Identi-kit Ember inn doing decent food and most of the time decent beer. It's not going to be full of individual character but what it does it generally does fairly well. Service is 100 times better than the Shirley Inn down the road.

Agree with slerpy's comments, but the quality of the real ale is not always as it should be.I wonder if this is down to poor cellar-work,or that the ales d'ont turn around fast enough.Comments please.

That last poster is on something. The Car park is £1.00 refundable on ANY purchase, the pub would have the world and his wife blocking the car park otherwise, it is a shame but it is probably the only solution.Downton's chocolate and Orange stout is to die for. Clearly should be in the guide but not many of the arthritic CAMRA gang get out of Central Croydon hence the Town Centre dominance in the GBG.

The Crown is a peaceful upmarket pub which concentrates it efforts on good food and very reasonably priced real ale.The garden is probably the best in the Borough. There are always five real ales available,London Pride, Adnams Broadside, Harvey's Best Bitter appear regularly alongside guest ales such as Rudgate Ruby Mild and Ubu from Purity.Whenever I have stopped for a pint the Crown has been really busy, food probably dominates but not to such an extent that a drinker feels out of place.

This pub now has a New and Experienced Manager. What a difference it is making. There have been some changes to the way Ember is conducting its business and what it is trying to achieve. This pub now has a dining area where you can get table service if you want it but you can also still just go into the bar area and have a drink. The yob element that so many complain about is being stamped out. As with anything new, there is some learning curves for both Staff and the customers that have been in the pub since before the changes.
All in all I have to say the pub is changing for the better. The prices are still good value and you don't feel under pressure to eat up quickly because they need the table.
I look forward to seeing this pub in 3 months time once the manager has finished her magic.

charging to park in a pub car park is an insult to decent customers
i will never go near the place again

Real ale is very much improved, Morrisey-Fox blonde, Harveys, Mordue Etc.8/10 Ale from1.99- 2.40

The food here is cheap and plentiful, the real ale lacks imagination and is very average. My aged mother likes it so her keeness is tempered by my ambivalance. It does what it says on the tin, without any sign or desire for bells and whistles.6/10

This used to be a great pub... what happened to Natasha? she was a great landlady who was friendly and she made the pub a great place to visit... now there has been a refurb and it's just not the same... really busy... slow service... not even seen the new manager!!! I won't be going back!

Not a bad pub, ok for the occasional pint and is alright for a quick cheap bite to eat. Not sure I'd want to make it a regular haunt.

Although the staff are friendly enough, they always apper to be rather busy and I've always had to wit for a while to be served.

Decor is a bit bland and boring and I'm not sure about the comfiness of the tables.

What lets this pub down is the yobs from shirley who drink in it!!!

The pub is a nice size and serves nice food and has a large beer garden. Beer is well kept and are of an average price.

As i said earlier it is let down by loads of thugs and yobs who get agressive when drinking!!!

A really awful pub full of working class yobs, I found this pub poor on every count, I and a friend of mine were attacked in this pub without any reason other than being a 'non Local' I was asked to remove my coat, and myself from a chair, in which i had been sitting, as it was now to be his chair? I was then assaulted by a friend of this yob who was non other than an oficier of the Law! Avoid this pub if a genuine good night out with the chaps is what you want.

Atmosphere is friendly and welcoming. Great selection of ales which appear to be rotated often so good for trying different breweries. Highly recommended.

A balance maintained here between pub and eatery. The staff know their stuff and customer service is friendly. There's a good selection of proper beer, well kept and correctly served, which satisfies the "pub" part of this establishment. We were alsoimpressed by the interest shown by the staff in the product they were serving and their concern: "What do you think of the beer?" we were once asked during a mini beer festival.

The food is Brakes Bros best - the usual culprits from the freezer, but well defrosted and heated thoroughly, and reasonably cheap. Don't expect haut cuisine. This is pub grub with restaurant manners.

Bland middle of the road decor, designed to be as inoffensive as possible to as many people as possible. Take your gran for lunch - she'll love it.

My Local and an excellent pub. Its the sort of pub where you can go to with anyone, your friends, your family. Food is not always top notch but better than many chain pubs. The atmosphere can vary as with any pub in this area. However, its hard to beat for atmosphere on a Friday or Saturday evening. I do and always will have many fond memories of happy summer evening in the garden. I do work in 1500 Mitchell & Butler pubs in and around London, The crown is in the top 10 of those easily. Great Pub.

Well decorated with sofas and comfy chairs. Average selection of ales. Loads of room in the large bar area and huge garden. Not bad for a chain!
Ciderbabecindy - 24 May 2006 14:24
massive pub...although whwhen i went they had only a limited selection of ales - had just ran out of speckled, had to settlee for a pint of pride. Good food for reasonably cheaper prices, in my opinion nicer than spoons, although a little more expensive. atmosphere a bit dead, but a nice pub to pop into for a quick pint on the way to brommers or croydon

Hey been quiet a regular here. Quiz nights are usually quiet fun (won a few!!). Generally very friendly atmosphere (compared to another pub in the chain - The Railway, West Wickham) Drinks and food prices are Ok, had a few meals never needed to complain.
In the winter there are big cosy fires and in teh summer a huge beer garden.
Overall - Good Pub

This is a chain pub owned by Mitchells and Butler trading under the Ember Inns Brand. The Food is just awful, over cooked steaks and burgers that look like the come out of a tin. The atmosphere is that of a chain, ie Harvester, Brewsters and the like. Its not a comfy pub to go have a pint and a relax as it is pretty souless. The Beer is maintained to a decent quality and good selection of wine, but that doesnt make up for the void in the atmosphere.

Great local pub! Really nice garden in the back for the summer months, and the inside's fantastic for the winter. Highly recommended.
