please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.

I wasn't expecting much from the Duke of York. But as Wobbly Bob says, I got a warm welcome. There were 4 ales on - Duke of York House Bitter, Salopian Lemon Dream, Enville Ale & Marston's 61 Deep. Much to my surprise, they also had Weston's Old Rosie. So what better way to start a crawl of Wolverhampton pubs at 10am in the morning with a 7.3% cider! The pub itself, like many around had opened at 8am, as Wolves were playing at home. Away fans are not allowed. So I pretended not to be one! Nice, traditional interior. Sky Sports was on the TVs. There were already a few in at 10am. Moved on from here to the nearby McGhee's, where there was one other customer, but no real ale. So I won't bother requesting it to be added to the site.

Pleased to report this pub has now reopened as the Duke of York. Simple solid wood furnishings and boarded floor; outside drinking area at the back is a great sun-trap. Friendly welcome and well-kept real ales. A choice of five on my visit and both the house beer (do not know who brews it) and the Salopian Lemon Zest were on fine form. Friendly welcome and well worth a visit. 8/10.

Currently closed and is being renovated so fingers crossed that it improves

What's supposed to be a quality ale pub is poor. I had only had half of my bitter before forcibly spewing it back up. The beer was so off it stank. Needless to say we abandoned and went elsewhere. Horrid clientele as well.

A group of us visited this pub based on its rating in BITE. What a mistake. Apart from the fact that it is badly in need of redecorating (preferably with napalm) one of our party had a pint of Banks' Mild which he struggled to drink and I had a pint of something that might have been drinkable when it left the brewery. As far as we are concerned it is only worth visiting if there is nowhere else to shelter from the rain.

RCH Double Header and Enville on. I wasn't overly impressed with the RCH but the ladies raved about the Enville. Reports posted below are accurate.
I won't hurry back!

Called in here after the posada, what a double whammy, summer lightning below average, better quality than posada....just, think camra need to check their gbg enteries around here.

Hopback Summer Lightening. Wye Valley HPA and a Salopian on offer when we visited. Beer quality and service were fine but the msic was rather too loud.

Basic ungentrified city-centre boozer, which was pretty busy on my visit with all kinds- boisterous but not unpleasant. I completely concur with Archivist about the clientele! It's a bar room and two small snugs, but some opening out makes it feel more like one L-shaped room around the bar. An abundance of TV screens show football in most areas of the pub. On my visit Wye Valley Butty Bach and Summer Lightning were available. Tried the former which I somehow knew wasn't going to be in great condition, and it wasn't, but was drinkable. I wouldn't take a lady in but enjoyed it as a proper pub experience, but the ale quality means I might skip it next time. Perhaps it was an off day. All in all worth a pop.

Wye Butty Bach and Titanic on yesterday - noth in excellent condition. I liked the pub - got into an interesting conversation with some blokes from Walsall who were on a bit of a crawl. I'd certainly return here.

The exterior is very traditional, if painted a little garish and the interior has several rooms, including a 'snug' and old Wolverhampton photos on the walls; though it is fast looking shabby.

In all my visits the choice of beers has been good, sitting along side the usual stuff, there is Banks's MILD and 4 real ales; Butty Bach, Kinver Centurion, Burton Bridge Stairway to Heaven and Holdens Golden Glow. The Stairway to Heaven was decent. The service friendly.

The clientele is unique. A microcosm. An agglomeration of; decent people, the best of Bedlam, the f***ing Tourette's Society and scrapings from the tank at the Sea-Life Centre.

Around the corner from the Posada I found the Tap & Spile. Wye Butty Bach, Golden Glow and Ludlow Gold this small pub was packed with fans watching the late game.

I walked into the pub and everyone turned to look at me. The League of Gentlemen sprung to mind. There were 4 cask beers on, I tried Ludlow Boiling Well, this wasn't really to my taste but there was nothing wrong with the way it was kept. The pub could do with a general spruce up but overall I liked it.

Basic but interesting 'back street' pub (despite being very close to the town centre). Perhaps I caught it on a bad day as there were only two real ales on, but the Titanic Iceberg was good and came at a reasonable price.

No frills old style city centre boozer, spoilt only by unnecessary big screen plonked in a corner.Excellent choice of beers for all tastes - Holden's Golden Glow, Hop Back Summer Lightning and Ludlow brewery ales when I visited, usually a choice of Shropshire beers, often Titanic beers. Impressive selection of bottled ales hiding in the fridge too - Hobgoblin, Bishop's Tipple and many more. Traditional fruit wines for the more adventurous. Popped in here before a Wolves game once - never made kick-off.

