visited on a Sunday night and barely a soul in there. Two TV screens showing the same football match.

Nothing wrong with the place and seems OK....three beers on tap at time of visit Doom, and two Hobgoblins....I had the amber which was in good condition.

According to the Good Beer Guide this pub opens at 11 - but there must have been 60 or 70 customers when I arrived at twenty past on Saturday. Busy town-centre bar with a good atmosphere, obviously popular with the locals who seemed to be partial to coffee and chips for breakfast. Almost a full range of Adnams' ales available, with London Pride as a guest, but my pint of Southwold bitter although drinkable could have been in better condition.

You can get an idea of what this place must have looked like inside in years gone by and it wouldn't take much to put it back to something like its original layout (a few screens etc to make snugs and small rooms for example). It was very cosy when we went but does not really live up to Good Beer Guide standards and my opinion. The Adnams was very average and the other beer was London Pride which is a shame considering the number of local micro-breweries in the county. Service was brusk and it is annoying when a barperson serves you whilst chatting away to his/her mates at the same time. I would probably goo back again just to verify my views or hopefully have them changed!

Scruffhouse pub on the marketplace with well worn seating/flooring/staff/clientelle. Suffered a barely drinkable pint of Adnams and find it quite hard to believe that this pub is in the GBG. It does serve a number of ales - badly.

Went to Mannings today. Ordered two pints of fosters for 6.30 which were fine, but the barmaid had to be retrieved from the garden as she was smoking, no sign of hands washed which isn't particularly nice, and when I asked for two pints, she replied "is that it?" as if I should have been ordering more than two drinks for two people. So customer service was below average. Tables were sticky and the place looked as though it just needed a good clean. Ordered the steak pie and my partner had the bacon cheese burger. The food arrived in a timely fashion, and I was bit disappointed to see that there was no gravy with my pie, chips & peas. The peas.... Ah slightly on the brown shade of the green spectrum, which given that birds eye do excellent frozen peas is no excuse for using 'cheap' peas. Imagine my horror when I open the "steak" pie to find some over cooked dried out stewing steak from a can. The chips were decent, the burger slightly too much cheese, but otherwise ok. For a prominent location I can't help but think the management are missing a trick here. A decent steak pie should be the backbone of decent real pub. I feel cheated out of the best part of 20 and will not be going back.

very good beer, so so service pleasant enough

Great place next to the market. Adnams, Landlord and Pride on the bar. Very good food offering. Good service. Mural on the wall outside in the back makes the smoking area look like a bar.

Another one of our favourite pubs in Ipswich, probably our favourite truth be known. The food is good and well priced (i.e. cheap), the beers and ciders are good. We are spoilt for choice with there being Aspall's, Kronenbourg and Stella on draft as well as some good real ales. Marion is great fun as is her son Mark. It's a great place to spend a few hours - people watching (Corn Hill). It's got a great atmosphere with a good choice of places to sit (inside and out). It's worth paying a little bit extra for a pint for this atmosphere. It is a million times more atmospheric than it's neighbouring waterhole with initials TGL.

Lovely pub. Never busy but I suppose that is because it is so over priced! Nice food in the day time. Nice and cosy at Christmas time.
hungrysi - 4 Jun 2009 17:07
Popped in this week and five ales on: Adnams Broadside and Bitter, London Pride, Tim Taylor's Landlord and Hook Norton Bitter (which went down very well). One of the more expensive pubs in town but beer quality is good.
Rod_Hariga - 15 Feb 2009 23:43
Nice little pub in the town centre. Good range of beer, if a bit predicable. It is expensive considering spoons is next door. Good for people watching out the window. 7/10.
tommyn11685 - 15 Feb 2009 12:28
Popped in on a Saturday evening and reasnably busy without being unfortably so. Four of us managed to get a table and enjoyed a few beers. Adnams, Woodfordes and Fullers available and all well kept. It is the higher end of the price scale in the town though.
Rod_Hariga - 11 Jan 2009 10:33
I know Mannings much much much more than "greenarrow" because I go there everyday and some of the staff are my friends.
And also I am a handyman of the pub.
There is no drug problems at the pub at all.

