Sadly this Pub closed its doors for the last time in Feb 2015 – soon due for demolition.

Would not recommend this pub. The staff are rude and on Sunday night at 9pm come around with plastic cups to put your drinks in so they can wash up!! Wanted everyone out so they could have afters. They should go to the Cornershop pub for some lessons on how to do it right!!
pfs - 11 Nov 2013 09:52
have used this place a few times and found it ok
becks007 - 17 Jan 2013 17:16
Only Polish being spoken when i visited.
nickthefish - 27 Aug 2012 10:17
Just an average pub for the area - pleasant enough bar staff - average Ale, pint of Deuchars. Pleasant surroundings - mainly original features. We stayed for one drink, mainly because it was busy & there was nowhere to sit comfortably - One gripe, Disabled facilities were blocked by a table & 3 chairs - not really the done thing. Would recommend that previous posters who were unhappy with the service give it another go - maybe they have had a staff change since their experiences, who knows!
If I had been rating against the Golden Heart (also Trumans) down the road, The Gun would have scored a 10!

Met a friend in here on Friday night. Place was heaving with 'hooray henrys' paying for a round with credit cards - sure, that speeds up the service - and loud music. They had a nice selection of real ales: the Deuchars was pleasant, as was the Greene King IPA, although for a suburbian lad like me 3.40 a pint is a bit steep. Quaint wood panelled decor. We did find a quiet cubby hole where we could chat. Left to eat in the excellent Lahore Kebab House (better than the rip off joints in Brick Lane).

Large pub just south of the Bishops Square development. This has a slightly more "gor-blimey" feel to it than some of the boozers in this area, with a mixed clientele of local office workers and other tradesmen. Three or four real ales when I visited, although none of a particularly exciting nature. I went for the Deuchars, which was very drinkable despite being somewhat on the cold side. The most noteworthy feature of the pub is probably the wood panelling. Above average in a mediocre area for pubs.

just to reiterate the guvnor is a prat.

went along after being told stories by my dad that the Masons used to meet here - apparently you could hear them stamping their feet in the room above the bar now and then in ceremony - interesting! there were certainly a few gents in all black suits and ties.......nice place - busy but quite homely.
adamwalsh - 5 Jun 2010 22:00
I had my drink cleared away while I was in the loo and my companion wasn't looking, and the surly Scottish landlord couldn't care less. Losing a quid's worth of beer is trivial, but bad management like that is just stupid.
Wandering_Star - 3 Mar 2010 02:38
One of the better pubs close to the east side entrance of Spitalfields market, but thats not saying too much when considering the other local hostelries. However the Gun is a reasonable sized corner pub, interesting dcor, and the same four real ales as described by Rex below. Again the Deuchars was not the best pint of IPA Ive had but perfectly drinkable. And no problem being served, although it was quite busy with the Sunday market crowd.
Gann - 1 Feb 2010 14:22
Though it is not nearly the same place, The Gun will always hold a special place in my heart. 20+ years ago my wife and I stumbled upon this pub as we wandered through Spitalfields market. The landlord was as nice as person as you could meet and we felt so completely at home. Since then, as the area has transformed, so has the pub. The crowd is a bit younger, the staff more impersonal, but the pub itself hasn't changed too much.

We still had a good pint of Bombadier and it was a great place to get out of the rain. Service was fine and everyone was having a good time.
NM_Ale_Drinker - 9 Jan 2010 17:50
A potentially a good pub with some nice decor, but ruined by there being wall to wall TVs and the incredibly surly staff.
aaroncp - 2 Nov 2009 21:32
Four real ales on when I was in at lunchtime earlier this week Deuchars IPA, GKIPA, Bombardier and Broadside. The Deuchars was not brilliant, but drinkable. Quite interesting dcor guns (of course) and other various militaria adorn the walls, and the carpet sports a large cannon motif, which is really unusual. The wood panelled walls are an attractive feature, and it also has the most unusual ceiling I have seen white plastic/glass panels?

There is a pool table in a separate side room. This is a decent enough pub without being anything special. I wouldnt recommend going there just for the beer though.
RexRattus - 22 Feb 2009 21:03
This place is nothing spectacular, but handy if you want a game of pool and dont want to queue for ages at the bar. Greene King IPA, Bombardier, Deuchars and Adnams were all available on my visit along with some standard lagers. My pint of Deuchars was up to scratch.

There are three plasma screens, one of which was playing a music channel and the other two were showing a muted Sky Sports News feed. There was a pretty mixed crowd and the staff seemed friendly enough, if maybe a little odd.

