user reviews of the Crown and Anchor, Winchester

please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.

Visited this pub a few years ago when last in Winchester when it was clearly a tired but solid locals corner pub.
Back in Winchester again and decided to pop in when seeing the chalk boards outside.
Not sure this place knows what it wants to be now. It seems to have Gastro restaurant intentions but want's to be a traditional pub at the same time, and is in danger of doing neither particularly well.
To be fair we didn't try the food as we were just visiting for a pint.
And word to davegooner, who I assume is the same davec507, Manager at The Crown and Anchor on Trip Advisor who tries to defend all the one post wonders that are bigging up this pub on Trip Advisor, if you are going to shout about having three well kept beers
A) Make sure they are all on, only IPA and Olde Trip were on for my visit.
B)Try and make sure you have something better than the insipid brews from Bury St Edmunds.
And a word to the wise, bigging up your own place on any social media site is not big and not clever.

Visited the Crown and Anchor for lunch today. Really nice Sunday Roast - well cooked lamb, fresh veg and tasty roast potatoes - only slight criticism was the ready-made yorkshire puddings!

Would definately go back again. Staff were friendly, and the pub had a really great atmosphere.

Also had a well kept pint of IPA.

Nice pint of GK IPA with Abbot also being available. Friendly Bar Staff and Locals. What I would call a pub at the more Basic end of Decor but never the less acceptable with a nice view of Winchester Cathedral. Would I go back (probably not).

I went today to the Crown and Anchor after hearing great things about the pub. We were blown away by the fantasic fish menu. As I adore fish, I was in my element! I asked for a special fish starter that wasn't on the menu, and the chef personally visited me. He then produced the most outstanding fish soup I have ever tried! To follow, I had the Gilt head bream and my partner had a rump of lamb steak. Wow, it was all cooked to perfection! as were the veg (not at all run of the mill!), and the potatoes. Just great!
The service was amazing, and the landlady was so welcoming, efficient and helpful. I enjoted a pint of one of THREE well kept real beers. I was spoiled for choice. Next time I visit, I wont be driving!
Can't recomend the pub enough, the change in ownership is a great thing here and we shall be back again aand again!!

Was quite surprised by this place - expected to find a place for the tourists given its location, but this seems a real locals place. Also a Greene King pub with more than 2 beers on offer! Food seemed pretty good value too.

Very pleased with this pub, beer was superb, the barman very polite and friendly (as were the regulars) and the pub was very clean and tidy.

We were disappointed to find this pub has lost its charm: the dcor has changed from traditional pub to modern wine-barish. Gone are the carpet and comfy chairs.
davel_cats - 24 Feb 2011 12:41
Disgrace - is the only word I can use to sum this place up. The interior is basic, to say the least. The presentation of the back bar is non-existant. The place needs some attention to its decor.....DESPERATELY!!!!! But the Abbott was spot on. 3/10

I went to this pub over the weekend as I used to go there many years ago and was very disappointed. The service was terrible, the staff looked miserable and there is no atmosphere or music, even the locals looked depressed. It feels like the life has been sucked out of this place. We couldn't get out of there fast enough.

Pity, as it's a beautiful central pub with a nice range of beers.

Very poor inter-personal skills - failed to produce meals on time despite promising that they would do so - then when they failed to produce, stating that they made no such pledge. I would NOT recommend it to anyone.

I actually really liked this one! Tried a nice pint of the Belhaven Best. Really good prices (2.60 for that one) and the army verteran who helped me with directions and the chap behind the bar were really friendly! Top marks!

well, this public house is hideous, both male managers have no people skills in anyway, why a brewery would employ such people is beyond me,staff were very nice but could see they were not happy working for 2 managers who have no clue how to run a pub, having been in the trade for many years myself i find that this pub deserves no more than a closure or at least get new management, asst manager who i believe his name is gavin was a breath of fresh air and is wasted in such a horriffic pub,0/10 for me.

A great pub in Winchester , good selection of beers and a nice beer garden which is clean. Really nice staff with a warm welcome.

