user reviews of the Whittington Stone, Highgate

please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.

Exterior appearance of this concrete boozer and first impressions once inside (loud, hot, busy) should not deter the determined drinker from visiting. On this particular afternoon, the staff do their very best to remain friendly and efficient while dealing with the thirsty hordes enjoying the twin pleasures of a sunny day and the opening weekend of the Premiership season. Take time to get used to the volume levels of the other punters and resign yourself to the fact that the food could take a while to get to your table (though it's perfectly fine when it does arrive). Definitely more Archway than Highgate and definitely worth a look.

Functional boozer next to the hospital. Has a 1960's estate pub vibe. Plenty of space and pleasant outside seating areas for warmer afternoons. There is also a dart board. Somewhat uninspiring drinks selection and fairly generic decor. Rowdy at times but reasonable enough. Let's face it so many other pubs have closed locally we don't have a lot of choice around here.

The only good thing I can say about this place is that it's cheap. But cheap n cheerful it ain't. You get what you pay for. Avoid. (It's not in Highgate either, it's definitely in Archway. A place like this wouldn't do any business in Highgate. It shouldn't do even in Archway either).

Sat outside in the sun. Lively locals but not too scarey. Dismal choice of booze. Had a couple though so can't be that bad.

If trouble is your middle name, this is the pub for you.

DWHC organising committe repaired here after the Save The Whittington Hospital A&E March on Saturday. I was pretty dubious as the pub looks extremely unwelcoming, but we ended up having a long and merry session there.
It is a modern and brutallist building that could not in any way be described as attractive in fact I'd say that it is one of the ugliest pubs I've visited! One thing externally in it's favour is the well covered and heated smoking area.
Beer wise it is purely standard keg rubbish with no real ale. The Saturday afternoon trade seemed to be quite food led, the food looking quite appealing but was not tried. Once food ceased being availiabe the pub seemed to die with only half a dozen other customers in a large pub on a Saturday night. I don't know if this is a 'chicken or egg' situation as the afternoon staff were really good and friendly but the German girl on in the evening had the personality of a lump of wood.

I have been a customer of this pub for many years...but during the last six months I have found it disappointing. It is supposed to be a 'food pub' but this is no longer the case. The customer is fobbed off with lame excuses for the non-existent service.
The chef has not arrived or the chef is late today and we can serve you 2 hours later.
Today (24-02-2010) for example myself and three other friends were forced to leave as the only item on the menu was curry.
We departed as we were not in a curry mode. Again we were told the chef was ill.
The juke box is inaudible and certain CD's cost more than others.
Damn cheek if one is asked to pay exorbitant prices for music nobody can hear!

Popped in here for lunch after a tour of Highgate Cemetery. We felt very unwelcome as soon as we walked in - defiantely a local's pub. Food and drink very very cheap. Was very disturbed by the conversations the locals were having - friends being shot in the head, people being stabbed in the eyes. Couldn't work out if this was to put us off drinking there, which worked!

The new landlady Donna has ruined this pub. Dead every evening. She is never behind the bar - downright lazy! Taking the live football & sports out of this bar has left a definate void..... Locals have deserted the sinking ship, Donna has the charisma & appeal of a Leper!

TS77 is too harsh about this. Yes, this is very much a local's pub, and I would expect it predominantly serves the council estate located behind it.

But I thought it was a reasonable place: friendly and polite service; some real ale (I think - I didn't look very carefully); and a very non-threatening atmosphere unlike some pubs of this kind. I felt effort had gone in to making this reasonably welcoming to allcomers.

The juxtapostion of a pub of this foul nature with such a worthy symbol of London history and tradition as the nearby Whittington Stone takes the breath away. The only thing "right" about this place is its location in such a soul destroying quagmire as Archway.

Biggish L shaped one bar pub, that has setting designed for eating in on part.

A nice clean pub let down by aged football thugs, kids that want to be thugs and general dossers. Some nice people there when the hospital staff come down for a beer,.

This is a great pub with loads of atmosphere. It is a real Arsenal pub, with a great history of coaches leaving from 'The Stone' to Arsenal away matches.

The regulars are a friendly, welcoming bunch - but be wary not to upset them!!!!!

I was visiting someone at the nearby hospital, so popped into this shytehole. The beer is crap and the beer garden is 5 foot from the main road leading to Archway station.
You can hear the local care in the community psychopaths who have ditched their medication screaming obscenities at and threatening passers by.
Rubbish!

This is not Highgate, it's Archway. And this is an establishment frequented exclusively by those of the very lowest intellectual calibre.
