4th pub of the day while I was dragging the wife and friends (one of them was driving) around Dartmoor and the surrounding area.

Quaint little pub situated in the centre of this small village.

The front bar was full of tables that were reserved for diners, while the back room had a pool table and a small seating area. Further to the back of the pub and towards the toilets and beer garden is a large function room and another bar.

Busy bar with 3 locals sat enjoying their beers and a chat.

4 ales on which were Fullers London Pride and 3 offerings from Red Rock. I opted for pints of Red Rock's Pale Ale and a Best Bitter, both decent but the Pale Ale was better.

Nice enough pub with low beams throughout and fully carpeted.

Again a tick for me

I'm amazed to find that it's nearly 5 years since I last visited this place, but I was delighted to find that it was just as I remembered it. It calls itself Moreton's traditional pub, and that's just what it is - a real focus for the local community. Good beer, good atmosphere: excellent.

The best pub in Moreton by far.
This was the first pub my friend and I went to on our Moreton pub crawl.
We should have just stayed in here all night! We thought all the pubs would be great but this is not so.
This is the only pub i would go back to in this village.

9/10

Liked the pub a lot, though beer possibly suffering a bit from early in the day and week syndrome. Friendly, and liked the mini-museum on the way to the loos !

Had a long w/e in Moretonhampstead, visited the Union Inn on 1st night after reading reviews in BITE. Wonderful pub! Excellent Union Bitter, best prices in town, excellent food, ate there every evening. Very friendly, welcoming staff and locals. Try to have a chat with Chris (has a beard and a dog), had a very interesting long conversation with him. If you're in Moreton, you've got to pay the Union a visit!

As all the other pubs in this part of Dartmoor appear to be shut on a Monday.
We ended up here for lunch. Glad we did. Lovely place. Nice welcome. Beers under the pub name. I didn't ask who brewed them, but my glass had a Red Rock Logo. Very nice pint, with a a sign saying the Mild proper Lager available soon. London Pride also on one of the pumps.

The food was very tasty and freshly cooked at a reasonable price.
Will definatly be coming back next time in Morton.

Unless you are after up market food, this is the best of the four pubs in the middle of Moretonhampstead.
Locally brewed beer (under the "Union" brand) and locally produced cider predominates. This is all available at 2 per pint (generally 2.70 and upwards in the other three pubs).
Marvellous entertainment is provided by both the local collie dog playing pool (it jumps up and nicks the cue ball off the table) and the uncoordinated humans ambushed by the "farmhouse" cider.
Take a look at the historical exhibits in the corridor down to the gents. Apart from making clear that this is a long-held family establishment, there are archaelogical items. These now include plastic ashtrays which "reasearch suggests" were used to put out cigarettes in olden times.

Well worth a visit.

What a wondeful pub. Didn't care for either of the 'White ' so looked around a bit more and found the Union.

Great beer and food and a wonderful welcome from 2 out of 3 staff (the ladies, not the chap on Friday lunchtime who F'd etc. at the bar all the time).

Highly recommended

been to Moreton plenty of times from Plymouth, however i have missed going to this pub! how, i don't know! i have usually frequented the bell, never again after my visit to the union! great little pub with genuine locals that like to chat. Was in their on Saturday 13th June and was looking for some where to watch the Lions game, saw they had a big screen from reading the sign outside the pub, went in and politely asked if they were showing the rugby, they said not at the moment but we can't see why not, and there behind a well made wooden case was this 40" screen. The young lady that was behind the bar did everything in her power to make us welcome and so did the 6 or 7 locals in their, they had 3 ales on and Gray's Farm cider from the barrel, i tried teh London Pride which was in top order.

great pub, great Village, will be back

What a shame, despite an excellent meal and a well kept beer, I will not be returning here. My visit was let down by one thing, the unpleasant, unfriendly, everything too much trouble cock(ne)y barman. I enquired about food, and as I was looking at the menu, he poured me a drink and immediately charged me for it, despite the fact I was clearly about to place a food order. Then 30 seconds after paying for my drink by cash, I paid for my food by credit card, there will be a charge as it is under 10. If I had paid for the drink at the same time it might not have been under a tenner! He rolled his eyes impatiently when another customer was ordering. I felt very unwelcome.

Great little pub run by a 'character' born in the village. Food good. Beer good. Local characters.....last of the summer wine..........No need to say more really

On brief acquaintance, this seemed to be the pick of Moretonhampstead's pubs. Friendly locals and a pleasant, relaxed atmosphere, which was only enhanced by the landlord's apparent potential for explosion at any moment; he seems to be a real character, the kind more pubs need.
A good range of beers; The Butcombe that I drank was in first rate nick. I didn't eat there, but on my second visit, large numbers of people were doing so with apparent relish.
I'll certainly call again if I'm in the area.
