Well, that's it then...thanks for the memories - good, bad and those I can't remember. Although we left for Oz in early 2006, as landlords for a good couple of years, Nicci and I have fond memories of the old girl. We were blessed with some great locals - some of whom were with us from Day 1 and some who came along, liked what we were doing and stayed. Yes, sometimes the music was too loud and sometimes we drank too much, but it kinda worked. I only hope everyone now realises why Zel never bothered with fixing the loo's. But don't get me started on that. We did the best we could with little to no help. Special thanks to all the staff - Suzy, Beth, Rosie, Ben - you know who you are - and in particular Paul. Thanks also to Scorch. The Digital Jukebox, Keith, was the final ingredient in our proper pub, along with Real Ale, ashtrays, lock ins and no daft food menu or coffee machine.
The Leicester folk that popped in to see us from around the world, the Aussie visitors, the fantastic Brighton fans who contributed so much, the muso's from The Damned, Dr Feelgood, Dexy's etc along with Brighton's finest who would mingle comfortably with all you locals is fine testament.
Yes there were some tvvats - but aren't there always? But the biggest ones are the people who engineered the destruction of this local coupled with the local 'businessmen' who were in bed with them all the way. The only word I can think of to describe them would no doubt be edited here.
To those on here who didn't like the place, I offer no apology. You just can't please all the people all the time. I hope you found somewhere you liked - although I suspect you're probably spoilt for choice these days.
To the rest - thank you again for your presence, spirit, friendship, pints and most of all, your patronage....some special times were had. The building has gone - the memories will live forever. Farewell The Cobblers Thumb.

Siituated on a busy road junction near some very old railway viaducts and a scrap yard and originally called The New England Inn (as can be seen if you look up). You can still make out the original layout of this pub which must have had at least three rooms; two bars and a lobby area with the gents out in the back yard(now the smoking area). It is a bit down at heel but they have tried to brighten (brighton??) it up a bit by painting graffitti everywhere - bar counter front and all around the yard area. It's not the usual crap nonsense but quite well done but it is "in your face". The barman and locals were very friendly and there were 4 real ales on when we went - all perfectly drinkable. No food - live music nights. We were told that there had been plans to flatten the entire area to make way for a new road but this was now on hold and probably not going to happen. However, pay a visit soon - just in case...

This a proper pub, free pool and friendly regulars of all ages. Grubby but I would rather put up with a bit of dirt than be in a souless pseudo wine(whine)bar or sports pub. Music a bit boring, mostly old rock and staff very slow but definately worth a visit. Good covered smoking area with heaters that work but not much seating inside. Definately a smokers pub.

Full of character. This is one of the only pubs in my local area where I enter as a stranger and genuinely feel I'm part of a family. The staff are welcoming and friendly, but not in a scary, desperate way. Regulars were inclusive without being lecherous. Ale selection was great and the garden was warm despite the rain and cold outside.
Last time I was in there was a brilliant bluegrass band on too - apparently live music is becoming a regular occurance on the weekends.

A bit rough around the edges. Sometimes has free pool though, which is a plus.

Despite living in Brighton for a few years I've never been in, until Friday.

It looks a bit ropey on the outside, but it's a lovely boozer inside. A proper pub.

The toilets leave something to be desired mind!

Good covered smoking area, tho heaters broke. Nice and dingy with a good set of regulars. Good Guinness.

Prior man was beaten at pool in this pub! Take Note!!

Pub was very quiet when we visited so we were able to chat with the landlord. Very friendly, and enjoyed the beers. Had to go into the garden to see the sign over the gents - used beer department...

Mediocre, alright but not brilliant, usual boring range of beers + gents is genuinelky falling apart, nice collection of Aussie tat decorating the place tho which is good. Bad seating - 5/10

I agreed with the previous review until it came under new management last month, and now it is a lot better, think the pipes have been cleaned in what must have been years, finally got rid of the horrible men that would sit around the bar so you were unable to get a drink, its much cleaner, they've finally got a patio heater and starting to give you reasons to go there like the new open mic night. Still not my favourite pub in brighton but a damn site better than it was a few months ago.

My God, I think most of the reviewers must have been tripping when they wrote about this pub! The place is a dirty, unkempt dive. The bar staff are surly at best and the beer is just about acceptable at best but often on its way out. I'm all for having an outside loo to add a bit of character, but not one where you need to put waders on and hold your breath to use! And the one man's cubicle was out of use with no sign of being repaired. Best not to eat! Oh and finally, don't come here to talk, because the music is deafening. Avoid unless you're too drunk or stoned to care.

Only visited once but I have to give it an excelent rating. Good atmosphere, outside loo, very friendly. Well worth a visit.

bloody excellent - the staff have a reliable but strange combination of being crusty, good looking and drunk - the place is a shambles but it feels like being at a mate's house.

Lived on Ditchling Rise for a year and was tragically late in discovering this rather excellent hostelry.

Easily the best pub within stumbling distance of Preston Circus.
captaincwjensen - 8 May 2006 15:27
I lived up the road from this pub for 2 great years. good selection of ciders, pool competition on a wednesday, and consistently friendly staff. highly recommended if you're in the Preston Circus area.

Had a great time here a few Saturday afternoon's back with a group of friends - likewise this has to be the best pub in Preston Circus
ed_hounsell - 6 Jan 2005 15:23
My other half loves the range of 'proper' beers and lagers in here. The atmosphere is relaxed but busy and the bar well-priced. Good for either a quiet chat for two or for a larger gathering. Subtly split into two sections.

Becoming an Aussie pub has definitely saved the Cobblers from its earlier decline. The beers are good and the management have made an effort to decorate the place effectively. Better than most of the other pubs around Preston Circus!

nicci - 11 Feb 2004 17:42
I love it! Brilliant little pub. Nice punters, good food, friendly staff.
jane - 27 Jan 2004 12:36
The most improved pub in the Brighton area over the last year or so, lots of different Aussie and English beer, proper wine list, shooters, happier pub-goers and more of them, pool table, food, Thursday DJ, footy on the big screen doesn't intrude, good music.. the beat goes on!
Keith - 4 Dec 2003 13:24
Surprisingly large, considering what it looks like from outside. Nice Aussie theme, but can't remember if the beer was any good as I got too hammered. So must have been good.
vulga - 2 Oct 2003 15:55
its pretty good, free pool till 7 pm we live up the road we like it and we like the engineer.
anonymous - 27 Jul 2003 22:47
Excellent little pub that's not as well known as it should be due to being out of the centre a little bit. I have particularly good memories of meeting here after Oxford beat Brighton 3-0 in 1991.
