Hasn't been a Wetherspoons for a year, or so.

Open plan Wetherspoons in the centre of Caversham. It was fairly busy. But staff were handling the volumes with ease. Ales were Loddon Reading Best & Cadogan Gold, Greene King Abbot & Ruddles Best, Three Castles Lightening & Adnams Nils Oscar. Ciders were Westons Wyld Wood & Gwynt y Ddraig Black Dragon. Parking can be difficult around here. But there is a pay and display car park outside the rear exit that is free after 3pm. A better than average 'spoons.

worst spoons in berkshire. especially that willy woofter barman come from monks; right toerag if ever there were one.

Continues to offer far and away the cheapest beer in Caversham (1.99 a pt, at the time of writing, for "normal" beers). Still has all the charm of a dentist's waiting room but hey, at that price we can live with it. A couple of the staff border on ESN but as long as they can pull a pint and don't shortchange me that's OK.

This is my local Wetherspoons and has been said it is smaller and much more friendly than some of the larger Spoons bars around. There are usually 3 guest beers plus the regular Cadogan's Gold (which everyone now knows is actually Loddon Brewery's Ferryman's Gold under another name - but still a good pint of Golden Ale notheless). It serves the standard Wetherspoons menu which although perhaps not Egon Ronay quality is good value for money (where else can you get a breakfast for 3.10?). Good mix of customers - the pub is often used as a meeting place for a drink before going off to one of the many restaurants in Caversham (especially at the weekend). Buses2/22/24 & 800 will take you from Reading town centre but on a good day it is a pleasant walk across Reading Bridge and through the park to the Baron Cadogan - or Brown Cardigan as it is locally known - (via The Fox & hounds and Clifton Arms on your way perhaps?)

Square not not large room which was reasonably comfortable with 'varied' clientele. Very enjoyable Loddon Poppy Appeal - shame no time to drink the Itchen Russian Winter at 5.3%. One other interesting beer plus the usual GK.

Slightly smaller Wethersppons, nicely decorated with a 'mature' crowd on a Friday lunchtime, fairly chav free, decent selection of ales.

Reliable beer (yes, guest beers are IMHO always good). Busy, friendly too. Our preferred local

Smaller than most Wetherspoons. Has a smoking area at the back, but no garden as such. Definitely more of a local than the town centre Wetherspoons, and has a selection of friendly and helpful staff - haven't met a grumpy one actually.

You never know if the guest ales will be any good, but Cadogan's Gold (which I presuem is not sold elsewhere) is a nice golden beer, and permanently available.

The beer is excellent and the staff are always helpful.
Ideal for Caversham
Yeah there are a few chavs about, but so what.
It's trendy to slag off Wetherspoon, but pinters can't argue with well-presented real ale and terrific prices.

Of all the Spoons pubs in and around town, this is my preferred choice.

Feels more like a local than many 'Spoons; on 2 recent vists have been very impressed with the beer (Cotleigh beer gorgeous) and the friendly staff. Relatively quiet on a Friday evening but with regular trade. Would love it as my local.

what is all this cobblers by lord jason? check out his other reviews, they are all promoting the same pub namely the back of beyond. is it a coincidence that the landlord of that pub is also called jason? this kind of thing shouldn't be allowed and i'm surprised wetherspoons tolerate this tactic. he'd be better off spending time at the gym rather than bigging up his own boozer online the fat git!

Let's start off by stating the obvious - it's a Wetherspoons with all that entails. However, it is smaller than most and has a good local trade; the beer is usually very good with Cadogans Gold (which is a Loddon brew by any other name) and 3 guest ales. They also do real cider. Prices are low at 2.05 for the real ales although I understand that any ale of 5% or stronger will be charged at 2.20 which is still pretty good value anyway.

Sometimes atmosphere can be a bit lacking but then it depends on who you go there with. There is almost always a good selection of real ales at reasonable prices. Do try the Cadogan Gold - a beer made for this pub by The Loddon Brewery just three miles away at Dunsden Green.

The food is OK and reasonably priced, currently they have the Curry Club on Thursday - again reasonable may be not the the standard of the local Indian restaurants but this is not an Indian restaurant. I have found the Sunday Club roast dinners to be generally good and very reasonably priced. Tuesday is Steak club - again a good standard.
This being a residential area there is no late licence here - they close at half eleven.

Always (well nearly always) a good selections of real ales available. That's the good news. The place has all the atmosphere of a dentist's waiting room and late at night you wonder "is it going to kick off in a minute?". Food is OK if you want something to fill your belly but 5* (or even 1*) cuisine it ain't.

OK for a pint or two with your mates but you wouldn't use it as your local.

Very friendly service and excellen service from what can be an unpredictable company pub. Visied this pub on quite a few occasions and have never been disappointed.
Has a good turn-around of guest ales - ensuring that they're always in top condition!
Recommended!

Typical of the chain, but still clean and good priced ales. Worth drinking in if your in Caversham but not sure I would go out of my way to drink there.

Reminds me of an Airport Departure Lounge.

If you're the sort of person who considers McDonalds a restaurant, then you probably consider this a pub.

Full of the rich residents of Caversham drinking cheap beer and eating "two for the price of one" microwaved meals, too tight to use their local pub.

You'll never bump into Tim Martin here.

I completely disagree with the previous contributer about the beer. It is some of teh best in town, and also the best value. The food is very good value. It is obviously a chain pub, but it is a pleasabnt enough place for a drink of an evening.
spiky_mikey - 8 Jun 2007 11:55
Not a very nice place- Floor area by the bar sticky with "drink?" and thats at 7.pm. Beer condition poor and very limited range of other drinks. It may be company policy but why are the staff dressed like Viet Cong infantry? The "atmosphere" is unpleasant and the layout reminded me of a works canteen. You need to be drunk before you go in, not to start the evening.

I disagree with some of these. I am a regular here and i find the staff very friendly and chatty and the food is excellent. It takes time to arrive but it is worth the wait. The drinks are also pretty good, however the prices do seem to fluctuate, but this would be the same in all Wetherspoon pubs.
crossie2003 - 19 Apr 2007 21:28
Visited at 5pm on a Sunday, hoping for a quiet meal between the lunchtime crowds and the evening shift, but the first "chef" had clocked off at 4.30 and the expected new shift hadn't shown up, so food was off.
Notices on the tills demanded cash only as the card link was down. The room was untidy with half-finished dinners across tables and only one person serving with some issues about how to work the till...apart from that, it was great.
Gristy - 19 Jun 2006 11:04
Its a wetherspoons pub! The bar staff are not that chatty due to the management not allowing it. Beer wise, once again its a wetherspoons pub, so that means cheap booze but also loads of old people. Often smokey as alot of elder people smoke.
anonymous - 13 Dec 2005 15:26
It's a good pub to go to and especially with their 2 for 5 meal deals. The waiting times for grub can be a bit lengthy and the bar staff aren't exactly chatty but all in all it's okay. There is often a laddish element present so bear that in mind. Could do far worse than starting out here before going somewhere else or for just having a beer and a cheap lunch.
ownedbycats - 17 Nov 2005 04:00