Very basic "back street boozer" with similar clientel. Average Cask Ales mainly small local samey breweries, in need of some classic.

This establishment can be compared to a rare vintage wine. Very matured, full bodied, and surprisingly enjoyable on the pallet. By this I mean:

Very Matured - The pub is a dying breed. Forget the chrome seats, flashy sofa's and special lighting. This is a spit and saw dust ale house. The sanded wooden decor, the glazed windows above sections of the bar, the very obvious antiquated tables and chairs, the smoke tarded paintwork on the walls and ceiling and the holed walls around the dart board all come together to make this a unique architectural phenomenon. You could not replicate a matured wine and the same applies here.

Full Bodied - By this I mean the landlord has struck the right blend of real ales and new contemporary drinks. There is a drink for all ages but the main focus is definitely the real ales (all on hand pulls). It turns out that many of the CAMRA chaps enjoy a tipple here.

Surprisingly enjoyable on the pallet - Apart from the obvious (the taste of the beer) I was surprised at the prices. Very reasonable - just over 2 a pint - bargain in this day and age. The other surprise was the locals; many of whom appeared to have weathered a few jars over the years. (many looked like a candle which had been lit for years by this I mean the wax mad melted) They were a strange bunch but at the same time extremely friendly. All of this generated a nice friendly warm atmosphere.

Overall an unusual boozer but great beer, nice locals.

I accidentally stumbled across this pub whilst wandering aimlessly through Wolverhampton City Centre trying to kill a couple of hours. In short it is a rough and ready, dated, old fashioned place and the floor, pre smoking ban, was littered with discarded fag ends. The walls and ceilings are ingrained with generations of cigarette smoke and yet in a certain way, the smoking ban will probably detract from its character (my visit was pre-ban). The interior appears to have changed very little in the past 30 years and the worn and battered furnishings and dcor give the place a certain charm that is hard to find in this day of plastic pub makeovers. There are a few snugs and anti rooms, the small snug to the right of the door as you enter being of particular note with its own little serving hatch. The customer base is a mix of strange but seemingly harmless characters, many of who are in various stages of liver malfunction. There is a selection of quiz & fruit machines, a small TV at the rear and an awkwardly positioned Big Screen that takes out a big chunk of seating when in use. The big bonus is the excellent beers that included Landlord, Banks and Stairway To Heaven on my visit and pretty cheap, especially when you are used to London prices. The pub wouldnt be to everyones taste but if you like no nonsense boozers with a bit of character and decent beers, then this is an excellent choice.

Called in while doing a crawl and loved the old fashioned interior but HATED the big screen which really does nothing for the pub. A great pub to wander round the rooms. Snug and a room at the front have serving hatches into the bar area. Great beer and friendly atmosphere.

Loadsa real ales including "Stairway to Heaven", "Broadside", "London Pride", "Banks's" & Boddingtons Bitters as well as "Old Rosie" scrumpy, Guinness and the usual chilled Lagers all priced between 1.60 & 2.10.

This is a brilliant old style pub, one of the best in Wolverhampton pity its let down with the MILD which is only Banks's smooth. At 1.70 a pint you can't complain especially when compared to the Saracens Head in Dudley where only last night I was ripped off for 2.55 for a pint of Hansons MILD.

Quality beer, quality atmosphere, freaks everywhere, loads of domino masters and unbelievable dart players. The majority of people agree the head barmaid has a foul tounge. The landlord is polite and has a full set of hair.
theoneandonlyapple - 28 Mar 2006 15:15
Good beer and dodgy regulars.
Uncle_Dunkel - 26 Feb 2006 19:56
All the characters of Wolvo go in here. Can be smokey, You have got to go in just to see the foulest mouthed barmaid in the country. Never had a bad pint in here , excellent range of traditional beers.
shaun11 - 31 Jan 2005 08:06
Two tier area either for food or entertainment/boozing watching the big screen!

Never had a bad pint here, food looks reasonable and the laid back atmos stands out more than anything, chocka' weekends with the young pre clubbers brigade.

What can only be described as an old school local boozer. Prices are extremely reasonable, they carry an excellent selection of ales. Scrubbed wooden floors and table tops and a big screen that seems to takeup approximately 2/3rds of the pub add to its charm. The scary looking locals are a nice bunch, just don't go in there in your Evisu jeans and Gucci shirt and expect to blend in.
