user reviews of the Greyhound, Bromley

please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.

I agree with the previous reviewer. This was easily the better of the Wetherspoon's in Bromley. The interior felt far more cosy than the Richmal Crompton and the location was much more amenable for a pub crawl, with many other decent options on this part of the High Street. Ales were Greene King IPA & Abbot, Sharp's Doom Bar, Sambrook's Wandle, Elgood's Mamma Meerkat, Nelson Nelson's Blood, JW Lee's Cosmic Brew & Evan Evans Cwrw. Ciders were Old Rosie & Black Dragon. I wish I had chosen this place to have had my breakfast!

Pretty decent for a Wetherspoons. Significantly better than the one at Bromley South. Larger than it looks from the outside, plenty of ales always on, currently ranging in the £2.39-£2.69 price range.

Does what it says on the tin. Always busy, never a bad pint and always a decent selection

What you would expect from a Spoons pub! Always seems to be busy and do feel some empathy for the staff behind the bar who seem constantly run off their feet - good selection of beers and ales and decent enough food but to be honest, this is the reason people go to Wetherspoons pubs. Atmosphere good, lots of families, prams and old boys supping their ale

Went in yesterday with family, eight of us in all including 2 children. Food cooked well and served very quick, all of us able to eat together without waiting. Beer good as ever, rarely get a dodgy pint in "Spoons". Eight meals with drinks £60. My mum said her fish and chips was better than Harry Ramsdens premierre store. Overall this is one of the better Wetherspoons, although all but a tiny minority are perfectly OK.

Popped in for a quick pint last Saturday after finishing some shopping in town.

Neigh packed to the rathers, with families, shoppers and locals. A lot of food was ordered and served, as with most Wetherspoon’s the food is cheap and most of the time decent.

I stopped for around 30 minutes enjoying my pint of American Ale.

Decent standard ‘spoons, but they do need a few more lights or at least brighter bulbs.

Not sure I’d want to spend all afternoon or evening here

Wetherspoon's conversion of a failing pub which was dragging this end of Bromley down. I used to frequent The Greyhound 10 years ago and even after a face lift the pub was on it's backside.

Nicely converted with a full wooden interior and pictures of old Bromley on the wall.

10 pumps dispensing 10 ales, Ruddles, Pride, Abbot, Doom Bar and 6 guests which included numerous Christmas ales.

Large seating area for food out to the left of the pub as you enter beyond the toilets

Fairly busy on the Saturday afternoon I visited, nice enough crowd.

seems to have settled down a bit, but at the front is still DSS land, but gets better the more you go futher in.

Service and food is good, but the main problem is the food, the staff try and get it out as fast as possible, which either leads to it being over prepped or sent out under cooked and cold.

9 months on and this is our regular lunchtime haunt. Standards remain high and the 7 guest ales on display are regularly changed. It remains an eatery rather than a drinker's pub but we can always find a spare table. The fact that the place is always busy says it all. Prices are currently 2.55 for the guest beers. OK not all of them will be up to scratch but they seem to get it right 9 times out of 10. There remains plenty of variation of styles and it does come down to individual tastes.

This has reopened as a JDW.
5355 - 8 Feb 2012 12:17
Visited to-day. Can't quite make my mind up about this JDW pub. Tends to be a little on the dark side with an enormous amount of oak stained wood panelling. The gent's toilet are very clean and functional but are not immediately apparent as they are hidden by a rather wide wall.

6 guest beers on, 2 of which were definitely passed their sell-by-date. As already mentioned prices are much higher for both the beers and the food. 2 examples; a 14 oz rump steak being 1p short of 13 and how can it be justified for 2 small fish cakes with chips etc to cost 6 17.

It was very noticeable, especially when we were there, that this pub was definitely a candidate for 'god's waiting room'! ( I can say that as I am in that age group!!).

One good point is the number of staff working there. Compared with most other Wetherspoons this came as quite a shock.

I feel I wouldn't visit again unless I was in the area as it is definitely preferable to their other one at the opposite end of the High Street.

Well I did a very thorougher visit there Sunday lunch time, and in the end, quite liked it.

The decor is brilliant, it's all new and shinny, very clean and spotless. The toilets are clean and very functional.
Ther have what I can only call a servery, this is a couple of stainless steel hot shelves that are open onto the pub,
giving a sort of open visibility to the kitchen area. The furniture is a mixture of different chairs, Deliberately
done tom break up the appearance of a the dinning area.

The staff are ok, but seem to be mostly female all with long dark hair. The manager appears to be from the Bromley
South branch, a lookalike for Jeff Capes and his welsh wife. The staff are just leaning the ropes, and it took about
3 attempts to get one of the guest ales, including having to point to it.

As to the era, well the rule of thumb is the further in, the better it gets. On Sunday lunch the place was packed with diners,
most of them for the first time. The DSS tend to be smokers, and these tend to stick near the front doors, and while I
was there the manager was keeping his eye on people that had been barred but still kept hanging about.

Prices are slightly higher, about 20 a drink more, and meals between 50p to 1 more. This is a comparison to the Weatherspoons
at Bromley South, however this one is just about to undergo a refurbishment, so I expect the prices here are about to go up
after the over haul has been completed.

So in summary, It's a nice place, good beer selection, excellent food, nice cheap place to take the in-laws, but make sure
you go well past the front of house and keep away from the feral front door hoggers, or least until the management have had
a chance to stop them from even hanging about outside.

