This is a Greene King Hungrey Horse pub and not bad at all.
Only ales on sale on my visit last Saturday were IPA, Abbott & Old Speckled Hen.
I had a nice pint of Hen @ £2.90 but when I went for another it was off as was the Abbott which means IPA that was coming up like milk for the last customer before me. Poor show in my book.
Had a bottle of hen for £2.95

Over the past 18 months i have visited the pub on 6 occasions. The first time was fine my children and i were blown away by the tv booth and the childrens play area. Therefore I award the one star rating. The food taste like frozen microwave food which can be a great cheap option to real pub grub we were not really bothered. However, when it arrived uncooked and rock hard I take exception. They are also guaranteed to mess up your order because the ordering system is fundamentally flawd because its understaffed. You could be waiting 90 minutes for desert, which could be off the menu anyway, I kid you not. It happened. Furthermore, staff are actively encouraged to insult articulate black customers who point out customer relations and systems failures. You know that I can understand what your saying are you speaking English thing they do. Then the classic shaking of the head as if to say whats wrong with these people are they mad. Like keeping one child waiting 45 min after his friends at a kids party is acceptable. Then blaming the customer for not understanding that if you place order together but pay separately you risk orders arriving 45 min later. I guess they feel black people should now their place and hold there tung. They are completely tolerant to racism they actually threw out and band black customers because they did not like them complaining about the ordering system, service and raw food. Be aware you could get insulted as a side order to drinks and food.

I have never in my life writtern a review about any pub or resturant, however given the way in which we were treated by a rude and racist land lord I feel compelled to make others aware. As a group of over 27 year old responsible professionals all with ID we were turned away from this pub for no other reason than the colour of our skin.

It is such a shame as the star has so much potential, but obviously the landlord restricts his service for a certain people.

Utterly disturbed this still happens today.

Family friendly pub during the day. The place is bland and plastic but quite comfortable and with plenty of space. Standard pub grub, with a 25% off voucher by the door. The main bar presents with a range of keg lagers, though at the side there are three casks, including Timothy Taylor's Landlord. The staff were friendly and helpful. This is not a top quality character pub, but is clean and tidy and serves a purpose. We felt comfortable bringing in our 18 month old, and found the child chairs at the entrance. An OK place during the day to stop with a child for a drink and simple food.

OK for those of you clever enough to read between the lines, here comes a somewhat biased (although fair I thnk youll agree) review of what I consider to be one of the better pubs in the area.

First off - yes in the recent past there may have been some hiccups when it comes to acceptable dress codes etc and for this (despite it being before my time) I humbly apologise. Im fairly sure the staff have not worn polo shirts at any point during their careers in this pub though since it most definitely is NOT a *insert derogatory statement here relating to a pub chain you have heard of - i choose Wetherspoons*.

Dress Code explained -
1 - if you are a labourer or plasterer etc, please kindly wipe your shoes on the mats provided before you come in, Its just common decency.
2 - no baseball caps indoors. We tend not to suffer from blinding sunlight what with having a roof. We are also not located in downtown LA so you just look ridiculous keeping it on. Security issues folks - we like to SEE who comes in our pubs. As do post offices, most other pubs etc...
3 - no tracksuits or sportswear after 6pm on a Friday or Saturday. Its no longer the 80s and judging from most of the people I see dressed like this you clearly do not jog at any point during your day.

OK. Onto a couple of iffy points. Sometimes the food can be a little variable. 9/10 times this is due to a supplier issue (e.g not being able to deliver flat mushrooms and so replacing them with button ones without asking us. Grr) Once again - something I can only apologise for. Food always goes out hot (at 75 degrees or more by law) and to the best of our abilities within a timely fashion.
I agree that sometimes there is an air of menace about the place - but can you genuinely claim you have been somewhere that HASNT?

Friday nights are awesome - kind of an instrumental karaoke where you can put your name down to play or sing songs with a local professional band. So far, nobody has murdered "My Way" or tried to strain out a Meatloaf number so this all has to be plus points over establishments clearly in the grips of recession who resort to regular karaoke. Hint - karaoke is NEVER the answer!!
Saturday nights have a different band(s) playing from around 9 til 12. If the band are particularly good (Strange Desire spring to mind) then we will undoubtedly be asking them back in the very near future for you.

Now, onto the important part; prices!
Double Vodka and a WHOLE can of red bull - 3.75.
A bottle of quality (not Lidl own brand) champagne for under 20
2 cocktails for 6.50
A list of spirits, whiskeys, shooters and licqeurs as long as this review - most of them on some special offer or another,

What more do you people want? The moon on a stick?

No sports are shown here. So if you are more of a sociable person who wants to have conversations with friends and family, enjoy a quiet night out during the week or some livelier than most entertainments during the night then this is for you.
If you get annoyed at the fact that you cant sit in the same chair, drinking the same drink, moaning to the same people about the same thing every day at the same time and wondering "why wont they show Doncaster vs Maidstone part time welders - its the decider as to who will go 9th in the table!" - move along. These arent the droids you are looking for.

Well. As my cramped and facetious fingers draw to a close on this review let me finish by saying we also have an awesome quiz night every tuesday with cash prizes and here is a list of pubs to avoid at all costs for fear of catching hepatitis or eye cancer just by looking at them

Tap N Tin - seriously. Your'e a pub. Get over yourselves!
The Old Ash Tree - unless you are known by people as Bermondsey Dave
The Old Post Office - old being the operative word there

end.

i think this pub is a wonderful pub and is being managed by a new manager since august so all the old attire rules have vanished. it has a friendly atmosphere. i think that the quiz nights are brilliant and when the weekend has arrived i belive its the best time i have with my mates enjoying the live music and the friendly staff. i have also had a chritsmas dinner ther and it is the best christmas dinner i have had in a long time

The Star Pub in Gillingham is a mixed bag. I paid a visit today and I was pleasantly surprised. The bar staff were extremely friendly and the decent music playing made for a comfortable and dare I say it, relaxed atmosphere. The place does have a reputation however and I personally wouldnt recommend a visit on a weekend night. The place manages to conj our up a somewhat menacing atmosphere during this period and there is a definite air of intimidation. Ill give it 5 out of 10 because its more than okay in daylight.

Spacious pub with nice beer garden for the summer. Has tv's and pool tables to keep folk entertained.
Usually fairly busy and good location for passing trade. Decor little bit tatty but overall not bad.
