Primarily a back street locals pub but it does pull in a few passers by after work. I've found a friendly atmosphere on my few visits here and reasonable prices. This place is my first choice for when I'm in the area.

Found this place a block or so from my hotel. Another back street local's pub, blokes playing cards and bantering solidly. Very pretty barmaid. I had a pint of Golden Hen (I think), 3.70, which was okay. A bit insular compared to McGlynn's nearby, I doubt tourists seek it out.

Proper Irish backstreet boozer. Friendly but a bit of a barn as obviously opened out some years ago. Plenty of bric-a-brac attempts to inject character. No real ale.

A back street pub in the area just south of Kings Cross the Boot has a heavy Irish influence and a warm environment. Lots of bric-a-brac on the walls and over the bar.

A downside for ale lovers is that there is nothing on pump - if you don't want lager then it's either Guinness or Caffreys. Plenty of food was being served when I was in - basic stuff but looked and smelt pretty good to me.

If you are in the area and want somewhere cosy for an evening the Boot certainly fits the bill. The lack of real ale might deter some but I can certainly recommend this place if in the area.

Basic Irish-run pub with no real ale, pub grub, surprisingly full on a wet Sunday afternoon, so must be doing something right.

No real ales, but sensible prices and we took our children for a meal without burning big holes in our pockets. Friendly staff, spacious place in quiet street.

No ale. Big square room, plenty of people in there tucking in to some standard pub grub, although the portions looked good and prices were o.k.

As mentioned before, this place has no real ale, but it does have Carlsberg, Becks, Stella, Caffreys, John Smiths Smooth, Boddingtons, Strongbow and Guinness. There is a pool table and a plasma screen that shows Sky Sports and Setanta.

The dcor is very busy with plates, old photos and skiing gear adorning the walls making it looked a bit cluttered, but its better than having a sparse pub with no character.

I liked it in here and the Guinness was good so I would go back.

Have been in this place a few times and it's never had real ale. It's friendly enough, and on mid-week evenings is a place where you have have a quiet chat as it's not busy and there's no loud music. There's also always lots of room, so you'll always get a seat.

The dartboard is famous for aiming your arrows through the plant foliage on the right-hand side!

It does have some backstreet charm and feels like an old-fashioned boozer. The windows are the traditional type. With decent beer, it could be great. I don't think it has Sky TV.

I love pubs like this, its full of crap, but in a good way. Everywhere you look there are knick-knacks, plates, posters, mirrors, witty signs, ornaments and those tacky Ive been to or Greetings from souvenirs that everyone bought back from Spain or Greece in the 70s and 80s. Theres even a full size pair of skis and ski boots mounted above the bar. It might seem a disorganised mess but what it says to me is that this is a pub thats been around a while, probably with the same owners. It has a nice locals feel to it without being unfriendly to visitors. No real ale unfortunately. 1.99 a pint offers on Carling and John Smiths Smooth. Good priced menu. Pool table. All too many pubs like this are closing down, this one deserves to survive.

Nice. Clean, comfortable and with good staff. Really busy on my last visit, a midweek night, which I've never seen it before. No real ale, still, but Newcastle Brown is available and they've currently got Carling on for 1.99 a pint. Oh, and when summer comes, the street outside is a proper suntrap, so an afternoon pint on the pub's benches is lovely.

It's great, really, even without real ale (I had my first Caffreys in more than a decade, but suspect the Guiness is good too). I visited having seen it in the "Rough Pub Guide" - it's just a great old-fashioned pub. Nice to see well-behaved children enjoying themselves in a central London pub as well. Probably good for food too, and definitely NOT grim.

There's a big 'however' coming later in this brief review, but I really quite like this place. It has a friendly atmosphere and is tidy and unpretentious (and fortunately the outside no longer looks so garish as shown in the photograph above). However, no real ale! Even if it had just one well-kept, proper beer then I would give this place a high rating...

Chef is strange bloke but food aint bad.
One miserable owner hasn't smiled since 1986.
No hot bar staff at all.
pool table though!!!!

No real ale but if you looked hard enough there was Wychwood Circlemaster, Hen and Newcastle in bottles, albeit a little too warm. Pleasant enough and interesting Sunderland memorabilia on the walls. Dartboard was too low.

I played piano here on 05/04/1986, and passed the pub yesterday (05/04/06) which brought memories flooding back! Was a great pub in the mid-80s, there wasn't time to check things yesterday however!

A fine little place that hasn't let the passage of time and the various pub fads of the past few decades wreck its personality. Not a "cool" place, but also doesn't give a rat's arse about such things--it's just a really comfortable place to go for a pint and maybe a game of darts. Well-treated beer (one of the silkiest heads on a Guinness I've found in London) and a really genuinely nice couple as owner/managers. I've also been there for their Sunday roasts and thought they did quite a nice job of it. Definitely worth stopping in!

Pretty grim but also pretty interesting too...

Nice enough, but no real ale. Still, pleasant atmosphere and walkable if stuck waiting at St Pancras
