Currently closed as it is being turned into a "boutique hotel and restaurant" apparently. According to one of the locals in the nearby Swan, it is even going to have a stainless steel bar (which will make it very different from the Swan).

Stayed here last Saturday, Had a very good meal, well cooked and presented. Nice place to spend an evening, but it was a shame it was so empty for a Saturday night.
Still, I guess we are in the run up to christmas and people are wary about spending their money.

Nice enough place, and the beer was good. Sadly, all of the atmoshere seems to have been "improved" out of it. Maybe I've been spoilt, but the beer also seemed to be pricey.

Decent beer but food nothing special for the price. Nice garden. Worth a visit.

Had a very convivial evening staying here. Did not sample much of the food but the beer was excellent, as was the drinking atmosphere. Whiskies also a speciality. There was a genuine welcome at the bar and the accomodation was adequate. You'll need a Tom Tom to find the place! RG17 9QR

The pub has done well to bolster its existence as such by running dining fcilities whilst still preserving enough of it for a proper old fashioned supping session. Popular with locals. How nice to find a pub these days where you can have a beer or two without feeling like a nuisance appendage to a restaurant/gastro pub!

Definitely one to be re/visited for the serious beer drinker. CAMRA recognised.

Very pretty little country pub. The food is excellent quality but pricey. The real ale is very well kept and there is a decent selection of wine too. The rooms are very comfortable and well appointed - much better than they look from the outside.

I've always enjoyed the food, but I agree that the restaurant is overpriced. And they don't warn you about the bread not being free -- it costs 5 or thereabouts!

The Crown and Garter has the potential to be one of the best pubs in West Berkshire. Its decor is simple and tasteful, it serves real ale from the West Berkshire Brewery and its garden is great in the summers.

The restaurant is what holds it back from fulfilling its potential as a great pub. You can be a pub, or you can be a restaurant -- it's very hard to be both.

Food was absolutely awful, and incredibly overpriced. My example is a chicken caeser salad (exactly as described on menu), which came out as a boned thigh of chicken on top of a small amount of lettuce, topped with a huge amount of overpowering anchovies (was not warned). Also, two bread baskets (one half empty) with three small dips to dip in of which one was butter. Grand total for these two items: 22 pounds. Will never bother again. Plus, the restaurant is too close to the bar.

Worth seeking out, good beer, good value food especially the special midweek menu; two courses for 5.95 - but you must book this in advance either by phone or email. Also has a few letting rooms in modernised annex.
