user reviews of the Duke of York, Clerkenwell

please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.

Nicely refurbished since my last visit and, as previous reviewer says, the name has been changed to the Clerk and Well. The layout remains pretty much the same though with a large space at the front of the bar and a smaller area with pool table tucked away to the left and rear of the bar. A couple of wall mounted flat screens cater for the footy fans.

Only two pumps but Oxford Gold and Landlord - two I like - so I wasn't too disappointed. I had a well kept pint of Landlord. I didn't try the food so can't really comment on that aspect but this is a nice place for a pint.

This pub is now called the Clerk & Well and has new management. Where the previous Thai food was cooked by Thai's, the quality of the food is worse than a iceland microwave meal. The portions are smaller, the prices are higher, the service is next to useless. The staff are too over enthusiastic - they could at least wait until you're finished eating before removing your napkin from the table! If they're going to cook Thai food, they should at least learn how to do it! Thai curry shouldn't have the consistency of scotch broth! All in all - avoid this pub and save your money for elsewhere!

always wary when I see Thai Food in a Pub but it works here. Nothing fancy just a good Pub.

Genuine boozer with top notch thai food to soak up pints while watching Sky Sports. What more could you ask for in a great spot?

Large pub on the main road with a pool table in one corner. It was quite late when I arrive and there seemed to be quite a few drunks in there which never appeals. There is nothing that stands out about this pub and you would be better of walking 10 minutes more to the Lamb or Calthorpe

Mediocre refurbished pub on the main road. Advertises a number of real ales but when I ducked in three out of four pump clips were turned round. The only available ale was Bombardier, which was unexciting to say the least. Utterly unmemorable in every way.

Terrible pub, Landlady who is extremely unfriendly....

Thew beer is cheap but reflected on the quality, My pint of bombardier tasted iike a Yeast Yougart! The food is interesting but if i wanted thai food id go to a thai restaurant, it feels like it is limiting its customers due to the restricted food offer. TV was on even though there was only 7 people in - no one actually watching the rolling sky sports news.....this pub is not thinking about its carbon footprint obviously!!!

We went on a local Pub crawl today startin here. TV was on and loud and intrusive...Food on offer was Thai but with one problem, the kitchen was closed.Otherwise we had decent beers and wines and a game of pool. Staff member was quite friendly.

Earl_Barrett, forgive my ignorance, but what the f*ck are you talking about.

Does anyone know what happened to Paddy Dowling who was Manager here in the early 90's?

I like this pub on every level except for the large television in the corner. I find this kills the atmosphere and is totally anti-social.... otherwise a nice London pub with good food and beer.

Not bad this is more of a bar then a straight up pub, back in the 90's im sure the YG had a micro brewery attached to it, however that was in the past. As a bar it's so so but it's functional and inoffensive, nice place for apres work drinkums, so the clientle tend to be office workers from the local environs. I have noticed on a lot of BITE postings that their seems to be a strong odium towards the suit wearing after work crowd, why is that? I have always found the service at this bar pleasant and efficient and the clientele are nice and relaxed

A great pub, despite being on the main road and a mecca for cycle couriers - you know, the ones who always wait their turn at the bar, because they are in no rush at all.

A convivial landlord, pleasant, slightly scruffed-up decor, a pool table and decent Thai food (although possibly inferior to the nearby King's Arms) make for a pleasing combination.

Great pub the new Manager has settled in and the bar seems busy again
food is awesome the thai guys really can cook
wicked leather arm chairs pity only four of the but they are a hot spot to sit and watch the world go by

yeah decent in here. widescreen - why, why, why?

I've never liked this place and don't see why some rate it so highly. Never seems to have a nice atmosphere, too much sport, rubbish beer.

Very popular with cycle couriers, clearly evidenced at certain times of the day, which is a point of interest.

Last poster who said "suits" fill the pubs in that area - I don't know what you mean. The area is mainly filled with "creatives" and media types - no suits to be seen in any local pubs. Too far from the city for that.

Excellent pub away from the 'suits' who usually fill the pubs in the area. Staff have lots of character adn the Thai food is great and a bargain. Excellent place to while away a weekend afternoon as well.

Rammed with couriers. Who'll usually try and muscle you off the pool table or push you out of they way. Not on my watch.

It's alright, but not a great pub. The thai food is osmething special though. well worth a visit for that.
thebigman - 23 Sep 2005 11:26
Not bad.
Been there on a few all nighters.
Gets RAMMED with couriers in the evenings.

Don't like Tai food so never eat in here.

Landlady once looked like she wanted to kill us for being a tad too rowdy.

Agree with the comments below, also offering a safe(ish) place to lock up a bicycle, making it an ideal haunt of cycle couriers and the like.
lostsheep - 13 Sep 2005 22:28
Busy pub with long tables ideal for a sociable drink. Pool table, big, bright and reasonable beer.

A decent boozer in a area, that was once rough and ready, but is now every "wannabie working class, middle class tw*ts" favourite part of town. One of the few pubs where the locals still look like the Italian decent, that they are!! Well worth a visit!!!!!
woodgreenspur - 5 Jul 2005 13:37
Great boozer. Very variable group of drinkers. Great value and good food.
Having screens, pool and foos make it ideal for most.
rbaird - 18 Feb 2005 15:24
High ceilinged pub at north end of Leather Lane market easily spotted due to the red paint both inside and out. Directors on hand pump and good value Thai meals
