The fantastic beer
is what keeps us returning,
despite the oompah

Visited tonight, and despite all the very true criticisms noted below I managed to have an enjoyable session. It must be said that the staff seemed to be even more persistent with this schnapps thing, and I had to persuade them twice or three times to take no for an answer. But the beer was very thirstquenching and like anywhere once you get in conversation with people one beer leads to another. And Roll Out The Barrel was well received by the crowd inside. Obviously as mentioned in a previous review, not a pub to measure Prague by, but a bit of fun albeit overpriced.

With respect to dableywolf, I have known this pub since 1988 and it has ALWAYS been a tourist rip-off. Mr Wolf probably knows a few other decent places to go but sadly many people form their views of Prague pubs solely from visiting this place.

U Fleku is now starting to disappoint me. Their unique dark beer is the only reason to visit. It has turned into a tourist rip-off. 59Kc and rising for a short measure. Have a couple of beers for posterity and leave the oompah bands and the Becherova shots to the Germans.

The dark beer was OK, but not as good as I had been led to believe, the place itself is OK. Thats the good side. The staff are persistent with the schnapps, I went there at lunch-time, and despite only having half a dozen 'anorak' customers, the accordian player appeared, and we were charged for the privelege. Cheap by UK standards, dear by Prague standards, glad I've tried it, but I won't be rushing back.

Fantastic, unique, dark beer. Overpriced, but it's worth it. Sit in the courtyard, politely refuse the Becherova (learn "no thankyou" in Czech). Order another. And another . Keep count of the tally marks on your paper. Order more. Pay. Sleep. Go back again. a must-do pub in Prague. Great memorabilia aswell.

I'd say the beer, unique to this pub, is something quite special. Yes, it's a real pain - the staff are ridiculously persistent with the Becherova. They take no for an answer eventually... but they'll be back in five minutes to pester again ("but it is tradition"). Bar staff in Prague are famously surly, but I've no problem with "beer plonk" service, especially when it's this good. Full of singing Teutons, encouraged by the Oom-pah band. I've never been in early enough to miss a German singalong, but advise getting here as early as possible. They have a sing-along cabaret most evenings... if ever there was a MUST-MISS night in Prague, that has to be it.

a so called "traditional" beer hall with all the trimmings of a tourist trap, that said beer is reasonable, however you are rather treated like cattle and the beer is just plonked down in front of you and you really have to persist in getting them to stop serving you.

Sorry, I meant the beer is a lot cheaper in Hostinec U Cerneho Vola.

I rather liked it actually, I take the view that as tourists we are there to contribute to the country as sheep contribute to the farm, by being shorn or fleeced. That said, ten beers, two Becherovkas and two dinners for 28 quid doesn't sound too bad to me, but I am a poncey Londoner. Beer's a lot cheaper in U Fleku.

One visit is enough. Was there this weekend very briefly. The beer wasn't as nice as I remembered it from previous visits and is now 59Kc (about 1.50) for 40cl. That's getting dangerously close to average UK prices - daft. They still pester you with overpriced (70Kc) shots of Becherovka.

First went there in '94 and was pretty much enchanted. Went again earlier this year and, although the beer is still excellent (too right it isn't Porter), the atmosphere got a little grating. A Sunday early afternoon, having trudged for miles through the two foot of snow which fell overnight, we really needed a gentle haven from the cold... but instead, had to sit suffering as two tables of young German tourists blasted out an oompah accompanied singing competition.
Found myself, maybe to counter disturbing anti-Teutonic sentiments, apologising to my girlfriend for having recommended this place, moaning about the (relative)price of the beer and poring over the map for the nearest metro station.
That said, I still think visitors to Prague should come here. Once.
After that, Prague centre having inevitably become one big tourist trap, I can heartily recommed Zizkov which is five minutes out of town by metro/tram.

I'll recommend some specific pubs, but will have to check on the spelling first.

The review below isn't fair. Yes, it is expensive compared to czech pubs not frequented by tourists - but this place is actually special. For starters, its a microbrewery and the beer brewed there is fantastic. You can't have it anywhere else. Secondly, the atmosphere is cracking. The accordion and oompah-oompah band often get beer hall you are in (there are several) singing along, and there is a general air of sheer merriment.

In terms of being expensive - when I was here last (two months ago) a beer was 49 crowns - that is just over a quid - for a 40cl glass. There are good pubs in central Prague where you can get a great 50cl beer for between 25 and 40 crowns crowns. So, yes, U Fleku is charging comparatively high prices. But you get what you pay for, and if you want a laugh and you want to try a beer you can't drink anywhere else, visit here once during a trip to Prague. You won't be disappointed.

Ridiculously overpriced for the area, full of tourists, beer is good but not to the extent that the other cheaper bars in the area don't deliver better value for money. Go if you have to but then move on.
edz314 - 14 Mar 2006 13:25
By the way the beer is NOT a porter, it is a Czech dark lager

Went here a few times when I lived in Prague. If you are visiting the city, you have to go. Politely refuse the Becherovka (referred to as schnapps below, it is in fact a herbal spirit) as it is very, very expensive here. Just drink that wonderful Czech beer. Yes, its twice the price of other places, but its great fun. The food isn't awful but best to eat somewhere else if I was you. Oompah-oompah band are excellent - give the old boys a tip they deserve it.

The beer and schnapps may be overpriced by Czech standards, but for a Norwegian no beer abroad is overpriced! Worth going to for their one and only beer, which is very good. The infamous schnapps (which I drank AFTER the beer) was actually not too bad. Did not eat on our visit.

'Votch out vor my command-Zen ve vill invade Prague, unt ze rest off ze vorld vill be OURS'!
Middle aged Germans getting their knees up to Frau Braun.....Oompah band etc-Looked like an edited scene from The Odessa File.
Couple of large rooms & a big courtyard-makes for lots of punters...Flek dark beer (49cr) is very tasty & pretty strong.Waiters do try to get you on the shorts...Worth checking out for a couple of beers

I went to this pub at Easter 2005. It was my first port of call on my first visit to the city. I was surprised to discover that you could have anything to drink so long as it was the home brewed porter; conveniently it was also black. I managed to repel the schnapps after the first assault without any trouble. I enjoyed the atmosphere that I assumed to be typically Czech and the menu also matched up to the guide book's description of Czech cuisine, though the breaks when the ooom pah band(how do you spell that?) went into other rooms were welcome after a short stint.
Recommended if you've not been before, just for the novelty.

Sure its a tourist hole but it's still freakin' great. Yummy porter.
Dr_J - 3 May 2005 03:39
The beer makes it a 'must-visit' place - although its a terrible tourist trap... if its quiet and you can keep away from English/East German beer parties, and the tedious oopm-hah band, then you've done very well.

This is Prague's oldest brew pub, established at the end of the 15th century.

The building is naturally medieval in style, and encompasses several distnict drniking areas.

The pub brews one beer for sale on the premises only, a complex flavoured dark 13 degree (approx 5.5%) porter called FLEKOVSKY LEZAK, exquisitely balanced between sweetness and bitterness.

A wide selection of good quality food is available, and I recommend the ghoulash and dumplings. Although this is not the cheapest pub in Prague, it is still worth a visit.

If you don't speak Czech beware of one thing only: the staff are instructed to bring schnapps to your table, and take any response other than "Ne!" (meaning no) to be yes. All the tourist guides correctly warn that it is very expensive, tastes like Meths and is added to your bill whether you asked for it or not. I found, however, that when saying no, they were quite reasonable about it.

All in all, this is an essential place to visit when in Prague.
