user reviews of the Six Bells, Bishops Castle

please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.

The Six Bells Brewery closed in 2018 so the beers on sale last Friday evening were two from Ludlow Brewing Co. (Blonde and Gold), Three Tuns Best and Marston's/Ringwood Wainwright. I thought the Best was the pick of the town's offerings. Very busy in the public bar but we sat at the last of the tables in the quieter dining room/lounge where you can also just drink without having to buy a meal.

Good as ever, if not better. New landlady is such great fun - was always smiling or laughing when I was there at the weekend. Pub is such a friendly place - real gem. The Spikey Blonde ale was in very good condition too.

Nev's beers are always on top form. Have been in here quite a few times over the years and I have never been disappointed. Nev himself is a great host and landlord. We couldn't get in the main bar this time round and so went and sat in the other bar which is a bit lacking in character in comparison. Still, if that's the only complaint, then he must be doing everything else right.

Had heard a lot about this place but, although there was nothing wrong with it, we found it a little short on atmosphere. We were the only ones in apart from a cluster of locals around the bar so maybe we chose the wrong night. Pint of Cloud Nine was ok.

An all-too-rare example of what a decent boozer should be. Conversation is the main entertainment here followed by old-fashioned board games. Lovely attitude to kids and the beer is, well, heavenly. Top spot.

Still a great pub - it is the brewery tap house for the Six Bells brewery, which is located just behind.

Possibly the best beer in Bishops Castle called in on Good Friday tea time for a couple of pints of Cloud Nine.

The most intimate of the town's pubs so were were soon talking to the locals in front of the woodburner. The Ow Do! was possibly the best pint in town (although the competition is fierce) and also on offer were Big Nev's, Cloud Nine and the seasonal Pisces.

Sell cider in winter and you'd get an 8.

Nice wellcome by the landlord, landlady and pub dog! Some lovely ales and a nice cosy woodburner was very appreciated on such a cold day. Well worth visiting.

I encountered the surliest and downright rude barmaid I have ever had the unfortunate experience to be served by in this pub. I'd heard a lot about Bishops Castle and their two brewery pubs so when I was camping nearby with my family at the start of this month I was eager to try them out. I took with me a two-pint and four-pint container to enable me to bring some away with me to enjoy over the next couple of days. Having tried some halves of the available beers in both pubs I actually slightly favoured the Six Bells so returned there armed with the containers. I'd noticed that it shut at 2.30pm but as it was only just gone 20 past and it was only going to be a fleeting visit I thought that would be fine. I walked in to discover the towels already on the pumps. To be fair the lady in question did agree to serve me but that's when the problems started. The four-pint container is brown and not see-through so you never quite know whether you're going to get a full measure. But in my experience, it certainly needs to froth over the top to get somewhere near the four pints. But the two-pint container is actually clear with a line showing the two pint mark, so you can see exactly what you're getting. Therefore when she presented it to me with at least half a pint of froth at the top, I asked in a perfectly pleasant and polite manner whether she would be able to top it up. The venomous response I got back was unbelievable. She claimed it was a measured serving and if I wanted any more then she'd charge me for it! She did eventually bedrudgingly top it up slightly but still not to the two-pint mark and slammed it back on the bar. When I explained that I was purely trying to get the amount of beer that I was paying for, she complained that I'd come in 'after hours', which I didn't, and even then it's not an excuse to serve a member of the public in such a rude and discourteous manner. I could understand it a bit more if it was a backstreet boozer that wasn't used to such requests, but this is actually a pub with an on-site brewery! I was very shaken up by the whole incident and my disbelief was raised further when I logged on to their websit on my return from holiday to discover that it was actually the landlady of the pub that served me. It beggars belief that someone would run their business in such a way, no wonder there were only four people in there on a sunny summer's afternoon.

Not sure what we made of this. The food was lovely. The owner was great. But there's only one choice of white wine, and only one choice of red, they don't take credit or debit cards, and hubby rated the condition of the male loos as 'I haven't had an experience like that in 30 years'.

Forth visit to this pub and each has been a very enjoyable experience. The first time was during one of the towns beer festivals a few years ago when this place was really manic, obviously won over by the charms of the town and this pub in particular.

This visit was to enjoy a pint of Ow Do and Cockschaffer both of which were excellent. No sign of Big Nev on this occasion but Sue was jocular and the atmosphere was very friendly and chatty. I do recall someone asking for a pint of Veg Bins before pointing out it was an anagram of Big Nevs, they still got served despite the cheek.

A well known and highly regarded pub amongst real ale fans. The beer is excellent, although with a strong bias to the lighter golden hues.I would like to see a few more dark or ruby coloured ales but I am being slightly fussy. The welcome from behind the bar and from the locals is second to none. The food is also scores well with home made bread ,good veggie options and lovely Gloucester Old Spot sausages and mash.Nev also makes a mean curry, watch out for the Goat curry.Quite simply the best all round pub in town .

Had Sunday lunch here - good value at 6.95 and a good meal too.

Four of their ales on when I was there. Obviously served to a good standard.

Very enthusiastic landlord ("Big Nev") and friendly all-round.

The ale at this pub is stunning, brewed by the friendly landlord in the brewery at the rear of the pub.
The food though, is frankly shocking! Just have a pint!
Outside seating is very limited.

Have (yet again!) visited Bishops Castle for their annual beer festival, and this pub continues to maintain its very high standard of beers brewed and served. Highly recommended.

A pint of Big Nev, served by the big man himself, is a fine way to start a pub crawl in Bishops Castle. A classic and cracking pub.

Good pub with great beers. Good local atmosphere with a welcoming fire on a cold winter's night.

Large Neville was on good form on Saturday, and the Big Nev was fine too. Fine beer and conversation with the brewer - a lovely way to spend a lunchtime. Ask about the pork scratchings. If you are nearby, you must take time to pop in.

This is a fine pub which serves beer from the attached micro-brewery (4 on my visit, 3 lighter hoppy beers and one dark substantial winter beer). One room is a real drinkers' bar with a fire (and chestnuts really were roasting on my visit), motley collection of tables etc, camra guides and so forth. Another, again simply furnished, is set out for eating. Sadly I did not get chance to sample anything other than the free roast potato on the bar.
