Catherine of Aragon, West Byfleet

user reviews of the Catherine of Aragon, West Byfleet

please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.

Currently being renovated. Outside brickwork painted white with grey around doors. Totally rebuilding the inside. New name will be "The Station". Forth name for this pub. Was The Byfleet hotel up until late eighties, then The Claremont (nickname the chavmount) until about 2010 when changed to The Catherine of Aragon. I suspect this is going to be an expensive gastro pub which will then die within 5 years and then become flats. A wetherspoons model is what is needed for this pub. Where computers can pop in and have a quick pint and snack after getting off the train. Sadly, I suspect it will just be an ego trip for someone who wants to cook fancy expensive food. before becoming unviable in a few years time. So lets see...

I could have written Beer Monster's post, strangely enough that's what we did -
1st corkers and then this pub. Could be a lovely pub, could be..no effort made at all. Typical of these types of pubs, almost as if the owners(?), simply can't be bothered, if the pub is empty..fine.
Why not make the effort here with this pub, improve the ambience! It's like a waiting room. A bit like M&S catering for all and yet pleasing few.
We are a country in recession yet we have pubs, shops etc that simply can't be bothered to make an effort, it's astonishing.
I will not be returing to Corkers or this pub, live locally but would rather stay at home!

Visited last night after disappointment at Corkers! Huge interior of fairly recently done out station pub. It looks and feels a bit stark and souless. Having said that, service was friendly and London Pride and Doom Bar were both in pretty good nick. Sky TV to watch football on a massive screen available. Food ok but nothing special.
beer_monster_smudge - 28 Mar 2012 09:17
Came in on Saturday afternoon while i had 15 mins for a train back to London.
Large pub with 3 real ales on tap, i had a pint of Doom Bar which was excellent, priced at 3.30 which i did think was a little steep, it's only 3.10 in my local in London.

Fairly empty when i visited, sky sports on the tele and maybe 7 people in total.
No compliants about this place, but i'll probably never visit again unless i really have a need to be in West Byfleet.

not a nice pub stay clear ? bad temper/ rude bar staff with over priced beer , very unpleasant experience will not be returning .
mrstevenl - 1 Oct 2011 10:42
A pub definitely on the up: still clean and tidy over a year after the refurb and with seemingly a better standard of customer than a couple of years ago.

Real ale last Sunday were London Pride, Doombar, Purity Mad Goose and fff Moondance (3.30). The Mad Goose and Moondance were in great form. The menu seemed a tad expensive but the food looked good and with generous portions.

One thing worth noting, as the football season starts again, is that they have (official) Sky Sports, an enourmous screen and plenty of room to watch the games.

An awful lot of comments by people with only 1 or 2 posts - Normally means management trying to drum up business! That said, they need to - went in the other day from the Wine Bar (which was too busy) and it was dead! I won't be going back until it gets some atmosphere, I'll get on the train to Surbiton or Woking instead next time I stay up there

Not the Claremont anymore. New name Catherine of Aragon, new landlord, new decor, new image. This pub has been transformed to a warm and friendly place. Nice menu, excellent coffee and good prices on the well kept beers. TheDoom bar I had last week was excellent.
Drop in, you will be amazed. It is a nice place to go unless you are a rowdy hooligan.
computerbob - 1 Dec 2010 10:16
This pub couldnt be any more convenient for us as we live a 3 minute walk away, but aside from being just down the road, we've found it to be quite a nice pub. The bar staff are always friendly and chatty, the decor's much improved since the old Claremont days, and the foods pretty good and inexpensive.

It's a shame that more people don't make use of it, as it always seems quiet (weekday evenings), but I think it's old reputation puts people off. We're certainly glad we gave it a try, it's a nice place to go and have a steak and a pint after work, and in the summer, its nice to go and sit outside in the garden.

I noticed they're also doing quiz nights so we'll be going to the next one.

Not good at all, worth avoiding.
Passing_By - 11 Jul 2010 18:15
Ian never had a problem with white lines, he BARRED anyone he caught using it, we saw him physically kicking a dealer out one day - must have landed a good thirty blows before he pushed the scum out the door!
katieb - 20 Jun 2010 10:07
popped in here last sunday had a nice make over owner has done a good jod pub just needs people to forget the claremont days and give it a go re katieb"s review only lines previous landlord had trouble with were white lines
poolboy - 18 Jun 2010 14:09
One of my work colleagues lives in Station Rd and even though I don't visit her often enough, visited this pub last year and the Beer tasted like cough mixture, could pop back soon as it appears to have changed.....
The last Landlord reckoned they had a problem with the beer lines (could have been an excuse I suppose) - have they sorted it yet I wonder?
katieb - 18 Jun 2010 13:10
Visited this establishment just recently.what a change, was greeted by a cheerry server, the courage best on draught was very drinkable.handpulled and no swan neck,at two pounds eighty per pint is very resonable compared with a near by pub at New Haw where it is three pounds thirty five. the decor is very clean and bright, the genys toilet clean and fresh smelling.and paper hand towles.Nice spacious seculed garden.Lets hope the junkies are kept out.Other real ales on offer were london pride and sharps doombar .

