user reviews of the Tooting Tram & Social, Tooting

please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.

Horrible place, like an outmoded indie victorian style public toilet.

Pretentious and overpriced. Don't even go there ...
ROBERTA - 7 Aug 2012 14:28
Incidentally, it hasn't been an It's A Scream pub since the Tramshed days, now it's an Antic pub.
Groovehound - 18 Dec 2011 16:21
One might say that this place is part of the gentrification effort that's somewhat going on in Tooting. That's so far a good thing, as it's been hard to find a decent pub round here for a long time. This place is a bit more expensive at the bar, but you get pleasant, even friendly bar staff and this also pays for the free nights that happen here regularly, more or less. A net gain for Tooting, along with the Antelope. Manners are not just ones stance on personal interaction, they are how a business treats its customers in general, and they are on the right side of the balance here.
Groovehound - 18 Dec 2011 16:18
I was a bit disappointed to find this pub didn't open until 1pm. Whilst most other local pubs were open and showing live rugby or football on their TVs, this place was empty shortly after opening with all TVs off. Sitting on your own in a large shed means not much atmosphere. The beer range was also a little disappointing with Purity Pure Gold & Mad Goose along with Marstons Pedigree. The best cider options are Stowford Press & Aspalls. Service was fine and the interior is quite impressive. Original tiling is still on the walls and similar to the Antelope just up the road, it has a multitude of different furniture items. There is also a balcony area high up in the shed. By the looks of things, this is probably more of a late night venue and is probably more nightclub than pub. I can't imagine many other pubs charging 1 to hang up your coat! A different experience, but not really my cup of tea.
blue_scrumpy - 16 Oct 2011 17:08
Here early evening Wednesday. Pride and a decent pint of Purity Mad Goose (3.30). Not busy and a friendly welcome from the staff. Big sofas, candles on tables - you get the idea. Certainly worth a look but I walked straight past initially, it's set back in a courtyard.
GuideDogSaint - 20 Sep 2011 19:24
It's a gorgeous looking bar, worth the price of a half alone for a look at the balcony area. Beer was better than in the antelope, staff friendly, though I was visting late p.m.
mtaylor40 - 5 Aug 2011 20:47
Ten of us went here on Saturday night and I have to say the atmosphere was great however the DJ was crap. Oh my word he did not have a clue. We certainly didnt or more like could'nt dance the night away.!
Great for a drink but dont expect to let you hair down and go wild if this is the resident DJ. More upbeat tunes and a flow of good music would be in order rather than slow/fast/slow/fast/dull and just a tone deaf DJ
Jobi - 5 Jul 2010 12:25
I went along a week ago and had a great night out. It was a Saturday night and yes the place is huge and packed but the atmosphere was great. Music was good too - DJ playing some great non-cheesy stuff. Unlike the last reviewer, I thought the bar staff were great - smiles and manners all round always does the trick for me, and this place is no different. So if you fancy a great night out with a bunch of mates and you're in deepest South London then definitely give it a go.
timbrown2002 - 8 May 2010 07:46
I go to the BBC in Balham a lot and like it, but decided to try the Tramshed last Saturday with a bunch of mates... what a load of R U B B I S H. And I REALLY mean it. Why does the Antic Co. STILL continue to employ such rude, obnoxious, arrogant numbskulls?

Most of them just stare at you from their high and mighty bar, taking your hard earned cash in return for an extremely sarcastic comment (every time!) while throwing your change back at you.

The simplest of questions one would ask in a pub always gets an impertinent brash reply in the Tramshed. Dunno why we stayed there, we'll not be going back for sure.

I've seen this a few times with the staff at the BBC when they rotate employees from one pub to another. Other punters have lost their temper on this, quite rightly so. One day you'll find your pubs empty (apart from has beens too hammered to care) and wonder why...

When will you lot learn? It was busy on Saturday, granted, but O N L Y because punters want a late drink. That's the only reason we all go there!

I recommend that anyone reading this should go somewhere else, and I hope that someone from the Antic 'chain' reads this too!!!