I walked through The Greyhound on it's opening day. First thing that struck me were some scary types at the front of the pub. Past them were very busy tables full of what looked like Costa Del Crime types. I didn't feel at all comfortable, but I went back a couple of hours later to try a half. It was a lovely ale - 1.22 - but if anything the clientele looked even more intimidating.

I left to take an updated photo of the pub's front, but after one shot I was clocked by three drinkers who looked like they'd break my legs if I didn't stop.

Next day a shopkeeper said there'd been some trouble the previous night, and I can confirm there was trouble on Thursday evening, and I saw police were present. Fantastic start...

Spritus - 24 Jul 2011 17:44

I have had 2 seperate reports that there was a fight there at about 6pm on thursday evening, so looks like this one has kicked off with a very bad start. Pity because the one near Bromley South is so good like that. I intend to give it a good audit this Saturday, and will post again.
I did hear rumours that they wanted this one to be a bit more up market, well if thier idea of up market is to charge another 30p per pint, then I'm just not sure where this one is going. Wonder if the food is a bit dearer as well.

Shagnastie - 22 Jul 2011 10:14
Re-opened today as a Wetherspoons. The rear has been extended to provide more dining space and they were still working on the roof terrace.

The place was heaving when I visited at 1.00pm and although I saw a woman being carried out in the first 20 minutes worse for wear it looks as though it will appeal to women shoppers and a more mature clientele.

The only negative was that a pint of the guest ales was 2.45 (30p a pint more than the Richmal Crompton in Bromley South).
blackheatheagle - 19 Jul 2011 20:54
Yes it is going to be a Wetherspoons, and should be opening in July some time. About half the staff from the Bromley South
Wetherspoons are going to move up there, and as the Bromley South one is a Lloyds Bar with music for the teenagers, let's hope this one
is going to be a bit more like the Partridge opposite, that is, if you look under 25 when you walk in, you just get
starred at and made to feel uncomfortable.
This area of Bromley could well do with a pub cheaper than the Partridge, less yuppie that the Tom Foolary, more
normal than the Star and Garter and more sophisticated that the Swan and Mitre, and lets hope that opening of
a Wetherspoons here does'nt put any of them out of buisness, but dont hold your breath.
Shagnastie - 9 May 2011 16:27
The site looks set to become a Wetherspoons - with the usual late night boozing, and the rest to be expected. Another reason to avoid going anywhere near the high street after about 7pm. Grrrrr!!
trottis - 19 Aug 2010 13:33
SHUT... presumably as the chavs don't have the money to put over the bar. Thank god it's gone
simonbromley - 4 Dec 2006 18:59
this pub makes me want to cry-it is so god damn lame!!!!
ive been there about 4 times and the last was on friday last weekend, and it has no atmosphere-no one dances, the girls have attitude with any other bird that might be better looking then them.
Please dont waste your time going here, the only good thing is that is open til 12, i stayed at walkabout til 10:30 then went to greyhound for like 45minutes, i had to cut it short, i thought i was gonna cry from boredom!!!!!!!!
law69 - 23 Sep 2005 12:27
A pub which appears quieter now, but the chavs inside made up for their lack of numbers with their offensive shouting. Two of the least friendly grunts in Bromley guard the front door with fight-provoking comments made at passers-by. Prices reasonable, bar staff friendly, shame about the rest of the problems.
juliatheakston - 31 Jul 2005 16:22
Good to start the night off. cheap drinks, good music, good place to chill out. dont go there early because its empty.
sam_05 - 6 Jun 2005 19:01
Well,. the greyhound used to be known as the youth club of bromley at night-time, BUT, and there is a BIG but, since they have had new bouncers it has got ALOT, and thats a hell of alot better in there, And now it is the Royal BELL, which has taken ovr the name of 'YOUTH' club.
The bouncers I.D Most people now as they walk in,and if they see any1 which they think may be under age inside they ask those too. Also they have a nononsence aproach to fighting and arguing. The music has got better,. with a little help from the public TELLING the D.J what they want to be hearing. With its late night licence of 12 and its wicked atmosphere, i recomend the 'Greyhound' to anyone who wants to start the night off from 10-12 then go off to a night club!
Lem - 23 May 2005 19:26
great pub, interestin music?! a bit of cheesy 80's pop never hurt anyone though ey! good for a dance and a night out wid your mates. cheap drinks bouncers are a bit up tight though but only doing their job
kate_xx - 26 Jan 2005 12:09
LOL... Lucie_Lu say's it all for me. (Even worse when it was the Townhouse... so slighty better) My mates band The Black Russions play there once in a bluemoon so look out for them & give them you're support.
natty_ - 21 Jan 2005 12:33
great weekend venue 18-30 paradise, wide variety of music great atmosphere, friendly efficient service
anonymous - 26 Nov 2004 15:13
QUALITY NIGHT OUT BABY!!!!!!!!!
JESSICA - 14 Oct 2004 22:08
The average age of the customers is about 15. The noise they call music is too loud and the service is slow.
Peter - 5 Sep 2004 10:32
best to cum here pissed. Good music but overcrowded and many people seem high on something other than alcohol
Amy - 1 Sep 2004 23:18
Tony the DJ on a Thursday night is great, he always gets me going!!!
Dave - 31 Aug 2004 17:19