Everyone, Mannings is a marvellous pub and if you doubt about it please go there to check it by yourself.

The comment from "greenarrow" is completely untrue.

CJKOBY - 11 Aug 2008 15:23
A reasonable range of ale (usually at least three available) and normally well kept - unfortunately it's very expensive here though. Has a lovely walled in beer garden out the back (can be a bit of a sun trap). Serves food of the bar snacks and pub grub variety.
Rod_Hariga - 5 Jul 2008 21:01
This pub is for decent, gentle, wealthy people only.
I am enjoying this pub's marvellous atmosphere.
No yobs in this nice pub.

Needles to say, all the staff are fantastic.

How comes CJKOBY has been allowed 3 reviews of this pub, when others have been deleted?

"Decent & Gentle" are lovely old fashioned words, that neither describe or ascribe to this town centre pub. "Wealthy" is certainly something you need to be, to afford the extortionate prices.

I have been a regular visitor of this pub for 5 years now, and also worked there, and am quite upset to read these horrid reviews of Mannings, a pub I have grown very fond of. I loved working there, the staff are smashing and I have become and remained good friends with a number of them. Also I am offended with the 'grumpy staff' comments, as I always tried to be friendly and welcoming to EVERYONE, including potentially rude customers. I have always found the atmosphere to be cosy and welcoming, and I say well done to the staff who remain there. You'll be seeing more of me!
(But take no notice of these comments as I am a 'new site visitor' and therefore my opinions apparently don't count)

Oh dear, this has now taken over from The Greyhound as the most expensive pint of real ale in Ipswich. This is usually a good meeting place where I meet a mate I used to work with. Today however I could not believe it when I was told that it would be 6.00 for two pints of Woodfordes Wherry. This is usually available for about 2.50 or under in other pubs, excluding Adnams owned pubs which this pub isn't. I wonder who does own this pub I have nether found out. I guess it is owned by a pub co as opposed to be a free house. I am not naive and I am aware that breweries are putting their barrel prices up with the increasing cost of hops and barley.

I am afraid this is far too much at the moment and will be finding an equally nice drinking pint much cheaper elsewhere. If a 1.00 a round saving on two pints can easily be achieved I will be taking it in future.

It's a shame as we have been coming here once a week for some years now. I will miss the quick service on the food and the nice view over the square. I will miss the nice lady from the kitchen who delivers the food but I will not miss the grumpy bar staff.
Love_good_ale - 6 Mar 2008 19:13
this 'slanging match' was actually started when you came to the pub, got hammered, and proceeded to abuse the staff. manning does not allow ANYONE to act like this in the pub especially petty old men like you. and i think all of these lies you are spreading about being abused in private messages and lies about having your personal property vandalised is completly out of order. i think people can see who is the complete idiot in all this. my opinion is that you should get yourself a life and stop this stupidity. because its very childish.
northern_monkey - 6 Mar 2008 13:25
I have been a regular of this pub for several years. I have not had any bad experience by the staff in there.
It has nice atmosphere and the customers, both locals and visors, are nice too though there is few exception.

Beautifully kept property, really full of character. Warm welcome from the friendly staff, excellent choice of ales served perfect.

Nuff said! We'll be back.

i have spent many years at this well located pub on the historical cornhill. i highly recommend trying the guest ales they have. (usually wherry and timothy taylors) i can not see at all where this macca is coming from but i suppose everyone has their opinion wether wrong or right. as far as i have seen this place seems to be very well run with helpful and friendly staff. well worth a visit. 9/10