A shocker of a pub, don't bother, you'll only end up in an argument with spiteful staff and get barred in the process.

Now, back to work, I didn't get where I am today by writing reviews like this.
TootingPubGoer - 26 Nov 2009 12:25
Snigger....looks like quaffeur was so drunk they thought Mike was the manager......
rjbradburnesq - 14 Oct 2009 19:25
Potentially a great venue, badly let down by officious management. When not hassling customers for imagined offences, the manager can be found perched on his stool with a pint and reading a book in front of his overworked staff. The staff themselves are very pleasant; unfortunately the same cannot be said of the manager. I would drink here but only if there were a change of manager. Fortunately, there are other good options in Tooting.
quaffeur - 14 Oct 2009 12:28
WOW - what an amazing oasis in Tooting - this place is amazing - Saturday night - excellent DJ, not one dodgy tune - place was packed, but none of your rude london type of people - loved the party atmoshphere - :-)
SuzieCas - 27 Sep 2009 12:58
I agree that the place is beautiful and I actually found the bar staff very pleasant. My problem with the place was the door staff. They were incredibly rude and aggressive with my friend (a 5ft blonde) for using her phone on the stairs. When they decided to throw her out (for asking whether signs could be put up to warn people not to use the phone) we left with a very bad taste in our mouth. They were overzealous and actually caused greater disquiet and upset a lot more people than the original "offence" warranted.

What a shame.

Mrs_Roo - 28 Mar 2009 15:35
adam1974

have you not sussed it out re the food yet ? its because they cant do it well and consistantly !

all the venues owned by antic=ltd.com hardly touch the food aspect but are great venues within themselves and thats the usp here , again.

great venue but i'd hate to be balancing the books on this one....... ooeergghh !
petey.p - 13 Mar 2009 17:57
Wow this place has changed since the days of the Tramshed. We could never get in before due to police closures....!

The decor is delightfully tasteful, the bar staff are polite and efficient, the loos are spotless and nicely done out, there's plenty of seating, and the atmosphere on a schoolnight is nice and intimate.

Two things though: Why oh WHY do they not do food? We had to leave and spend our money elsewhere! And they have a nice protected area outside which could be a little bit more smoker-friendly - there are no heaters at all! Brrrrrr.

Anyway - great boozer, and pikey-free. Well worth a visit.
Adam1974 - 12 Mar 2009 12:46
monkey boy supreme , should you not have been at your local that you love ? where 'The staff are cool and fun and beer is good.'

yes this cavernous beast of a venue is bloomin awesome. It should be with the money thats been thrown at it PR wise and fit out cannot be faulted.

its great that tooting now has a reason not to leave !
mikeh1 - 6 Jan 2009 19:16
Had a great time on NYE, surrounded by hotties, served by pleasant staff.....drank lots of fizz. Jolly good!

monkeyboysupreme - 4 Jan 2009 21:04
Ha ha! Did you go to the same place as me?
I so want to love this place. The venue is fab and is chilled but the bar staff are pants when there is more than three people waiting for a drink. They get a bit confused about who is next. Quite frustrating for a customer really.
What is going on I ask myself? Especially when their other bars are so organized, dogstar and the bar in Herne Hill.
Sort out the staff guys and you'll have an sh*t hot place!

Brie - 31 Dec 2008 00:57
I love this place.
It looks amazing, the service is always good. The staff are helpful, know their stuff and are able to recomend beers or wines.
They are always playing great music and it's a nice place for a sunday afternoon pint or a raucus Saturday night out.
They will be doing food soon which will make it even better.
This and The Manor are just what the area needs

rinky - 7 Dec 2008 11:06
This place is ace. Felt like we were walking into Narnia the first time we visited (had never been before the revamp). Great beer selection, friendly staff and almost never have to wait too long at the bar. Only thing that stops it getting a 10 is the lack of food (come on, how about some bar snacks guys??) and they could maybe do a little better on the wine choices.

Fantastic and eclectic decor, decent staff, delightful toilets, buzzing clientele and lots of comfy seats. Free hire for parties too.

