Didn't notice the smell and didn't eat; the pub remains a cosy, attractive local with well-kept beers.

This is a nice pub thats spoilt by the smell from the gents. We have visited about 4 or 5 times and providing you sit away from the toilets it,s ok. The beer selection has been very good, Adnams Broadside, Timothy Taylor, Nelsons Revenge, Woodefordes Nog to name a few. Quality was also good on all my pints but I did see someone take his Harwich brewery beer back because it was cloudy. Beerwise this is a dear pub, the cheapest pint I had was 3.00 (half of Stella 1.75) These are London prices. The food was good (and cheap) Cod + Chips 4.99. Steak 5.99. Most other meals were about 7/9.00. Nice garden for kids and fancy seating. Friendly staff. Dogs allowed. Would have got a higher rating if not for that smell!

This pub is a travesty from what it used to be. The toilets stink and the smell comes in to the bar area. Sort it out.

Unfortunately I have to agree with the last correspondent. Our group of 5 waited 40 minutes for food in this mostly empty pub. When it came, it was not hot, and of very average qualty for the price. Another group (of 3) complained about their 45min wait, and were told it was because they were busy!

This pub has gone downhill recently. The beer and other drinks are expensive, the beer range has been reduced. The food's not as good as it used to be either.

Although steeped in history this pub is very much part of a working village. With a good-sized car park and spacious garden it caters well for the traveller and villager alike. Food is top-of-the-range pub grub at very reasonable prices and I've always found the beer in excellent condition.

Typical unspoilt and largely unmodernised Essex country pub, with a superb garden (particularly for children). Only downside was average quality beer.

A real traditional pub with a good range of well-kept beers, plus a good value, if slightly limited, menu of decent pub grub. Large garden is nice in summer. Only slight drawback is that locals are usually crowded around the bar and you have to muscle through to get served, and the service, while always OK, is sometimes a little less than friendly.

This is a stunning 14th centey grade 2 listed pub with a friendly welcoming atmosphere.Ssteve and Ruth have been at the pub for just under 2 years and have realy turned the place around in that time. They serve a good selection of fine real ales that are superbly kept, they have a good local that is fast becoming the hub of the villige. They cater for the community as a whole as families are very welcome with a play area for the kids. This is a gem of a pub, the sort that we are fast losing in this country and every well worth a visit. I would highly recomend you take the time to check it out for yourself.