Thanks for the ad pennyg.

Now known as "Catherine of Aragon"
Recently renovated and under new management.
Pub is well decorated, friendly atmos and serves great food for all kind of tastes.
Staff very friendly, great place to gather with lots of room indoors & good outdoor space now summer is here.
Would recommend good place for evening out or even a quick drink after work.

pennyg - 9 Jun 2010 22:18
Just reopened as the "Catherine of Aragon" after a refurbishment.
There have been no structural changes, it's just a paint job and a change of emphasis for the customer profile they are hoping to attract.
Inside and outside it's very spick and span, not quite bordering on the sterile, but not what you would call cosy. Gone are all the pool tables and big screens, instead one side of the pub has been put over to dining, being a large pub this still leaves plenty of room for traditional pub style seating.
There is a roomy beer garden with a large marquee for smokers.
Doom Bar, London Pride and Courage Best were avaliable on Saturday lunchtime, none were tried as I plumped for a pint of Strongbow in the heat. The keg and lager selections were depressingly bland and unadventurous.
Service was friendly and polite and there was a relaxed atmosphere.
A vast improvement from the "Claremont" but still, for me, not a pub to go out of your way to visit.
flashharry1965 - 7 Jun 2010 10:58
Currently closed. Seems to be near end of building work so should be open again soon. Outside still looks the same.
JustCallMeH - 13 Mar 2010 21:00
New to area so gave it a go as only 30 seconds from house. 7pm on Sunday and only me and a few staff. Bar staff jumped up from seat very quickly to serve me and pleased to see London pride. Not as clear as I would like it but was fine. 3 a pint a bit steep for my pocket though. Told by bloke its a young persons pub and they don't get enough pride throught the pumps.

Sat in corner and enjoyed 3 pints. Old couple came in and stayed for half an hour, but by 8 a few of the afformentioned chavs started to appear. The sound system started to be tested with the customary "one two" and I felt it would soon be time to leave.

Good condition decor and furniture and looks ok inside. 3 snooker tables in the far bar and a punch bag machine. Toilets very clean good condition. I'll go again but only because its very close to me. Wouldn't travel to it.
JustCallMeH - 22 Jun 2009 10:16
should be described as the chavmont as that would sum it up a hell of a lot better. really pretty scummy. pride saved the day to an extent but had 2 move to a desserted table away from the rough looking mongrels and wait to see if they started a fight. outside there is a large amount of fag ends all around the pub and loads of the usual smashed bottles and lager cans why is it always lager cans such as stella that get thrown everywhere. yeah this is a stella pub. shit.
BestBeerBoffin - 23 May 2009 16:51
This is a really, really poorpub. I cannot sress enough how dispiriting it is to visit this charmless dump.
Uninspiring decor and staff and full of mouth breathers who stand outside all evening disturbing the surrounding residents with there foul mouthed noise.
One summer Friday evening their entertainment was to sit around the big screens watching Big Brother - 'nuff said!
flashharry1965 - 22 May 2009 13:53
Bit of a rough crowd all round. Would not particularly recommend, they do at least sell London Pride and plenty of TV screens to watch also.
aleman - 8 Feb 2009 12:57
Do the kids still do their homework here in the evenings?????
Beersupper - 29 May 2008 11:21
Absolutely spot on, NJJ. Only consolation was the quiz machine paying for all my beer, even though it's got a dodgy screen.
philanders - 28 Dec 2007 21:41
Otherwise known as The Chavmont. Say no more.
NJJ - 21 Dec 2007 23:10
the mont is the daddy of all pubs! if you dont like it then dont drink there! everyone knows everyone in this pub!!! its basically our lives. cheap drinks, good lively people, footy days are great! shame about all the chelsea fan, we need more gooners and it will be even more fab!!! long live the claremont! kiss kiss x x x x x x x x xx x x x x
lovethemont - 18 Nov 2007 19:57
No longer a Mr Qs pub but independantly run. Only 4 pool tables, 2 quiz machines, all the live sport you'll need and a great garden to boot! Real Ale now served along with the normal offerings, incl food and B+B at the end of August.
bristol407 - 2 Aug 2007 19:46
Best pub outside woking!
AdamHolland - 7 Oct 2006 10:54
Ive been drinking in here for the past 3 years after moving from woking, and I have to say theres been a massive improvement, what the last person was saying about trouble is total cr*p, I go in every other nite and Ive not seen or heard of any trouble yet! The beer is cheap, and the food is abit so-so, but 2 meals for 6quid isnt bad. I suggest you go back in without the blinkers on!!
anonymous - 30 Sep 2006 20:14
I've only drunk here once, but I felt compelled to add my two-pennies' worth after reading some of the reviews, for the sake of clarity.