Brilliant bar!
Clarky80 - 3 Nov 2008 15:35
Brilliant, love it.
twitcher - 19 Oct 2008 22:36
what a hidden gem, great music, comfy chairs, nice bar staff, who would have thought Tooting had a pub like this?!
MrCeiling - 3 Oct 2008 11:25
Good place this. Used to be horrible, now ots got cool decor, stays open late and isnt as arsey as it potentially could be. if tooting had a media set, they'd probably come here. A big telly as well for when the lady has a birthday on a wednesday night- that happened to me. They kept the sound down on the telly, but the picture was perfect.

Cracking.
Stout - 4 Sep 2008 17:14
Keep up the good work guys!!!!
rockd1509 - 9 Jun 2008 17:43
I'd all but given up with Tooting, opting for a bus ride to Earlsfield or tube it over to Balham for an evening out.

I popped in here yesterday after reading a review about the place on Time Out. I didn't even realise the place was there, which is a shame, as it is a fantastic place, and feel a lot of people are missing out.

The decor of the building is fantastic, drinks are reasonably priced, music good and toilets clean. Could do with some food, but with every pub turning into some gastro venture, maybe not having food isn't a bad thing, fancy bar snacks instead would be a nice addition.

Will definitely be going back, Tooting needs more places like this!
theadz01 - 2 Jun 2008 16:06
Fabulous place! Well run - great, friendly staff. A MUCH needed bar for Tooting!
Sprue - 27 May 2008 16:39
Tooting's 'trendy' bar...

Good surroundings, always busy - how on earth was this ever the tramshed in its previous incarnation!?
randommalarky - 8 May 2008 16:03
"God crowd"? !!
bevtan - 23 Apr 2008 17:17
Love this place. Going to make it my regular i think. God crowd, lovely interior. Well done with the relaunch!:)
noggintnog - 20 Apr 2008 13:12
Cannot fault this big old bugger of a bar. Ace decor, toilets and music - ok drinks range and the food will probably be pretty darn good as well.
The only gripe I have is I wish they were not so near the pub I run. Ha Ha! Oh, well you can't win 'em all! Good luck to them, except they really don't need it. A class act. 10/10.
rjbradburnesq - 14 Jan 2008 18:03
Great place guys!
thelongroom - 3 Jan 2008 14:41
This is now a great place to go for the night. Well done on the new-look Tram!!
jcreedy - 29 Dec 2007 12:45
The Tooting Tram & Social is a now a fantastic bar, with a lovely relaxed atmosphere. The staff are friendly and I really hope this place takes off. I highly recommend it.
hannahsw17 - 10 Dec 2007 18:11
Went in Saturday after it opened. Really liked the place, perhaps not for everyone as at night reminded me of the horrors silent hill and th phot of the japanese chick on the wall which follows you round reminded me of the ring. Looks like they will ales on tap. Bar staff were friendly enough. The place was quite full music was good mix of ska/reggae and indie. Perhaps a bit loud for a quiet drink tho. I'll be back for a visit. I am a bit turned off by crebs antics below tho.
lance.uppercut - 28 Nov 2007 12:34
Antic - I realise that you want to promote your business and make a success of the pubs that you own but really couldn't you at least try to be more subtle.
If you are going to submit pretend independent reviews then maybe you should cover your tracks a bit more.
Here are the comments made by Noodle on all the other pubs owned by Antic so don't be surprised to see their review of the TTS in the near future.
All posted on the same day within a 15 min period and they must be pretty tired from all the running around London they do given they claim to have just moved to Crystal Palace but will be working on their laptop in Balham and socialising in Brixton, East Dulwich and Brockley.

The Blue Bottle, Crystal Palace

Had a great time watching the football, definitely the best place to drink in crystal Palace. didn't have a problem at the bar or with the bouncers, didn't really notice them much which must be a good thing! Am new to the area, plan to make it my local.

