user reviews of the Pitcher and Piano, Fulham

please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.

Closing this week after decades of business - very sad to see it go, but the mass exodus of antipodean working holiday makers that kept it afloat with Sunday evening parties kick started it's decline. Towards the end, on the average week night you'd have been lucky to see more than a dozen or so people drinking there, and sometimes half that. This place was an institution for many, many years but ultimately, a massively refurbished and relaunched bar across the road attracted more trade, so the P&P were left with the die-hard regulars, despite offering better prices and friendlier staff.

The place had the best staff in all of Fulham, and nowhere else could touch it for that. It struggled with producing good quality food but it wasn't bad by any means.

Ultimately, one of the giants of this end of Fulham with a worldwide reputation and history, has fallen. Rumour has it that a licensed venue is already lined up to replace this one, so we will see what will become of it.

Now badly in need of refurbishment the P&P on Fulham Road was the first of the brand to open in the country in 1986.
Sadly it has fallen into massive decline and has gone from being one of the busiest pubs on the strip to the quietest. Rumoured to be closing a fortnight today, how the mightly have fallen.

The P&P is a the biggest pig pen EVER. I was led to believe that it was a pleasant place, however, I popped in for a pimms on Sunday and was shocked to discover the plethora of penis that was looking for some pussy to penetrate. The food tasted like puss and made me puke. There was poo and pee all over the toilets floors and when I finally got the bar man to pull a pint it got knocked over by plonker pashing a phat pig. All in all it was pure piggery.

As the original Pitcher and Piano, the Fulham bar has maintained its authenticity through means of atmosphere, yet grown with the times to become the perfect meeting spot on Fulham Road. There is a decent, eclectic menu of food and drink, with the cocktails, in my mind, reigning king. The latest creation, called Finish in the Pink, is a peculiar combination of Rose wine teamed with vodka and muddled with fresh berries. I never thought such a mix would be so tasteful! The bar has a very welcoming vibe, and the staff are always willing to accommodate our varying requests (with a smile on their face)! Like all good home from home bars, P and P has a terrific menu. The grub is well priced and the portions are generously sized getting you value for your money. Great selection of burgers made with prime British beef and lamb that will satisfy the hungriest of people. If burgers dont tickle your fancy, there are plenty of alternatives, including a range of salads, open sandwiches and light bites, all of which are as mouth-watering as the next. As a professional, I enjoy the bar to get away from the meat-market culture familiar to a number of the surrounding bars. Its the perfect location for all occasions.

A bit expensive and pretentious.

The sunday ozzie meat market in the evening is a laugh but on the other days of the week it is a smart hang out where you can look out on to Fulham Road which is pretty cool and enjoy a nice drink whilst not thinking of the price!

:) I do actually go to this pub sometimes so I will post a 'proper' comment.

Very strange pub that is pretty much emtpy all week until Sundays when it becomes a meat market for all antipodeans. Its not such a bad thing as anyone can get lucky (at the time after 10 pints of snakey B) but the comments about getting to the bar/toilet/anywhere are true.

Indeed very busy on a Sunday pm. Attracts Australaians who enjoy nothing better than Colombian line dancing (or was it pro-plus?), sexy wannabee yummy-mummies, and now and then a Premiership Rugby team in dungarees and little else.
Cannot knock it for being popular but gets so so overcrowded. Getting served or relieved downstairs is a mission in elbows-out excuse me's.
Best to order three bottles of wine, find a spot and stay there. Dancing on chairs is permissable, but not on the tables. When I was there, 3 kiwis were on the bar trying to be Coyotes. Failed, but amusing.

Exhausting.

a que forms here at 3pm on Sundays. And why so popular? Clearly a hunting ground for Aussies and city types, without their ties, to pick up some skimpily clad young ladies. I had the misfortune of standing next to a group of gobshites drinking champagne and smoking cigars. No room to move, and any trip to the bar or toilet is reminiscent of Run The Gauntlet. Basically, it's a meat market.

Another Fulham place whose popularity I can't understand. Pretentious and expensive. Food is pretty poor for the price.

The Sunday nights here are indeed legendary - I came a few times three years ago. Full of the kind of dreadful aussies some people seem to love. If this is your scene be my guest. And stay in West London.

Sunday nights here are known locally as 'last chance saloon'. If you're into Australians getting drunk and pulling anything that moves, come here.

If not, come to my house.

The monday mornings generated from debauched sunday nights are more than worth the sacrifice. Get down with your mates, have a steady session and wait for the place to crank up at about 6.
Legendary.

Recently refurbished and is now quite a chilled out pub on weekdays and even on Saturday nights. Food is average but mix a few stellas and it all tastes good! On Sundays though there is often a queue of around 50 metres to get in as the place goes mental from aroun 5pm! I don't know what everyone else is going on about, (Dave and Gino) "tablecloth shirt and white shoes" and "if you're over 22 forget it." I don't wear tablecloth shirts or white shoes, I'm over 22 and always have a great time here. Yes it's busy on Sundays but where else can you party hard on a Sunday..??
Andrew - 19 Feb 2004 15:36
Sometimes they have some good live bands but it is a very young pub. If you are over 22, forget it.
Dave - 12 Jan 2004 18:00
You will need to be wearing a tablecloth shirt and white shoes to fit in here. Full of "Geezers" although the women r supreme on a Sunday. Go across the road to the Durrell if you are after a drink.
Gino - 14 May 2003 16:18
The best and most debauched pub in South London.
Morgs - 15 Apr 2003 14:52
So busy the bar is 8 deep on sundays. Full of women who seem to have never met rugby players before and insist on squealing lots. Don't bother!

Damn fine fillies to be found frollicking on Fridays. Ripping fun!
