Absolute gem of a pub in a gem of a Cornish town.

Was totally rammed in here early on a Friday evening mainly with what must have been locals.

It's a fine old place in a good location and would certainly visit again.

8/10

Last pub of the night for us in Cornwall was the Cobweb, which is an imposing building at the bottom of the town, opposite the public car park. It has two bars with flagstone floors. One has a pool table. Ales were Tintagel Cornwall's Pride, Harbour Special & Merlin's Muddle & St Austell Tribute. Ciders are Healeys Cornish Rattler & Addlestones.

This is the nearest pub to the car park. It's a converted warehouse which used to store (and unofficially sell) alcohol - getting its "Cobweb" name from the state it was in when it was officially converted into a bar in 1947. It's an OK place. Fairly practical and laid back, with a reasonable and mostly successful attempt at creating an atmosphere. There is a useful outdoor space, and three indoor areas - the first being fairly plain and canteen like, the middle room being sparse, but fairly pub like, and the third being fairly cellar like, and the one that perhaps has the most atmosphere.

Local beers sold, and meals offered at restricted times (check first). It is the better of the two pubs in lower Boscastle, though the beers we had (from the Tintagel brewery) were not in top condition.

This is one of my favourite pubs in the entire UK. It's a proper community pub and a real ale drinkers heaven. But above all it has character in abundance. 10/10.

Couldn't agree at all with the previous comment 9 of us turned up out of the blue, and nothing was too much trouble, we even had two dogs with us, beer, wine and cider enjoyed by all, food by far the best in Boscastle, staff friendly and professional would recommend this pub to anyone visiting Boscastle or surrounding area well worth the visit and cant wait to pop in again

I am in a quandary over this place. On one hand the pub itself is quirky, dark and full of bric-a-brac and has a reasonable atmosphere. The beers are well kept and not ridiculously priced. I had Tintagel brewery's Harbour Special and very nice it was too. On the other hand my family decided to eat and the presentation and quality of the grub was awful, particularly as it cost us over fifty pounds. On the whole I'd say if its food your after make the trek up the hill to the Napoleon Inn but if you just want a snifter this place is okay.

Yes this is very much a locals pub, but the service was friendly enough and the scampi was good, as was the Rattler. Check out the price list from 1971 framed on the wall and marvel at beer being 10p a pint!

This is a pub you'll either love or hate right from the start. It is indeed dark inside and filled to bursting with artefacts and oddities. However it appears to be well kept, toilets were a little old but clean, and the roaring log fires in both bars when we visited in late November were most welcome. Several ales are available including St Austell Tribute and Sharp's Doom Bar, as well as some from local craft breweries. All appeared to be well kept, the Doom Bar in particular going down a treat. The Cobweb seems to be the 'local's pub' in Boscastle, and some of said characters are could indeed be percieved as being a little inhospitable - just ignore them and they shut up, I've found. We didn't try the food so can't really comment on that, except to say it certainly looked and smelt nice.

Only had time for a swift pint in The Cobweb, so just a quick impression of the place. Walked in the door, couldn't get to the bar as the locals had occupied all the bar stools and made it quite clear that they weren't going to shift out of the way for a grockle. Luckily they had another bar which was accessible. The Rattler cider was superb, but tables and chairs a bit old and wobbly and overall the impression was very dark, unwelcoming and gloomy.

Pubs in tourist spots should always be approached with caution but this one is pretty good. We had lunch in the bar but there is also a carvery and a family room. Couldn't fault the beer and the food and service were pretty good too. The local drunk and the grumpy git referred to below were nowhere to be seen.

Last visited this pub for lunch in mid April. (We have been there a number of times over the past few years during our frequent visits to Cornwall).
Regret to say that, in our opinion, the standard has declined over the past few months. I used to enjoy their first-class "Cobweb pizza", now sadly discontinued, and my wife always appreciated their freshly grilled fish.
On our last visit I ordered ham, egg & chips and my wife a half-chicken salad (no suitable fish available). Mine was cold (not just the ham) primarily due to being served on a very cold plate, and my wife's chicked had been so overcooked it was dried out and stringy - good only for my wife's diet and the dog!!!
Re. tracynoe's comment - the "grumpy old git" is still there 18 months later, although I think the description is perhaps just a wee bit harsh ;).
We'll probably give it one more go - just in case it was an off day - and hopefully the decline will have been reversed.

