user reviews of the Square Pig, Holborn

please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.

Poor bar service, rude staff. Avoid this pub at all costs.

It was OK in here....stopped off for a pint of Trotter ale, which was pretty good. Also on were Adnams old and Twickenham winter cheer, the ubiquitous Heineken as well as at least another Lager (couldn't make out the name from where I was sat!!) Busy lunchtime serving food , but friendly and attentive staff.

Well what a chnage in this place... I love it, the staff are always happy and ready to help, this is not quite a wine bar but they have perfected the atmostphere of an upmarket bar with great service and food, along with it quirkyness (quotes throughout the bar!)Its always busy for the afterwork crowd but definately worth a visit. I would recommend The Square Pig to EVERYONE!

Adnams Bitter and Broadside were both available along with a premium lager selection and my Guinness was well served by the friendly barman. The lighting is a tad too dim for me and there were too many people being served food from the hatch which was lit up like a beacon in comparison to the rest of the pub. I spotted a couple of screens that Id imagine show the football, but as there was none being played these were off making way for some background music. The pub itself is of a good size with plenty of seating and there is also some covered seating outside along the side of the pub.

This place is ok for a pint or two after work, but I wouldnt want to stay all evening as I found it a little bland which was more to do with the clientele than the actual pub.

Stumbled upon this place on night out, Looks quite ugly from outside, but quite cool and hip inside.

Bitter good quality, could look at the pricing of its wine as quite pricey for what you get....

Missed out on food as kitchen was closed when we visited (4pm monday)....

Bit of a suits' place, hardly surprising as it is very near Holborn tube, Fullers London Pride on, nice barmaids, might be better when it is less busy though I'm not sure when that would be.

I was pleasantly surprised as the pub looks unpromising from the outside. However inside it is modern, clean and spacious. The barmaid was charming and brought our beer over to us as the barrel had just been changed. The manager was very pleasant and chatted about his beer selection. It was late afternoon though - I guess the atmos could change once the suits arrive.

I disliked this pub so much on a visit earlier this evening that I specially registered on this site so that I could make sure other people knew how horrible it was. It isn't the fact that it is located at the bottom of an office block and has as much soul and character as a KFC, nor the fact that even by London standards it is excruciatingly expensive. No, it was the smug way the bar maid said "we don't do small glasses" (when asked for a small glass of red wine) and then cheerily demanded 5.35 for my drink. Delightful. It has the air of a place that doesn't care if you never go back just so long as you stay long enough that they can rip you off at least once. In a word, vile.

Nice space to drink in and some good, if fairly zeitgeisty, ales. Nice grub too. Service is dilettanteish though, perhps I should have worn a tie and got my bum kissed, this seems to be the norm.

Lovely clientele, this place. I went there last night, and two city suits started arguing, picking up chairs and threatening each other. When the manager intervened, he got a punch in the face for his trouble!

I work just across the road from this pub and honestly don't think it's as bad as all these reviews make out. Yes the service leaves something to be desired and the clientele are mostly in suits (well you are in Holborn) but the food is great for lunch, particularly the burger.

We regularly have an after work pint in here and a good place to start before going on into the west end. I'm not saying it's the greatest pub in Holborn but there are far worse!

Agree with earlier comments: the quality of service leaves a lot to be desired, the beer is rank, and the clientele dreadful. Avoid if you have any sense.

dull. full of morons. expensive.

Used an after class haunt by soul destroyers doing law school at nearby BPP, therefore full of some of the worst people you are ever likely to meet.

A fairly miserable All Bar One type of place, hence its popularity with the aforementioned.

I know it was a friday when I visited this pub, but I must say in 16 years of drinking in pubs worldwide (not constantly..lol) this pub has the worst bar service I have ever encountered.

My local after work pub and i haven't found better in Holborn. Good atmosphere, good food and you can stand outside in sun.
extraordinary - 4 Aug 2005 16:51
The clientele will always be office workers and therefore the atmosphere will always be lame. However, they can change the quality of the beer. 3 quid for a selection of vinegars would be more accurate.

Generally very busy with after-work office types. A very average pub - perfectly adequate.
rah - 2 Jun 2005 13:20
Lovely atmosphere and simple, scrummy dishes delivered remarkably fast!
Kitty - 30 Sep 2004 13:29
Could be a great pub, ruined by poorly kept beer (tastes like fairy liquid) and disorganised bar (notoriously appaling service on a friday night).

square pig,one of the best pubs in town, nice food, excellent service, atmosphere, gorgeus staff, what else.....
niki - 6 May 2004 14:19
Much improved, refit, new menu and better staff management. Watch your bags and wallets though as they often go here.

As per previous comments this can be a busy pub. Obviously the students have got their grant cheques, or their parents have coughed up some more spending money for timothy and gemima. Friday was pretty busy, but the pub looked like a shit hole. Covered in empty glasses and overflowing ashtrays and the bar was sopping wet. not a good feature. As for the specials on the board outside: beef kebabs with guinness sauce????? mmm like whatever. which also weren't available coz there's no food on friday night. So why advertise it? It's all about attention to detail.
tim - 5 Mar 2004 21:10
Visited on the 20th feb Service was appalling. Four chefs on a friday lunch, only serving sandwiches and stopped serving food at 1pm. no obvious manager aroundand loads of staff barely grasping the English Language. Also cold too.
Tim - 26 Feb 2004 14:37
The service was appalling. We were 'drip-fed' our food, one dish arrived 10mins before the others and two orders were forgotten about. If you want everyone to be served at the same time and the food to be warm don't eat here.
Laura - 10 Dec 2003 11:36
I actually really like this pub. It's one of only two good pubs in Holborn, the other is the Ivy House. All I can say is if you don't like a pub, don't go to it, and stop moaning.
David - 12 Aug 2003 22:41
This is a great bar with friendly staff. Very relaxed atmosphere, it can be a bit much when full of suits, but it's great when there's more of a mix. Very female friendly. Can be packed on fridays so it must be good
Karen - 30 Jul 2003 21:54
This is a YUPPIE joint unpretentious...? you what?! i have been to this vile establioshment and can list the typical punters
1 loud lawyers
2 tart secretaries
3 loud office staff
4 east end people cockneys mingling with the better off...so they think..
5 a crap 2 hours..sobibor would be more fun...this place is hell avoid avoid avoid!
belgrave square boy - 11 Jul 2003 18:46
Last year I think you had to be blonde and female to work at the square pig. Now there seem to be more good looking guys to appeal to us girls. The ubiquitous blonde bar totty is still there though so don't worry fellas!
Jenny - 10 Jun 2003 21:40
This is a great unpretentious bar/pub. Something for everyone with a big selection of bottled and draught beer, four real ales, a comprehensive wine list and even cocktail and shooter menus. Despite this big mix the formula still works.
James - 10 Jun 2003 21:37
A lively pub, with music and sports on the telly. Beers are pretty good and you can sit outside in the summer. Food's great too (OK, I know, this isn't a Good Food guide, but try some anyway !!)
