user reviews of Waggon and Horses, Oldbury

please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.

My wife assures me that I've been in here before. There was something about the place that rang a few bells. But, I'm still not 100% convinced. Nevertheless, this is a lovely old fashioned local in the centre of Oldbury with some fabulous tiling. The front bar was busy with customers who appeared to have had a few. There is then a nice serving corridor connecting the front room with a similar sized room at the rear. No longer owned by Brains, the ales were AJ's Best Bitter & Stuck On Blondes & Sarah Hughes Dark Ruby Mild. To my surprise, they also stocked Weston's Old Rosie. I swerved the cider to go for the Mild. Very enjoyable this was too. The Wetherspoon's (Court of Requests) nextdoor may hold all of the cards when it comes to dining and range of beers. But, the Waggon & Horses wins the prize for more authentic pub hands down. Sure enough, I finished off my Friday visit to the West Midlands at the Court of Requests, which I will request to be added to BITE.

Sadly this place has been closed for the last couple of months or so, it couldn't compete, or didn't want to compete, with The Court of Requests, the two year old 'Spoons next door, big shame really because the Waggons interior is pretty spectacular and the cask ale range was the best for miles around in it's hetday, we often used to use the upstairs function room on our return from the Cheltenham Festival, will it ever reopen? that's for Brains Brewery to answer.

Not a great place, beer was OK but nothing to write home about. Beautiful interior but could use a tiny bit of sprucing up.

Best pub in the area. Range of cask ales plus Brains's smoothflow.

Impressive tiled Victorian building with etched windows.

Food advertised but didn't see any.

Bit quiet for a Saturday night.

Don't go on a Staurday night expecting food - they don't do evening meals on a Saturday night

Excellent pu. Visited last night and sampled several good pints of Enville although others in my party weren't so happy with their pints. Pretty busy and service wasn't great but it was OK.

Classic Black Country boozer that features on CAMRA's NI. Situated practically in the town centre, it's a 5-10 minute walk from Sandwell & Dudley station. Inside there's a bar room and a back lounge which wasn't being used on my visit, but the real attraction is the tiling in the bar room and the corridor that leads to the back. An interesting ceiling and well placed lamps add to the ambience. Had a pint of Shropshire Oracle which was excellent, although the Gold was turned round- pity, my favourite! One more guest beer was on but the presence of other pumps suggested I visited on an off-day. A small TV shows sport and a few locals were watching on my visit. Cheap pub grub is served at lunchtimes. An excellent, properly traditional pub which is worth seeking out.

I take back everything I said about this pub! My parnter and I have been using this pub for the last couple of years, and although the "friendliness" of the staff can vary, it's always been ok.

However my expience a couple of weeks ago has put me off going there again. I'd booked their upstairs room for my hen night, but was asked if it would be ok if we had the downstairs back room as they had double booked. I wasn't told that we'd have to share the room with anyone else, and all 20 or so hens would be crammed round two tables. The landlords were rude and insulting, and our room was taken over by a large group who's stubbenness and arrogance stunned me. I wouldn't ever speak to someone in such an insulting and patronising way.

By the end of the evening the usually smelly toilets were so bad you could probably smell them several streets away.

We made the most of it and stayed, but had we been able to find an alternative I'd have left. Being told to "got f******g somewhere else next time" by the landlord was the last straw. Hopefully this will be my one and only hen night, but in future we shall be taking our business elsewhere.

Its been a godd 5 years since i was last here and nice to see the respected JohnBonser has been in, as well as mtaylor40. The exterior is a superb Victorian example, with Holts etched windows and an old painted sign on the side of the building slowly weathering away.

The interior has two rooms, bar and lounge. The interior is fantasic; ceramic tiles in a turquiose and cream. As JohnBonser says, the lounge is wood panelled. The place does food. Music was subdued and the service friendly. The place was quite busy considereing it was a Thu night, but most were of maturer age.

Beer; Enville White, Rev James, Salopian Oracle, Shropshire Gold Summer Wines Brewery's Helios; with Brains Dark Smooth (MILD) and Smooth (bitter).

I could had sat and drank through the lot, sadly, it was a swift visit. Sheer class and i look forward to returning

I don't understand the review that said they don't care about their regulars. I'm new to the area, and started going here about 18 months ago. Andrew and Mark have always made me feel very welcome, and its by far my favourite pub in the area. The food is good, and Sunday lunch is excellent. We had my mother in laws birthday party there a few weeks ago, and Mark did us a really good spread of proper old style buffet food. Cheese and pineapple on sticks etc. It was lovely and just what she wanted. Its a proper old fashioned boozer, and we need to hang on to them. The only downside is the toilets, but you can't have evyerthing, and the friendly welcome and great beer make up for it.

We were there last Saturday early evening. The place was very quiet. They were not doing food, despite an A-board outside. The landlord explained that there was no demand on a Saturday night.
The beer was OK, but perhaps not brilliant. The place was nearly deserted. The impression I got was that it was a pub dying on its feet. I hope I'm wrong, because once upon a time it was a 'bostin'' place as they say locally.

This pub used to be great, right up untill Acid stopped going in. They say the owner has kept with the old tradition, but he rally hasn't. All it is these days is a place for commuter dinners at lunch time and that is it. There is no care for the regulars who are really the ones responsible for the great reputation this pub HAD to offer ! The tennant has nothing on the previous one, which is why I will never be going back there again. He sold out a lot of regulars for a few mere people, and everytime I drive past now it is just empty, as to the days I remember where it WAS the place to be.

Today I took a group of 'Fircone'Amblers along the
BCN Old Main Line. I had contacted Andy @ W&H in order to arrange a lunch stop.I mobiled him when about ten minutes away, and let him know I had around a dozen members in tow.Andy, and his staff, made us very welcome and the food was very much ok to all our members. They all agreed that they would not hesitate
to recommend The Waggon and Horses to all.

Thanks John - this pub seems to be off the radar, but it's a real gem. However, on 3 previous visits it's been relatively quiet on a Sat night, a victim of location. This is a gorgeous looking pub, with a beer range and quality that wold be 95% of London Beer Guide pubs to shame.

Well, it looks like the John Bonser roadshow is the first to reach this pub !
It's a popular town centre local, noted for its traditional interior which includes tiled walls and etched windows with the Holt Brewery motif. There is a public bar, principally used by locals and a quieter saloon / lounge bar which features wood pannelling and old bell pushes. The pub features in the CAMRA National Inventory of Historic Pub Interiors. A surprisingly varied food menu is on offer at lunchtimes at very fair prices. As regards beer, it has approx 5 real ales, mainly from local micros. Try the Enville white if it's on as it seems harder to find than other local beers. Public transport is quite frequent ( Sandwell and Dudley B R is not far away and there is also a good bus service ). For drivers, Junction 2 of the M 5 is only a mile or so away. This pub is well worth seeking out if in the vicinity