Had a well kept pint of Tribute plus a prawn baguette and chips with salad - just the job! Bar staff served efficiently even though there were a number of other customers in the late February we visited. Quite dark inside, atmospheric even with many items suspended from the ceiling and elsewhere.. I'll be back sometime later.

Went in on a quiet mid week afternoon so perhaps (I'm hoping) my experience is not typical. Very unwelcoming, stood around for ages waiting to be served in near deserted bar, only wanted a pint and a half and no food needed so our custom didn't seem welcome. Got short changed as bar man didn't seem able to count and breathe at the same time. Great pint of Doom but one drunk local bar prop decided to take the piss out of me when I went in to order our second round. So I left. Atmosphere does not derive from painting a place in dark colours and filling it with a-holes nor by putting tables in the car park amongst the 4x4's. Must try harder.

Can echo the comment about a decent pint of Doom Bar. There were 3 other real ales on, but because it was a stinking hot day I was more interested in the 3 varieties of decent cider! Stowford Press quenched the thirst. Nice crowd of locals and non-locals mixing together. Food was hearty and quickly served. No complaints here.

Every time I go anywhere near North Cornwall (which is every year - we travel up from East Sussex as we have friends there), I always nip into the Cobweb for a pint, as it's reasonably priced - much cheaper than some pubs that have been 'coining it in' since the flood and is more of a locals pub and not some tacky tourist extravaganza.

Also, they serve a good pint of Doom Bar!

The food's not bad - better than some of the 'freeze and reheat' garbage you get in the chain pubs.
YorkieMitch - 5 Mar 2009 16:27
Who is the grumpy old git behind the bar, he upset everyone whilst we were there.
tracynoe - 25 Aug 2008 10:49
Ok but I did think that they had a dislike of tourists. Overheard a few comments at the bar that made us feel un welcome, smiling faces when we were served though. The village itself is still coining it in from the floods so good luck to them

6/10 as the beer was ok

A spectacularly abysmal hostelry; yes, it looks quaint, but the reception for parents with kids is anything but. We made the mistake of visiting The Cobweb one early evening in August 2005; I had just lodged the drinks order at the bar when the 'landlord' espied my 4-yr. old son and barked "you'll have to go elsewhere if you want seats for children !". I turned round and walked out leaving 5 drinks unpaid for on the bar. We wil visit Boscastle again but will steer clear of this unfriendly watering hole; I would astrongly urge anyone with children not to go anywhere near - they don't deserve any family trade !

A cracker of a pub, my favourite on beery trip to Cornwall. Olde world charm without being quaint or chintsy, two seperate bars, atmospheric bric a brac, chairs and fireplace, good ales, nice bar staff, tasty reasonable-priced food- I devoured a crab for a tenner.

In Cornwall

Lovely Pub,good food and ales, bags of atmosphere-but takes a little time for your eyes to adjust to the lighting level!Very enjoyable experience

Why is it listed under "Devon"?

Very good pub. Excellent range, building and garden are lovely and it works really well for visiting Boscastle.
Fart - 28 Jul 2007 19:27
Love this pub and make a point of lunching there whenever in Cornwall. Although the lighting is a bit dingy this is a "real" old pub with a good selection of Ales at a sensible price and an extensive menu that is incredible value for money, The staff have always been friendly and welcoming. Only drawback is the smoking in the bars - this is somewhat ameliorated by the open fire anyway and isn't going to be an issue after July 2007 (hurray!)
Benjiboy - 16 Feb 2007 19:36
Another beer guide entry, well above average pub with comprehensive selection of real ales and good grub. Children are not allowed in the main bars, as usual, but the family room was preferable anyway - the bars were thick with cigarette smoke. The staff were v. friendly considering the place was solid with tourists, including us. The second time we visited, it was suffering from its own success and was truly overrun - it's opposite Boscastle's main car-park. We went elsewhere.

Fntastic, old world, atmospheric inn.Straight out of The Hobbit. Great food as well.
Pertwee - 1 Oct 2005 17:31
good pub with a good range of beers, the fact that the pub has dust and cobwebs adds to the charm.
as for the food i consider it to be of good quality and value, with geneorous portions, with most meals priced at a fiver what do people expect fine dining!
chasepaige - 3 Jan 2005 15:49
Probably better at night than in the day when you might not see the real cobwebs, beer rushed through pipes, food - standard