This is the sort of place Id go for a couple of pints after work, but as I work miles away Ill probably never visit here again.
Strongers - 17 Feb 2009 09:20
Busy pub in Spitalfields Market. Grandfather used to sell apples here about a hundred years age-doubt if he'd recognise the place now! G K IPA, Adnamn's Broadside, Deuchers IPA-all in good condition. Rugby on countless screens:good pub, especially early on a Saturday evening. 6/10

wittenden - 15 Nov 2008 21:59
Was in there Last Night (Friday) got served quick but almost hit by a glass that the Barmaid dropped on the bar. Had to wait for my change for some time whilst the Barmaid added it up on a calculator. Could do with getting a proper till. Other wise ok
HENDO - 13 Sep 2008 16:51
I can imagine the Eastern European bar staff here getting a bit bolshie. Any witty remarks are greeted with blank stares. They are a bit like the Polish cafe workers in the Harry and Paul series. Having said that, there is a good selection of beers which are well kept if a little expensive. You do get a fair share of 'hooray henrys',who get tanked up here before 'going native' and getting ripped off in Brick Lane curry houses.
HornchurchJohn - 12 Sep 2008 16:23
I think this pub's ok and go here fairly regularly. Ok-ish beers and I didn't find the staff too offensive, as per other pub-goers.

They did have a pop at my friend Trev when he asked for a fork though.
Harvor - 3 Jul 2008 11:43
This pub is full of City broker scum who work in the local area. I heard one such creature called Wadada(??) order a "pint of pinot grigio lalalargio" shortly before threatening someone with a pool cue. Sums it up.
cashdog - 18 Jun 2008 17:21
What a lottery this pub is.

Last Thursday the staff rang the bell at 10:30 for last orders (which they at first said was just a joke) and then after ten minutes told us to stop playing pool. I enquired why they were shutting early and the East European girl smiled smugly and said they were a Free House and could do what they liked.

Okay so they're a Free House, but I pointed out that there's a certain expectation for customers to be able to drink until 11pm in a pub on a weekday.

She said they didn't have enough customers (about 20) to stay open. The diminutive Italian bar girl then started swearing at us in Italian. We were ordered to leave the premises at 10:45.

As we left the staff started pulling pints for a lock in.

This could be a great pub in good hands, I especially like the paintings of early European tanks and armoured cars in the pool table area. Shame about the random, irrational 'screw you' behaviour of the staff.
linguinigenie - 3 Mar 2008 11:53
Great boozer. One of my favorites.
leinad - 22 Feb 2008 17:57
Popped in for a couple of jars and a sit down. Whilst other half was about to order at the bar I was asked to vacate the table(by whom it seemed was in charge)for 3 tourists as they were GOING to order food!!!! Forgive me but, food profits concidered, it's a pub and not a busy one at that (and these guys were probably never coming back).
My main issue was being told rather than asked.
Bizarre.
Needless to say we left straight away and ended up in the White Hart where we enjoyed a fair few in peace.
Seb - 10 Feb 2008 13:19
Back street boozer with high street prices, but it is in the City so I suppose we have to live with that. Bit of a tired looking pub and the service can be unpredictable, depends what part of Europe the bar staff comes from.

Millay - 8 Dec 2007 20:24
I have been going to this pub on and off for about 3 years, perhaps twice a month. Generally en route to sausage and mash. The beer is OK and it was OK after the city "gents" have cleared off. Last Monday the sour faced eastern girl (see Henriktheking) gave me the wrong change for a tenner. She refused to check the till - which I thought was the accepted norm. She then refused to talk to the police who I got on the phone. I think the landlord - Mr Pollack? - should get a grip. Looks like a scam to me.

Clearly I won't be going back. There's a good pint of Bombardier round the corner and S&M still a great caff.

Watch your change - Stuart

Well Spitalfields Market has been completely redeveloped but fortunately this has completely bypassed the Gun.

Looks like it was last decorated in about 1960 and is definitely a decent place for a pint - they even have San Miguel on tap which makes a nice change.

The food is basic but quite good - the biggest problem in coming here for lunch is making it past Sausage and Mash without being tempted in.

I have some sympathy with those who complain about the prices but everywhere in the City is that way these days and I'd rather pay in the Gun than some of the plastic bars which now proliferate in the Swquare Mile
murgatroyd - 27 Jan 2007 11:22
Decent East End boozer, just a shame the toilets haven't been replastered since Jack the Ripper was using them.
Drunken_Duncan - 26 Jan 2007 13:07
Average Adnams Broadside 3.20 a pint.....Now that's rip-off Britain. I said 3.20 a Pint!!! and not even top quality!
mrBean - 29 Nov 2006 14:08
Your inane ramblings about television screens leaves me cold, but you have piqued my interest by saying that the Gun is being demolished - I'd ask you to elaborate but I am doubtful that you can post here without prattling on about your "campaign".
anonymous - 26 Nov 2006 21:34
Popped in for a quick drink on the way back from a particularly fiery curry on Brick Lane and was immediately impressed. Bar service was instantaneous and friendly, beer was cold (lager, don't fear real ale fans!)and prices no more or less than anywhere else in the environs. Selection of beers ran to four real ales, three draught lagers and Guiness with a small range of bottles including the increasingly rare Light Ale to supplement them.
The look of the pub is appealing, it's a nice building on a corner for starters and inside you are treated to carpets resplendent with cannon motifs in case you forget where you are and need a visual aid, long curved leather benches that form booths of sorts, a nice bright ceiling, some wood panneling, some much needed rotary ceiling fans and one of those old fashioned display fridges for food, in no particular order.
Clientele when I arrived was devoid of the suits (it was about 9.45 and well after the post work crush after all) and was a good mix of studenty types and more grizzled looking older regulars and the atmosphere was relaxed and cosy.
Hope to visit again in the near future and may try the food next time which I am assured by reliable sources is very good.
Mr.Monkfish - 3 Aug 2006 09:42
I've not been to this pub before but I had a few observations on my one visit. Nice old fashioned pub, in the city so lots of suits but they seemed quite inoffensive.

