppose they like to leave it there for the dirty students to lick!

ME: Hi mate can I have Vodka&Redbull
BARMAN: We don't sell redbull you dirty pom, its powerhorse here, and we charge an extra 5 quid for it, is that ok?
ME: Suck me off...
BARMAN: Only if you drink my powerhorse!

dirrrtydog - 23 Jun 2005 10:16
Plain and simple, the cheesiest piece of cheesy cheesism in cheese history other than reflex of course, but thats a dedicated 70s bar so speaks for itself. Cheddar, mozzerella, edam, mini ba ba ba ba baby bell, cheese strings, red leicester, stilton, brie, goats, haloumi, the makers of these cheeses seriously need to take a leaf out the owner of this places books. It reeks of pure cheesism, this place is the reason the word cheesism got put in the english dictionary. They have cows out the back munching for their life so they can piss lump out more and more cheese.
So yeh, not such a bad place if u like cheese but if u cut ur mullet back when they went out in the 80s and chucked out the remains with any 70s and 80s music albums u had then steer clear.
Vodkajelly - 21 Jun 2005 12:46
I Luv it! Walkabout has definitely grown on me, wasn't too sure at first and they do definitely need some different music! Is a great place to go for a quick drink with mates after work to chill out, or on a Friday or Saturday to get the night started!! Bar staff are wicked, very friendly! Cheap drinks, get a discount card and get 1.50 vodka and redbull, steinlager etc. 1.90 red square! Great place overall, would definitely recommend it, only bad point is having to pay to get in at weekends!
Cheeky_Feline - 25 Apr 2005 12:36
Over-priced, hot, dingy and sticky. Also maybe the only place where you can vomit inthe doorway on your shoes by the bouncers and no-one notice.
kissy - 6 Feb 2005 16:21
Do you like to watch drunk 16 year old girls dancing like morons with middle aged men loitering, still there from thier after work drink, whilst standing in 3 inches of filth and drinking a warm beer from a plastic glass? Then you will love this place. Coridor leading to the Gents has the worst smell in town. AVOID
gobeerbuy - 13 Jan 2005 16:29
Excellent place! Girls are a bit on the cheap side, and some seem a bit too friendly with the bouncers! There were 2 particularly interesting characters in there on sat night, that I made sure my boyfriend steered well clear of! They need some new tunes too!
raver - 6 Dec 2004 14:27
Shocking chain store pub with wall to wall chavs when I went there. This may be a good pub for Reading (I don't live there) if it is, and if you live somewhere where a pub is good because there are no fights, then move somewhere else as soon as you can.
nunobensen - 10 Nov 2004 13:08
A good amosphere in here and excellent bar staff. Music tends to get a bit cheesy for me so I dont usually stay for the night.
ANDREW - 10 Nov 2004 12:27
I always seem to end up in this place.I like it cause its more relaxed than other places.Musics ok at times.Good mix of stuff.Plenty of bar staff so you can get served almost straight away.Top nights in there.Bit pricey to get in though.
Daf - 1 Nov 2004 14:54
Absolutely boiling all year.
Too expensive to get in for what it is, and drinks are extortionate.
Stuart - 5 Sep 2004 16:13
i go back to this bar time and time again as it doesnt take itself too seriously, u dont get all the bi**h fighting as u do in some places on a weekend night, relaxed atmosphere for men and women alike, helpful and friendly staff on the door and at the bar!
good range of drinks including a cocktail and shooter list.
never had problems with fighting.
the place is big enough to hide from unwanted admirers which is a bonus too!
all the ingredients for a good night out!

kellie - 28 Apr 2004 11:04
it's okay if your fairly drunk when you go in, you'll prob have a good time. However if your ever sober inside you'll think it's crap. I swear the "DJ's" play the same home made cd every time I've ever been in there, pretenders, bon jovi etc, the dj's can't mix either.
captain_cool - 3 Mar 2004 10:23
Walkabout is alright. Usually a good crowd inside and the music is always a laugh! "I WOULD WALK 500 MILES BLAH BLAH"
Rob Green - 9 Feb 2004 17:25
Good during the day with lovely food, but the same as everywhere else at night except its far far too hot even in the middle of winter
James - 24 Jan 2004 16:27
Ridiculous door policy on trainers and hats enforced at will. My friend was wearing a hat, so he took it off. They wouldn't let him in because he's the sort of person who would wear a hat??? I could understand if we all looked like 15 year old pikeys, but turns out they get in just fine. Maybe they were doing it for our own good...
Wixy - 20 Jan 2004 10:58
Wow!! absolutely fantastic!!! Me and laura love it. See you Saturday night!!!! crumpin (dance move) Great Music, Great Staff, Ama the bouncer is the greatest!!
anonymous - 5 Jan 2004 12:46
A garage forecourt thinly disguised as an Aussie bar. If you like drinking weak overpriced beer in multi-storey car parks then this is the place for you.
Jelly - 29 Nov 2003 01:42
Nice place!!! Plenty of aussies!!!!
therese - 19 Oct 2003 20:34

Staff - 6 Oct 2003 01:29
went here last saturday! paid the 3 quid then pissed off to bar rizzla. tried to get back in at 12:30, but some australian ginga (later found out it was the manager)told me to fu*k off(exact words)!! bouncer was all appologetic when the manager went inside and let me in! he also lent me his mobile to call my friend to say i couldn't get in! why arn't all bouncers like that?
sophie-windsor - 6 Oct 2003 01:11
The Walkabout roxors mighty hard! The staff are always able to recommend new drinks to try, tell them the flavour you like and i'm sure they'll be able to wisk you something funky up!
katieraa - 12 Aug 2003 12:07
Liked it alot. Young lively atmosphere. Varied music-Far better than the Bournemouth 1!!Great night out-Oh and nice lads
from Bournemouth - 30 Jul 2003 15:04
Exactly what you expect - sticky floors, loud music, pissed people dancing likes arses, standard crappy beer.
Bob - 6 Jun 2003 16:03
I went here once and my feet stuck to the floor. Grim, sweaty, nauseating place. Aussie barmaid did not like the suggestion that all their antipodean lager tasted like fizzy p!ss.
anonymous - 24 Apr 2003 11:26
an australian style pub/bar.two small dancefloors.great young atmosphere.cheap drinks.great music.a good nite all round
joe mcconnell - 8 Aug 2002 16:26
Sporty Australian Bar, good atmosphere, especially when the Rugby's playing.
They also have excellent live bands in the evening. No dress code either!!