29 Aug 2006 17:36

Balham Bowls Club, Balham

Found this place which opened last week, its really novel and well worth a visit. Has wireless broadband + food so ideal for sitting and working if like me you need to! Has all the cool bowls stuff up very postmodern in a friendly sort of way

29 Aug 2006 17:24

The Dogstar, Brixton

Really cool venue- had an awesome night out and came back the next day for hair of the dog on a sofa. Will be back again.

29 Aug 2006 17:19

The East Dulwich Tavern (EDT), Dulwich

think some of the comments here are pretty harsh, there have been some changes but I think they are for the best- the atmosphere is really good now and the food is definately 'good pub food' if not haute cuisine. the place is more like a proper local pub now but without being scary- had a lovely evening there the other week.

29 Aug 2006 17:15

Jam Circus, Brockley

Found this pub by accident and was really charmed by the unusual set up- have been scared off in the past by some south London pubs so nice to find one which feels like something from the center of town. Thought the food was really nice so not sure about the guy below!

anonomo - 23 Nov 2007 13:20
Crebs - your review is too obvious - as is your review for the Balham Bowls Club. Don't do this - it's cringeable and just puts people off. Leave these webistes for genuine independent reviewers
anonomo - 23 Nov 2007 13:02
So far I've been impressed with the Tooting Tram & Social. Just the sort of pub Tooting needs. It will be interesting to see what happens in a few months.
rockd1509 - 21 Nov 2007 17:47
hhm .. sounds like another manager ( judging by where crebs has last posted and the fact that its owned by the same Co ) bigging up his work place..

yes its a nice bar, but it was far from busy when we popped in, on saturday . Slow down ! these things take time to build up. We will try again in a few months

anonymous - 20 Nov 2007 16:50
Well, the Tooting Tram & Social opened on 7th November, what a difference!! Totally fantastic! It was packed on the first night, revisited Saturday and it was the same story! Restaurant is not open yet, but it is meant to be up and running within a couple of weeks. Very welcoming and no sign of the old (or should I say very YOUNG) crowd that frequented it previously. Friendly staff, funky atmosphere, fab decor and at last NICE loos!
crebs - 16 Nov 2007 17:15
Tramshed has closed down, but I hear is going to re open in a couple of months under new private ownership! Fingers crossed, Tooting seems to be moving in the right direction, so hopefully someone with that vision has bought it!
crebs - 31 Aug 2007 11:47
Great place only if you are desperate for a late drink at the weekends, as they don't charge entry. Can't remember when they close (3?) due to mucho cerveza. Mostly Polish / wannabe gangster clientele. Couldn't get in on several occasions due to police presence - rough as fcuk! Oh - and the loos are so rank that you're better off going in the alleyway.
adam74 - 6 Jan 2007 19:41
this pub has a karaoke on a thursday night with me as the host. come on down, drink the cheap drink and sing from 9pm-1am
JulesMay - 2 Jan 2007 17:12
Came in regularly with friends for 3 months.
Drink prices are cheap.
Bar staff are ok, not the greatest when attending a customer.
Toilets are a disgrace, they are totally run down.
Decent amount of space upstairs and downstairs.
On fridays and Saturdays, mostly full people who look 16 years old. The odd little boy wanna be gangsta lurking around.
Ok if you want to drink yourself stupid.

anonymous - 4 May 2006 14:01
A pretty good place, great for the football (one MASSIVE screen and many smaller screens). The staff sometimes seem more interested in talking to their mates instead of serving people, which is a tad annoying.

The place has recently changed it's floor plan, this has resulted in quite a large non smoking area, raised slightly from the ground level.

