please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.

Last stop in Huddersfield before a football game in the town, was the Vulcan. Being fairly close to the stadium, it was heaving with a predominantly football crowd. It was difficult to judge the pub. But, one comment I had was that all of the ales were on the pale side - Elland White Prussian & Marley's Ghost, Copper Dragon Golden Pippin & Westgate English Pale & Classic Blonde. We found a little room to stand near a pool table next to the entrance. But space was certainly at a premium. Would like to visit again when much quieter. But, seemed a pub that was only slightly above average in a town with many great pubs.

What has happened to this site. Accuracy crap! This pub is not 2/10th of a mile from the station, nor is the Head of Steam but for a very different reason!!!

last pub on our festive #beertrip to Huddersfield, while not to all of our groups taste; I enjoyed it. A locals pub, and on our visit a mans pub. Nice selection of beers, 2 from M'cr & 1 Thwaites. We managed play pool before the pub filled to bursting at just after 5pm (Sun). Long thin pub meant a squeeze to the WC.

Friendly little pub, mercifully far enough away from Huddersfield railway Station to be off the dreaded 'ale trail' and all those undesirables trying to get drunk. Good range of low priced beers and the food looks superb.

Recently revisited this excellent pub as part of a Huddy crawl. For me this is a must visit establishment whenever I'm in town.

Surprised that the overall rating is not higher - we found a good range of mainly local beers in good condition at very fair prices and a friendly welcome. A locals' pub maybe, but we were made to feel at home. Another good Huddersfield experience, one of several on the day.

Busy after the match on Saturday but still got served a cracking pint in double quick time. Good stuff.

Cracking backstreet locals pub. Excellent steak & onion sandwich and a fine pint of Mallinsons. Value for money.

Cant believe the negative comments about this pub.
I have always found the vulcan to be one of the friendliest ive ever known. The beer is cheaper than anywhere else the food is amazing and the people are very welcoming and friendly. The smoking area is out the back under cover and it is probably the only pub left that has all the sport channels and is able to show every football and rugby game, the races tennis golf and anything else you can think off. It is very customer focused and is really the best kept secret in Huddersfield. Not many people know about it and are always surprised at what a great place it is. It does have a name as an old mns pub but trut me it is nothing of the kind. If you want to find salt of the earth true yorkshire people young and old the Vulcan is the place for you. Friday night is Karaoke, Saturday night is disco and every other sunday there is a turn on. Get yourself down there or miss out. The only reason you wouldn't like this place is if you yourself are a boring miserable old fart!!!

Went in there a few days ago only to find the most unwelcoming bunch of people (talk about miserable and cold shouldered). To make matters worse a group of young punks came in and decided to act like animals and hog the pool table, continuously going in and out of the pub obviously having a puff of the old jamaican woodbine.I agree with the previous comment not a place to bring families or to comr if you want a nice tranquil drink.

6 months ago I would have given this pub 9 out of 10 but now the only thing going for it is the good food. The beer is as expensive as everywhere else in town and more than 10% of your pint is froth. To make matters worse hooligans are encouraged to drink so definitely not a place for families or couples.

Theakstons and Bass have been replaced by 2 changing guests - Davenports and Nellie Dene on Sunday. The no smoking section has disappeared. Has a pool table and Sky sports.

Went in with 4 friends on a Saturday afternoon. Not very impressed as the only bitter on was a rather watery Worthingtons.

3 real ales on, Worthington, Theakstons Best and Bass and is cheaper than most around. Wouldn't disagree with the previous comment, but is very smoky.

If you ever visit Huddersfield you must experience the delights of the Vulcan. A documentary should be made about this place, the clientele is a muddle of old men, postmen, weirdoes, alcoholics and students. The beer is good, the cheapest doubles bar I have seen, happy hour all night on a wednesday, the roast dinners at weekends are brilliant, staff friendly enough especially Pam who will always give you a warm welcome. A good proper pub full of real people and you should look out for the drunken air guitar antics by the regular drunks when the seventies themed disco starts, many a fun time had. I live down south now but always pass through the vulcans doors when i'm back in town.