The high rating for this pub mystifies me. I popped in on a saturday afternoon and there were two ales on - Greene King IPA and Greene King Fireside Ale. I popped for a mediocre pint of the latter and supped it in the background of a half-empty pub with christmas music that was far too loud. How this pub gets an average rating above 4/10 is totally bewildering to me. It is adequate, nothing more.

been back for food this weekend was good pub grub, portions are generous to say the least. the pub isnt the best for atmosphere but is good food and a pint
not cheapest but you do get what you pay for so worth trying the place....
churchtqy - 14 Jul 2008 16:25
Yeah nice pub now, had really nice steak here today washed down with good pint or Ruddles best, shame it still has to sell greedy king beers even tho not a tenancy anymore. got nice homely feel to it.
would say its defo on the up

Visited for a recent Friday night drinking session. The staff were friendly and there were plenty of them, meaning that bar service was pretty quick, despite the pub being fairly busy.

Decent selection of real ales, but largely the same as every other Greene King pub in Winchester.

Music was "interesting" and wouldn't suit all tastes (mixture of cheesey '80s stuff and a dance selection).

Locals were very friendly toward us tourists. Ruddles Orchard was nice. Beautiful little place!
urf - 8 Jul 2007 14:45
Very friendly, helpful staff who went along with all our strange requests on a recent crawl. If you want to drink your pint out of a dogbowl whilst eating a Pot Noodle, this is the place to come!

i went to the crown and anchor last night as i had heard about the change in tenancy and i was interested to see if anything had changed.
i was glad to see the same staff members but it was also nice to meet the new tenants who introduced themselves to me.
although i hadnt intended on having a late night i ended up staying the whole night as from 8 o clock all the staff INCLUDING THE NEW TENANTS dressed up in eurovision themed costumes and the place was full with punters watching the eurovison joining in with the sweepstakes and just having a great time.
and it was nice that the pub finally took advantage of their late night licence.

GREAT PUB, GREAT ATMOSPHERE, GREAT NIGHT..!!!!

Nipped down to Winchester on Easter sunday, what a great roast. Superb. We'll be driving down again soon just to have the grub.

Come to winchester often and always end up coming back here to finish the day off .A well chilled atmosphere and a good mix of punters
TOP DARTS!!

I pop into this pub when I am in town - it is always superb. I'm very sad to hear that the tenants are retiring - I hope the standards are maintained.

I visit Winchester often. Having tried most of the pubs on the High Street for refreshment whilst on business in the City.
I can now honestly say, that out of all the High Street pubs in Winchester, and there are a few! This pub is by far the most inviting and clean, no dirty ashtrays or glasses!. The staff are hard working and friendly. And the Open fire place is exceptionally inviting. The food is good old fashioned tradtional and hearty. I know where I shall visit when on business.

Great pub: great food, great ale, friendly staff. A must on a cold winter's day.
davel_cats - 25 Nov 2006 15:11
Terrific pub. Fact. The staff are amazingly friendly, the food is traditional and exactly what you want when going to a pub. I'm not a local but if I were to return to Winchester this would certainly be my first port of call.
mootoni - 3 Mar 2006 15:07
This place has a chilled atmosphere to it, as many have said here, a pretty decent pub. Not much choice on tap, but what is there is poured properly (guinness)and tastes right. The daytime experience is very pleasant, and one particular mate of mine loves the burger and chips- bloody great portion for the money you spend. A good place to go for a chilled morning/afternoon pint.
ginmarinthedon - 7 Oct 2005 20:25
Great pub to spend a sunny weekend afternoon in. I went with a bunch of friends last saturday and spent several happy hours enjoying the sun and food and relaxing in the courtyard part. Thoroughly recommended.

Good hearty food and a nice selection of drinks. Really friendly staff who make you feel very welcome and can pour a proper pint. Would recommend to anyone who wanted a relaxing drink and some comfort food!

We went to Winchester for the day and popped into the Crown and Anchor for lunch as it looked really nice - good hanging baskets.
Inside the pub's incredibly clean and cosy. Friendly staff and a really pleasant patio garden make this an ideal pub for a spot of lunch. The menu's quite traditional but no complaints on the food front and good value for money. Good choiced of wines too.

There's something of the night about The Crown and Anchor. Used to be the town centre pub that nobody went to. Think it still is. Creepy and threatening but above average for the town centre. Not much of a recommendation innit!
anonymous - 5 Aug 2005 11:44
A fairly average pub but like all Winchester pubs it can get incredibly busy in the evening and at the weekend. Fairly pleasant but not distinctive.
