I come here mainly to see bands as its more of a venue then pub. Prices are quite cheap, good drinks, good staff and a good night out.

Not sure whether anyone actually uses this place just as a pub, but as a venue to watch bands play or as a disco/club it is not without its merits. As per usual with this type of place, don't expect much in the way of colour - everything is pretty much black or shiny metallic in here. The prices for drinks aren't too bad and there is a reasonable amount of choice. Service at the bar is fairly quick and polite and the quality passes muster (no real ales though as you have probably come to expect from London live music venues and clubs). Decent sized stage and dancefloor area for watching live music or dancing to whatever the DJ plays. A slightly more mellow little area to the rear where the bands sell merch and there are a few tables and stools to rest your feet at. There seems to be a nicer seating area upstairs with padded bench style seating but that was shut when I visited.
If they are having a club night that takes your fancy or there is a band you like playing here, I would heartily recommend visiting, if there's nothing on you'd probably be better off trying a "proper" pub instead and Camden has plenty to choose from.

I remember using this place in my clubbing days and it was ok, but nothing to write home about. Now it is more of a dark music venue with strange opening times and odd ball clientele.

Not my cup of tea, but each to their own.

A curious place indeed. We visited after heading back to the Smoke after a match between Reading and West Brom and a visit to the other branch of the chain in the Berkshire town. Has evolved beyond the original Turtle goth blueprint to become ever so slightly clubby. An air of fetish hung heavy but I'm not going to criticize a place that has individuality on this level.

this is potentially the worst pub in london. the toilets are vile, locks broken and no loo paper. the staff all need a good wash and their hair is matted. they have no idea how to work the bar. i was there under duress tonight and will never go back. in the short time i was there one barman was so incredibly to my friend and I when we asked to be served, instead of being ignored, he started to berate us for asking for service.... "am i standing around doing nothing, do you me standing still?" no was our answer but can we please be next, you have served 3 others ahead of us when we were here first. he couldn't see the sense in our request so went into an avalanche of abuse. nice man hey? use your time wisely and never go here.

I go to a club here once a month and I like the place.

One complaint would be the bar staff, they have no idea when it comes to knowing which customers is next (a crucial trait all bar staff need). On many occassion I have waited and seen people served who have just got to the bar. And no I don't stand there like a numpty, I do everything in my power to get myself noticed over the din of the music but the staff are just clueless.

I like this pub, it plays good alternative music and I like the decor. Nice and dark! Rock on!

Different! The music is loud! They serve McEwan's lager on draught. Nice one!

Good pub, been putting on some class gigs recently, more underground death metal! wheey. Friendly bar staff and good nite out when gig on.
Lew_Man - 7 Jul 2006 13:56
promoted a gig there but they decided to cancel the gig without telling me leaving me to send two hundred people and six bands home. it's a dump and full of money hungry ba**a*ds
justiceleague - 21 Jun 2006 14:59
Went tonite to see a couple of mates bands to find the management had cancelled their gig without notice to show football instead. Bands were furious coz they'd lost out bigtime with vanhire and stuff. Avoid!

I dont like altertnative venues but i would go here, the tackiness works, love the poles and the staff playing poker
tash_xx - 24 Apr 2006 18:09
I came hear to see a gig once. The bands where very good, and it seemed like a pretty good music venue. I wouldn't come hear for any other reason though.

uh...i saw a good band there once - other than that, nothing going for it. Plastic looking place with rubbishy beers served like they are in most clubs.

The puprle Turtle is just a bloodcurdlingly rock pub! It's a camden institution, with huge betty page pictures, ornate wallpaper and chandeliers... Perfect staple for the fetish loving metalhead, but also providing a wider range of music (no pop!!!!). It's also a good gig venue, I went to see a band called Mallory Knox the other day who were brilliant! It's a shame there are not that many other pubs in london with this kind of dark subversive character! Shame drinks arent cheaper, most rockers are skint!

The Goths have all but gone from here now, music has got more trendy during the week, and hard dance at weekends, I love this bar

wicked on a saturday night

goth/industrial??? Not quite mate... tends to be hard trance/hard house/techno/DnB and is more like a club then a pub when it gets going!
Grob - 18 Oct 2003 13:26
It's a goth/industrial bar - you'll find goth, industrial, metal or 80s music playing depending what day you are there.

Obviously, it's not for everyone. That's the whole point of bars which attract certain types of people - they don't WANT everyone! So if goth and industrial isn't your thing, don't come.

If it IS your thing, you'll probably enjoy the purple turtle on the ceiling, the music, the dance space, the quieter corners, and the cocktails in jugs.

Jeremy Drener - 6 May 2003 20:02
Excellent place. Great atmosphere and music, fantastic warm-up for a club, stays open late. Just don't spoil your evening by going in the Camden Palace over the road afterwards.
Sickboy - 28 Apr 2003 22:26
