Directed in yesterday as it was the only pub in the vicinity of Roots Hall welcoming away fans.

Friendly and attentive staff with quick service.

Uninspiring beer selection. Bombardier was the only ale. My pint was from a new barrel and perfectly drinkable. My mate's Maltsmiths IPA was on the cold side.

Reading previous comments, it's obviously been through some ups and downs so good luck to them.

Went there yesterday with some pals, friendly bunch, had a joke with the girl behind the bar, the guy behind the bar was polite too and put a nice shamrock in my Guinness, good booze, good crowd, friendly, no problems, it's not the first time I have been there either!

I have been a local for the blue boar since i turned 18 and have watched it pass through a few peoples hands and would like to say the following.

yes there has been some tough times in there but much recently it's shown a great improvemont not just to the punters but the standards of a pub. Finally something has been done about the floor which is now carpeted the beer taps are all functional and the staff there are brilliant.

anyone who says otherwise i reccomend that you take a trip down there asap.

and as for the landlady who was rude to anyone in the past no longer works there but she knew how to run a pub although did have a way with words.

Im sorry you dont seem to like the landladys low tolerance for crap from out of line customers, but as she's been running pubs for over ten years and has been very succesful in doing so, I think she knows what she's doing. As for your defamatory attack on her,she would not be as succesfull in her industry if she went around "yelling vile abuse at staff and customers" and would not have the bar packed with customers each week, which clearly speaks for itself. Finally the comment about the pool player being kicked off the team smells slightly of sour grapes to me as there are already 2 new teams I think.

I went into the blue boar for a pool match last night, it started off well and then a blonde at the end of the bar started being vile and abusive to not only some of the customers but also the staff behind the bar. Yelling obscenities at some of the pool players and being very rude in general. She was completely out of it and very drunk! I was wondering why the staff behind the bar were tolerating such abuse being thrown at customers (one of which was told he wasn't allowed to be on there pool team any longer as she didn't like him) she continued to show her self up and just as I was about to ask one of the ladies behind the bar why she was aloud to get away with it and hadn't been asked to leave I realised that she was the landlady! The atmosphere was dreadful and I for one shall never go back as long as she is there. Other than that I had great service From behind the bar with a lovely smile and a bit of friendly banter

Called in before the Southend match yesterday to find only lager and Guinness available - two handpumps on the bar but both were out of action, despite the place being relatively quiet. Otherwise it had the makings of a half decent pub - reasonable atmosphere, friendly enough staff, pool table, quiz machine and sport on TV.

Well done the Blue Boar. I have seen the recent changes and I had a very pleasant night last week. A place to sit and read one of the many and varied books provided on the bookshelves. Beer was in perfect condition, a place to take your girlfriend for a relaxed glass of wine in a yet vibrant environment. It was so good to see something going on in each corner. Pool, music, games machines and tv. No food was on offer although I'm told that may soon change. The place felt as it did 20 years ago. Damn good place to kill some time.

The Management in this pub are hostile to say the least. The bar and carpet was dirty and the beer not great. Avoid it if you want to complain as you may ,like us, be met with a barrage of abuse.

Visited this pub for the first time in 30 years before a game at the adjacent SUFC. I know that things seem bigger when you are little but this pub seemed to have shrunk. Found out that it was in fact a lot bigger before they built flats at the back. Still we had a very pleasant couple of hours. Door staff were very professional even to us away fans. Probably helped that I went to school with his brother. Do not try and get in if you look anywhere under 21 but all the better for it. Reccomended.

one thig lacking in this pub - at atmosphere! clean and pleasant enough - but not my pub of choice..

It takes nerve to go into this pub because you can't see inside from the street. But it's a pleasant enough place with plenty of tables. Large TV but you can sit behind it to avoid it. Good Thai food available all day at weekends, also Mon-Fri lunchtimes and Tue-Fri evenings. Only one real ale - Flowers IPA served in a Greene King IPA glass! - but it was fine.