A younger crowd in general, but Im expecting to be a fun venue for the world cup.

herbaltea - 15 Mar 2006 13:53
Massive pub with huge
Jenga and huge Connect Four.
You feel like a dwarf.
Haiku_Dave - 18 Aug 2005 15:01
This place is architecturally cool; rare fire-glazed brick-clad walls and fat, funky air-con within a sky-lit atrium. Staff are always friendly and they now serve Cobra, Grolsh and San Miguel on tap. Game On.
garthmcw - 18 Mar 2005 11:46
Lovely interior even if the toilets are manky. I can think of worse places to drink in Tooting.
James Creedy - 18 Oct 2004 23:22
I was in there last thursday night and nearly had my bag knicked! I just wanted to say thanks to all the bouncers who helped me out. It didn't spoil my evening too much and I had a really nice time - especially chatting to different kinds of people. Will definetly go back again!
Vicki - [email protected] - 15 Jul 2004 17:15
When I used to go here it was always filled with pissed up Uni students who couldn't hold their lager.
Aaron - 14 May 2004 03:47
On a thursday night Tramshed is fantastic. The music isnt too great but if you go along with friends you can get cheap drinks and dance till quite late. Lota fun if you've only got a fiver but you want to get drunk
Chantelle - 10 May 2004 17:59
Basically Tramshed is a good place to go to if you live near & you want to go out for some cheap drinks with your friends. Only bother going on a thursday though because thats the student night when its cheap. & if your under eighteen, don't bother becasue they just got strict with I.D
Jenny - 29 Mar 2004 14:20
YOUR ALL MAD!!!!!!, The pub is terrible!, I was tortured by friends to go in there for a birthday drink, I almost died of boredom, not to mention the state of the place, the toilets looked as though they'd never seen any sort of cleaning done to them, at one point there were 3 staff in the place and only us 6 and there was 12 pint glasses on the table, we had to wait....30 minutes to get them cleared and even them we asked them to come over. DONT GO THERE YOU ONLY LIVE ONCE DONT WASTE PRECIOUS TIME!!!!!
THE STONED ONE - 20 Feb 2004 13:42
Has picked up a lot within last year. the bar staff is extremely honest and friendly. U just cant resist drinkin in there. Sat night is amazing-good runaway from POP and COMMON world. Great atmosphere, loads of young people and not only. Tolerant environment. Reaal a place to be. Worth going no matter if you are a student or not.
driver - 15 Feb 2004 10:23
Had a good night mid-week. Not the best around but a nice place to have as a local if you're so lucky. I've heard their band nights really pack em in!
revs - 4 Nov 2003 20:22
they put on a couple live bands a month ago and the place was packed. hopefully they will carry on with idea cos i really enjoyed it that night.
marcus - 26 Sep 2003 13:39
Well I disagree, this place is clearly better run than it was this time last year. As for the atmosphere, Thursday nights absolutely rock!
Legohead - 12 Sep 2003 18:10
was a great pub 2 or 3 years ago, it used to have cheap beer and friendly staff and despite being a chain pub had a good regulars atmousphere. Now the beer offers are all but gone, yellow cards are demanded constantly and there is no effort by the staff to remember what you are drinking or if you have a 'yellow card'.These are constantly demanded to prevent being ripped off and it seems to me the place is just doing all it can to squeeze money out of us.1 a drink night is now only from 9pm and the applicable drinks are always changing, business has ruined what was once a cheap/cheerful and happening place. New manager or a less cynical system is in order.....sigh
Mr G - 6 Sep 2003 15:26
When it first opened around 5/6 years ago, it had a really good atmosphere and nice, these days since the new bar manager has arrived its devestatingly dull and dire, bring back the old crew!, anyway if you want a decent drink go to
anonymous - 29 Aug 2003 20:33
Open till 1:00am which is always a bonus, is is a fun place to go with plenty of smiley people around. It's a big place so you can usually find somewhere to sit and is reasonably priced.
However, the main clientelle is students so you can end up feeling a bit old and past it!!
Ben - 15 Aug 2003 12:39
This pub is really going places of late, and the new manager is absolutely gorgeous!
slassa - 21 Jul 2003 22:01
Been there a few times , usually downstairs as I like to shake my batty plus if I venture upstairs Im liable to stack down the stairs after a couple of lagers
Ginga Ian - 8 Jul 2003 14:12
be there every saturdays...I'll be djing down there running my own night called shockingbreaks presenting a night of RnB/HipHop...admission is free, drink promotions on the night and its were all the women will be at...see you there