Mannings is the BEST pub in Ipswich town centre. Atmosphere is fantastic! The staff are MARVELLOUS!!
Only the decent people can enjoy this excellent pub!!
CJKOBY - 29 Feb 2008 00:45
i moved to this area about a year ago and have been nothing but welcomed by the staff in this pub that i would now consider my local. it is homely and traditional with family feel were well behaved children are welcomed. the outdoor seating area is impeccably kept an overall good time had by all who frequent this establishment! good job all keep up the good work!!!!
dollyxox - 27 Feb 2008 20:15
Was encouraged by Northern Monkeys latest review to give this pub another chance.
Unfortunately, my colleagues and I found this to be as poor as it was on our last visit before Christmas 07.
The atmosphere is awful, the bar staff are nothing other than rude and inept, the beer is still over-priced and poorly kept.
Unless you are desperate or a buffoon, I would recommend that you stay well clear of this poorly managed establishment.
macca56 - 22 Feb 2008 22:42
this is certainly the best pub in ipswich town centre. great vibe about the place. great great choice of well kept real ales, always atleast three real ales, with a geust ale on rotation. the food is fast, very reasonably priced, and all in all very nice pub grub. the staff are very knowledgeable about their products. also the sunday roast is one of the best i've tasted. also i have to say that the last few bad comments are probably down to rude cantankerous people. fantastic pub well worth a visit! 10/10
northern_monkey - 19 Feb 2008 14:44
Used to visit this pub often until the beer became very expensive compared against more reasonable places with a nicer atmosphere very close by.

Not a great environment to socialise in, the music doesnt suit the pub (e.g. christmas songs all through November then back to usual 80's stuff in December).

The bar staff are very unknowledgeable on their drinks and one served me a pint before telling his co-worker "that beer is off and I'm taking it off sale", leaving me with a dodgy pint having just paid over the odds.

I think my rating shows that I won't be going again this year.

realaletales - 19 Jan 2008 13:30
This is traditional sort of pub handy for the market. The choice of real ales was limited but at least the beer arrived in good condition. I did, however, find the background music very irritating and will not be visiting again unless they turn it down or off.

Only decent pub remaining in Ipswich town centre, but is suffering as a result of the smoking ban. On a Friday or Saturday night the little beer garden out the back is crowded whilst the pub itself is pretty empty. The winter weather may well cause problems. Beers are good if a little overpriced, and it seems insane that the pub continues to call last orders at 11, sweeping away all the customers in the beer garden who might well have have bought another round or two if allowed to stay. I constantly despait over the way pubs put their own convenience over that of their potential customers, with the result that they end up out of business
edchambers - 18 Sep 2007 21:42
A nice traditional pub in the centre of town to have a good beer. Usually just three ales (Adnams Best & Broadside & one guest). This is not an Adnams pub but the prices do seem very Adnams'ish. The food is good and arrives very quickly.
If you get a table in the window it's a good place to people watch. Seating outside front and the courtyard at the rear.
Love_good_ale - 9 Sep 2007 22:54
nice pint of summer lightning was had, little pricey mind due, 7/10
fat_beer_badger - 16 Jul 2007 14:41
Nice bar, good looking woody interior, 4/5 ales inc Adnams(x2), Summer Lightning, Pride, those sampled in very good shape. Friendly barman mentioned a couple of others they get in on rotation. Good all round.
trainman - 23 Apr 2007 08:38
A nice relaxed place with decent ales. Food is ok, I would recommend their club sandwich if you're hungry. It is one of the most expensive places in town, although this probably goes some way in keeping the clientele respectable.
Plums - 18 Sep 2006 14:15
This is a fine traditional public house. It has a lovely beer garden at the back of the property, and you are bound to fall in love with the always friendly and helpful staff.
Isobel4 - 15 Aug 2006 20:43
This pub used to be one of the best in Ipswich. It's quite small and nice and murky. Reasonable selection of beers and beer garden. The food is ok and well priced. The only problem is that over the last couple of years the beers seem to go up by about 10p a month. It's expensive now.
willd - 20 May 2005 12:17
Nice pub, very cental location at what is possibly the oldest public square of any British town. A couple of real ales.
Sigmund - 7 Feb 2005 21:42
Nice pub in the town centre. Usually at least one real ale on pump.
