A good solid start to our pub crawl around Penzance.

The pub was quiet at noon on a Saturday but still quite liked the place all the same.

7/10 Worth a visit

Free house.

A one bar pub with two seating areas with another larger room leading off the bar which caters for diners.

3 beers on tap at time of visit, Doom Bar, Blue Anchor Spingo 'middle' and Potion No9 from the Penzance Brewing Company , (Star inn at Crowlas brewpub). All in excellent condition and priced at a very competitive rate. Warm welcome from new'ish managers.
Well worth a visit, even if only to try some different local beers.

Not bad little pub but a bit sparse and wooden.

Decent pint of Spingo and the only other offering was Doombar.

Not bad.

Called in on holiday this year: really nice place with friendly service. Good beer, good food (but I hope the chef's granny is OK now).

Popped in after the Pirates/Plymouth game on Christmas Eve - very good pint of Doombar (2:80) followed by a Spingo. Pleasant surroundings and good service.

A young lady has now got the lease of this hostelry and she's very good. At least they've got rid of that annoying Brummie twat who was the manager there during the last couple of years of Les's tenure. Great atmosphere and the beer's good too

Place was dead when I visited last week. An indifferent pint of Betty Stoggs at 3.10 was consumed.

This place isn't half the pub it used to be - great shame!

Visited on a couple of afternoons last week. The only place outside Helston I've come across Spingo. Pub also has Betty Stoggs and Doom Bar. All beers are well kept and the price is on a par with the surrounding pubs.

Pub has been refurbished since my last visit - not sure if it is still in the same hands but I suspect not. The outside toilets have closed and new posh ones built upstairs. The pool room is now a restaurant.

Beers on offer still the same - Spingo, Betty Stoggs and Doombar - and the 2 I tried were in fine condition.

It is hard to beat this traditional pub for atmosphere and quality of beer, not forgetting the excellent food at reasonable prices.

Visited the Dock with a group of friends following a recommendation.
They had a choice of 3 Cornish real ales : my favourite Spingo, brewed in Helston, Sharp's Doom Bar & Skinner's Betty Stoggs.

For once the females in our party were happy - the pub has an excellent choice of wines, the place was spotlessly clean and the toilets have got to be the best in the area !

We had planned to eat at the nearby Chinese, but when we looked at the menu we changed our minds & stayed at The Dock. The food is the same high standard as the beer, and the staff were friendly, efficient & knowledgable.

Glad to have discovered this place - Penzance is now worth viisiting.

I must have picked a bad night to visit The Dock. I can't say I find the attitude of the barmaid very friendly. The Spingo was decidedly off and the mumbling, fat oaf propped up against the bar seemed to take exception to me and my half pint of Spingo! Icertainly did not enjoy my visit and wonder if it's under new management in view of this pubs high rating.

Excellent pub. Is currently in the process of being renovated but the pub still had an excellent feeling. The locals, the barman and the land lord made myself and my brother feel very, very welcome. We nipped in for a quick pint and ended up staying in there until closing due to its welcoming feel and the excellent Spingo beer.

Unspoilt drinkers pub which I would love to be my local.

Popped in purely on the strength of the availability of the Spingo Ale (sourced from the Blue Anchor in Helston).

Inside we were met by a heavy nautical theme (check out the old nicotine-stained maritime maps plastered across the wall in the back bar) a bearded barman who could well have been Jethro's brother and a raucous game of poker. I did worry briefly that we'd stepped into proper locals territory.

Fortunately the Spingo was in decent nick and we got some good banter from the poker players when we started playing Pass the Pigs. Although it was a relatively quiet midweek night out of season, I could imagine this place would pack in some real atmosphere at the weekend.

2 ales available (I forget the second, dare say it was Doombar), competitively priced.

If you're looking for an unusual beer and a bit of banter just outside the immediate town 'strip' of pubs, you could do a lot worse than pop in here for a couple of Spingos.

As the name suggest, youll find this pub just off the working harbour and plays strongly on its maritime location. The interior is awash with nautical clutter in honour of all things that sail or sink; ensigns, figureheads, shipwreck charts, model ships, maps, numerous boat photos etc. Note the photo of 4 lads to the right of the bar the one on the right is a very young Jethro and to his left, his brother who apparently owns the pub.

The main bar is small, cosy and like much of the pub throughout, is basically furnished. There is a central area with a couple of sofas in front of an open fire and small TV for those who prefer a bit more comfort. The large rear section contains a pool table, further seating, widescreen TV, cash machine, upright piano and a tsunami settle (dont ask). The walls are plastered with old maps and charts. A patio to the side has some outside seating and a couple of portaloos.

Service was friendly albeit a bit sluggish on my first visit (staff promptly apologised). 3 hand pumps but only 2 ales available, Doom Bar (2.70) and the excellent Spingo (2.90) making a rare awayday appearance from its Helston source. The banned list of 20 or so names (including 2 lifers) show that they have made efforts to keep the unruly element away (and it is a large element if you go into town on a Saturday night) and on both my visits during the week I was here, the atmosphere was relaxed and civilized with unobtrusive music and everything centred on conversation. They dont do food but you are welcome to bring your own.

Overall, this was one of my favourite pubs in Penzance and it is worth notoing that it stays open long after its Dolphin neighbour shuts.

Friendly customers and bar staff plus the only place in Penzance where you can get Spingo on tap. Recommended.

One of the best pubs in Cornwall, with a good selection of locals. Attracts middle class intellectuals, fishermen and dock yard workers, all of whom are welcomed by the Landlord and his friendly staff.

A great pub close to the swimming pool and quayside. Quite intimidating at first but it is a friendly pub and you soon feel at home. They sell Spingo Middle here too all the time!!! Saves a trip to Helston to get some! Overall a great pub with a good feel to it.