This pub is very spacious, essentially soulless, is cheap, and has a sports screen no matter where you look. If this is your kind of thing then great - but it's no traditional boozer.

Trouble never seems far off (the result of a high quantity of p*ssed-up footie fans) and it's a million-miles away from what it probably was in its heyday several decades ago.

That it's in the vicinity of the execrable Sheerwater estate (home to the renowned sh*teholes - Bishop David Brown and Fulbrook schools) should indicate the sort of clientele to expect.
anonymous - 28 Sep 2006 13:36
Went a couple of nites ago, not bad, beers cheap, service could be improved, miserable bar staff! Food looked nice but didnt try anything as had already eaten, mind you could have managed the profitteroles!!
really good atomsphere with football on!!
anonymous - 20 Sep 2006 15:25
ilove the claremont, Katie the landlady is brill, nothing is too much trouble
kellyj77 - 7 Feb 2006 20:47
Absolute best pub on the planet. Cheap with plenty of entertainment.
stormycloud - 26 Nov 2005 13:53
American Burgers i hear you say? Two burgers and onion rings topped with cheese and bacon in a bap, laying on a bed of fries, for under 5, what more could you ask for?! 1.84 a pint of carlsberg! Good stuff!
PapaGandolf - 19 Apr 2005 13:01
Went down there for a couple last night, ended up having a whale of a time and staying till close! Greeeeeeeat
anonymous - 25 Feb 2005 11:58
This pub is awful; big, soulless, far too bright, and just generally terrible. It is cheap mind. I can't believe the rating it gets here.
ciaranj75 - 21 Feb 2005 15:58
i think the claremont is better than life itself. the american burgers are much better than the burgers from the kebab shop. the mont 4eva!!!!!
alcohol - 21 Feb 2005 09:44
probably the best pub ever. its as good as chelsea when they have robben in their side. the food is awesome and the pool tables are cheap on a tuesday. definately pub of the year.
anonymous - 21 Feb 2005 09:39
P.S. Golden Tee machine = Better than sliced bread
sarclown - 21 Feb 2005 00:12
I forgot to mention. It is well good.
traindriver1941 - 20 Feb 2005 23:50
What? The best pub in the Uk? I think so!!! Check this place out seriously guys. I always go in there for a quiet shandy, but end up staying in there all day, such is the atmosphere of the place.

Katie the landlady is a legend, she gives the pub a feeling that can remind me only of loving in a dream land.

Find a better pub and i'll eat my face.
traindriver1941 - 20 Feb 2005 23:49
Most underrated pub in the south east. Dont have a bad word to say about it!
gary2003 - 20 Feb 2005 23:46
2 years ago this pub was average. However, since the new landlady and crew moved in last year, the pub is different gravy. Nowhere better for a lovely pint, drinks are very well priced, great value food, friendly staff, lots of pool tables, sport all the way,

and the landlady, once again rules the school.

Where else could you go to at midday, and she will moves the sofas round so you face the big screen, turn the fire on, put the football on, and bring the drinks to my table? In heaven? No, the claremont. GET IN!
nikos1982 - 20 Feb 2005 23:41
its the best place to watch footy or have a cheeky pint in west byfleet. the sidewalk is rubbish and only has the same 4 people in there everyday. The claremont (or the monty c as it is more commonly known) has a huge screen, top sofas and cheap alcohol. It also has a kebab shop right outside - aaaallllllllrrrrriiiggghhhhhtttt!
anonymous - 27 Jan 2005 09:09
What a place. The drink is cheap, the staff are friendly, and the food is greasier than a 13 year-olds' face. Attractions include:

-2 big screens and numerous TV's for football
-Dartboard
-4 pool tables
-Jukebox
-Golden Tee Machine
-3 fruit machines
-Video poker machine
-And 2 huge breasts (owned by one of the barmaids)

Thank God for The Claremont.

anonymous - 26 Jan 2005 17:54
Been drinking here for about 4/5 years now, it's my local pub and all the people in there are friendly. The Manager has recently got rid of all the chavs and pikies that used to hang in there although you still get a few straglers. Drink is very cheap, football is always on, good laughs had by all.
finnigan82 - 26 Jan 2005 13:49
I have been drinking in the claremont for 2 years. I commute from Walton where i live because of its very cheap drinks and the train station being so close. The locals can be troublesome after football matches but the staff are genuine and kind hearted. A good honest pub.
clare - 14 Jul 2003 19:55
Been drinking in here occaisionally for 20 years as it is by the station. It has been revamped over and over again, but still tends to attract too many violent morons who come down for their lager and a punchup at weekends.
Sloth - 19 Jun 2003 17:09
