New management. Friendly enough though and not prejudiced against drinkers. Ale not in the best condition on my visit. Food very nice quality but at the top end price-wise and meagre portions.

Friendly and efficient service, although there were only two ales available on the handles (clip on another handle was turned around) my pint was in very good condition and the spiced parsnip soup was delicious. Many tables were reserved, there is another bar to the rear and further tables which were at a lower level to the left when entering. A busy pub/restaurant which was obviously popular when we were there.

umm... still great for service, beer fine but limited to Badger (no guest ale) and the offering never changes which is a shame with so many good ales out there locally. May be a 'tie' issue? Food still good but the menu never varies so i will have to look elsewhere for a while unti they change things a bit.

Just revisted for sunday lunch - due to weather (at the time of my visit) they had not had there usual food delivery so lunch was a bit scratch but a decent effort (and they did warn us of the limited menu). Ale (Sussex) was excellent and the service and atmosphere first claas too.

A fine pub that remains a pub that does food rather than the other way round. Very friendly staff and owners, Badger based ales all round, excellent fish and chips - up there with the best of the gastro pub folks for this sort of dish - fresh and incredibly fast service. The menu is not exactly inspiring otherwise - the place is still a basic pub that is doing all the right things in terms of service and practicality. The havent ripped out the pub it is still standard carpet, dark wood classic furniture, stuff hanging from rafters sort of place. An example of how to bring a pub into the modern era without ripping its heart out. Recommended.

Came with bunch of lads for a leaving lunch - landlord/lady were very friendly and accomodating, ale was excellent if at the higher end pricewise, and everybody enjoyed the food which was fine for price. Nice to see the pub has kept a public bar. can recommend if in the area.

I was born in Winterslow and now work in London and cover the country with my work. I love real ale and cider. I have always loved this pub as my sister was married nearby and the reception was opposite this beautiful pub.
Enough about me but I attended this public house recently and I have to say it was like a time warp! I am not saying that the pub needs to change the decor other than the snooty teenage staff and the the poor real ales. The beers were well kept but the wrong brewery for the area. What's wrong with guest ales? HopBack brewery one of the best things to come out of Salisbury? Get some main stay beers like Fullers London pride, Ringwood best or 49'er and some Doombar from Cornwall!
Food was okay but very pricey for a village pub.
Such a shame. It could be a real goldmine.

My wife and I stayed overnight in June of 2008. The accommodation was in a "cottage" behind the inn, fairly rudimentary but clean and quite acceptable for an overnight stay.
The landlords were a pleasant and charming couple, and the breakfast we were served the next morning was by far the best we had on our 10-day holiday in England and Wales.

I visited his pub last weekend.
It is treading a path between being a restaurant and being a pub, fairly well. But, the beer is Hall and Woodhouse with all that entails.
The place is EXPENSIVE for what it is. The wine list is pretentiously expensive for a country pub.
The table service is of the youngster enthusiastic amateur sort.
I could only afford a main course and one bottle of the overpriced wine. But the food was good with evidence of a chief being there.
It would be good if they could get their prices under control.

Previous members have summed this place up in essence, and living in the area a balanced view on its quality is easy. Food is expensive for very rudimentary pub fare and can easily be found better elsewhere in other outlaying areas around Salisbury, this also counts for the beers. This being more of Hall and Woodhouse issue rather the pub itself, but still not amazingly well kept.

More importantly however as mentioned below is the complete lack of atmosphere. Dated interior rather than adding rustic atmosphere simply makes it feel aged, and regarding ambience its incredibly dull and uninviting. The dated restaurant and music are just a start; on the plus side it does have a well-kept inviting garden. Much better elsewhere however and really does need a new lease of life for both the sake of the food and the pub.

Change of landlord hasn't done this pub any favours. The food is good, but it is expensive for what it is. There were 4 ales on when I visited last (yesterday); I tried the K&B Sussex but it wasn't particularly well-kept. Atmosphere is a bit lacking too, and most of the custom now seems to be groups of Saga-louts, caravaners and famillies rather than serious pub-goers (there was only one local in) especially given its rural location.

Krazzy makes a good point too (below) - it's (paid) to be in the Good Pub Guide, but I notice it's not in GBG (which relies on quality rather than payment).

I wouldn't rule it out for lunch or for dropping in if passing, and the skittle alley makes it a potential venue for group parties, but Beer in the Evening? Maybe not.

it is lovely, the food is nice, one thinks it is not that posh. the elderly are catered for here well, ... unlike the red lion ( i totally disagree with afullpint) i should know i am quite old myself.

The prices are not bad either! xx

I came across this one when checking various venues in the Salisbury area to take my mum to for a meal to celebrate her 90th birthday. The description in the previous post typifies what goes on in second rate foody pubs in England. It always seems to me that chefs - or more probably cooks who try to masquerade under the description of 'chef' - just can't be bothered. Foody pubs in affluent areas have had it all too easy for several years now, but the credit crunch will sort the wheat from the chaff. Buck up your ideas. In the end, I decided on the Red Lion in Salisbury for the birthday dinner - I hope I have made a decent choice!

I was travelling to the silver plough from Weston Super Mare on my way home to London after reading the reviews in the Good Pub Guide..it said lunch was served until 2.30 and we got there at 2.03pm and was starting to ask if we could have lunch and before we could finish she was shaking her head saying no way too late and smiling at us. When we told her that we had travelled 75miles to this place out our way she went and asked the chef wll we could hear wre laughter and when seh came back out said " only salads and Rolls"....whilst still being smug....what made it worse was tha someone had only walked in in front of us and got a table literally 2 seconds but me thinks they were locals....not a place I would go back too....sorry

I'm not posh, but I went there the other day and enjoyed a very nice meal. It took a while to arrive, but what they served was really quite good. The prices weren't as high as I expected, and if the food is good you don't mind paying a bit more. A Hall & Woodhouse pub, so I opted for the Tanglefoot, which is usually a good pint, and was on this occasion. Friendly service and clientele, so all in all an enjoyable evening.

Some of the best meals I've ever had have been eaten here. Not been there in years as I now live in Detroit, USA.