However, I was served a bad pint of Youngs, which the barman refused to change, in a fairly unpleasant fashion. At the end of the day that is a reason I wouldn't drink there again, and would urge real ale drinkers to avoid it. A real shame.
anonymous - 27 Jul 2006 18:28
Fairly run-of-the-mill sort of pub. Popular with shoppers from the nearby markets. The beer was OK although not all that cheap.
Muzthing - 12 Dec 2005 12:01
I dunno what on earth 'almills' is on about. It's called The Gun because a couple of hundred years ago part of Spitalfields was a training area for a London militia which used artillery guns. Maybe they should rename it the Fluffy Bunny to keep him/her happy.

Anyway, I like this pub. It doesn't seem to have been entirely invaded by Nathan Barley and his mates unlike the Golden Heart round the corner.

Albert_Campion - 9 Dec 2005 16:29
The pub itself is ok. Some of the punters are annoying, especially the suits on 20K a year who act like millionaires. there is a sour faced eastern European girl who works there sometimes who looks like her face would crack if she smiled. There is a pool table and the beer is well kept.

henriktheking - 9 Nov 2005 16:25
A nice pub for a meal and a pint.
After some strenuous (forced) shopping hours this is the perfect pub for afternoon dining.
Even though the area slowly has been overtaken and surrounded by modern City high-rise buildings, I still feel the atmosphere relaxed and genuine.

hgr - 24 Oct 2005 11:18
A few daft comments of late. This is a proper old boozer. Not enough if these places left. It's a pub that attracts an eclectic mix of drinkers but that's never a bad thing, surely ? Dave is the landlord - and a very good one at that - not the amusingly curt Jock you refer to, Mr Sock.
PieFace - 18 Oct 2005 10:53
Where do i start? The interior of the pub hasn't been touched for (at least what looks like) 30 years. The clientele is a strange mix of braying city-boys and clueless locals. Of particular note is the fat scottish landlord who'll happily give you a parting earful of abuse.

This place would almost be worth a visit in a circus style if it wasn't for the final insult of being charged over the odds for a near undrinkable pint of lager. And given I can't think of a worse pub within 5 minutes walk, why bother?

Avoid.
jason_sock - 22 Jul 2005 15:59
Quite a lot (more) change going on in the area at the moment now that they've knocked half of Spitalfields Market down. But The Gun survives as it always will. Will be there this Friday for our annual close-season drinks.
PieFace - 21 Jun 2005 14:21
I disagree slightly with Mr. Lash here.

Although a good place for watching football the real ales are kept very badly.

I do find myself returning though. I'm not sure why because Dirty Dicks is better... Variety? I suppose it does have a down-to-earth atmosphere which is unusual for the city. With all the development nearby it will probably change.
Spel_Unca - 22 Dec 2004 16:14
Good old fashioned boozer. The beer isn't anything to write home about (though there's nothing worng with it - and I think it's a freehouse which is always to be welcomed) but the place has quite an 'honest' feel about it and the staff/licensees are friendly. Good place to hide from colleagues - also to watch footie on one of the screens
MrLash - 22 Dec 2004 15:37
An excellent layout for a pub, absolute first class, it even has carpet with The Gun inn sign in the pattern. So why by 8pm on a Sunday had the place nearly run out of alcohol? All they had left on tap was Kronenburg - not even any Strongbow or anything. I can go to a bad house party if I want to be left with that dilemma. Poor show.
travis - 14 Sep 2004 13:17
Very enjoyable, at last a pub in the city where you can sit down, get to the bar quickly..
stephen levy - 30 Jun 2004 11:32
I hope this place is not going downhill but the current batch of E.European barmaids, (although OK on the eye), struggle so match with the lingo that you often get the wrong bitter.
PieFace - 8 Apr 2004 12:54
This is a pretty decent old boozer I must say. I have only been there a few times, sometimes on my tod and other times with friends. Every time has been good. There really is a lovely atmosphere.
Dickboy - 10 Mar 2004 11:15
This pub's a cracker. Beer and food is always just right. A good all rounder - cozy during the winter and perfect to stand outside of in the summer. Always go there with my Gooner mates during the closes season !
Pie Face - 18 Jul 2003 13:54
THE BEST THINGS ABOUT THIS PUB ARE THE FRIENDLY ATMOSPHERE AS SOON AS YOU ARRIVE,THE FRIENDLY BAR STAFF & MANAGEMENT,TOP QUALITY BAR AND RESTAURANT FOOD AND GREAT BEER!
MICHAEL PAYNE - 13 Apr 2003 12:37
Traditional East End Boozer, dying breed. Family run for years, top english food & silver service in the upstairs Grenadier restaurant, steak & kidney pudding recommended.
Pool table, Sky etc regular knees ups. Enough said.
