I needed somewhere to eat late at night. So this place suited me fine at 9pm, as I just caught last orders for food. It's a large building, set right on the Quayside with a good view of the Tyne. Popular with a younger crowd. But 2 ales were being served - Marstons EPA & Wychwood Hobgoblin. My Hobgoblin and meal were just what the doctor ordered. But not normally my kind of establishment.

Poor pints, poor selection, full of the 'crowd' Can't think of a good thing to say really.

My goodness..beautiful view...BUT....for the evening, if your not a size 6 -8 lady, (lightely chosen word lol) with skirts non exsistant, and your under 25...give this place a miss.....I have been a dancer, been in clubs all over the world..but never ever have I seen a place that is COMPLETELY AND UTTERLY full of such....as mentioned below..look at me tossers lol. If your a guy wantng to pull a typical teen in a short skirt have fun...but for the ladies, with class and for the men who have lovely ladies this place is not for you.....have fun x

I wouldn't normally touch a Pitcher & Piano with a bargepole, but lunch had been arranged here and finding an alternative was not really an option. The food was better than I was expecting (especially given that we were quite a large party), and I suppose that the keg Pedigree was just about OK on an unusually warm September day. However, this place does have a fantastic location on the Quayside opposite the iconic Baltic Mill and Sage on the Gateshead bank of the Tyne. The organiser also ensured that we got there early to see the regular midday opening of the dramatic millenium footbridge. I shouldn't really rate this higher than a '4', but it would be churlish not to give it another point or two just for being where it is.

Never had any time for this place. Ok good location but thats about it. Feels really dated now too, stinks of the 90s. Expensive and full of 'look at me' tossers!

Under normal circumstances I would rather chew a second hand butt-plug off Ebay than visit a bar like the Pitcher and Piano: - overpriced drinks, surly staff with no sense of who to serve next, or believing that it is more important to attend to napkin folding when a substantial queue is forming at the bar. My clasic comedy moment here was the barperson who tried to serve me and a guy next to me both at the same time and mixed up the drinks and the change. Why bother? If you want to sit down at a table be prepared to clear the empty glasses and coffee cups yourself - the barstaff are not going to bother. First chair I sat in nearly dumped me on the Quayside due to its broken back. So what has it got going for it? On a summers day sitting outside is a remarkable experience -watch the world go by against the amazing and fantastic backdrop of Sage/Baltic and those fabulous bridges.

Tip for summer 2008 - be there early on a Saturday morning - they are tilting the Millenium Bridge at 12 noon every Saturday and it is spitting distance from the Pee and Poor er I mean Pitcher and Piano. Well worth a visit.

I want to send out a heartfelt thank-you to the Pitcher and Piano team from Newcastle for being so spontaneously accommodating last Friday night. The afternoon began with a few quiet Friday afternoon drinks to wind down after a tough week at the office (birthday girl not present). It was not long after that our friend joined us who happened to be celebrating her 30th birthday. We were unaware of this immediately, but soon the news was out and an amazing night was to ensue. We let the bar staff know of this and they were so helpful and generous. They even allocated us an area, table service and all, and we were treated to a VIP-like evening. The cocktails we indulged in were works of art and I struggle to compare them to anything I have experienced in the past. It was one night to remember and a venue I will most definitely frequent in the future for any occasion. Cheers!

This place is awful.Very bland, very sterile and shallow, irritating clientele. Also takes a seemingly endless amount of time to get a bloody drink.

Smart location near the Millennium Bridge and impressive view over the River Tyne. Yet I thought this was probably the most pompous and pretentious bar I visited in Newcastle. Boring and bland. It also took a while to get served relatively early on a Friday night. When me and my mates next visit the Quayside (probably when Charlton play Newcastle over the weekend 28 October 2006) we won't start here again. There are much livelier and less pretentious bars. Certainly not the place to start searching for Newcastle H-Files, unless someone in the group really wants to see the striking view over the river while having a beer!

When this opened I remember we thought it was the height of sophistication - clearly from the last review the people he describes still think it is! Although I must say I can't imagine a "metrosexual" would get very far in Newcastle...

Location, location, location. About all this place has going for it, as the food is massively variable in quality and the drinks are a little pricey. Crowd is a mix of spray-tanned metrosexual locals and well-heeled chinless students so expect a few idiots and some inane prattle. Staff also vary wildly. Have succumbed to peer pressure and spent a few hours on the admittedly comfy leather sofas, as many people still swear by the place. My girlfriend was once given a stone cold fishcake, and that's not a euphemism. The building itself is starting to look a little tired and typifies the once aspirational but now slightly tired and faded air about the quayside. be imaginative and find somewhere interesting to spend your time and money.

EXPENSIVE as delboy would say full of yuppies

Everything a pub shouldn't be, but unfortunately so many are!
Rude staff who serve good looking girls first(tip, stand next to a good looking girl and when she gets her change handed to her, order your drink).
ericmarco - 30 Dec 2005 15:21
Well you know what you're going to get in a P&P, expensive burgers and beer, leather armchairs, women in their 20/30's looking for romanace. It's Ok but with hundreds of pubs to choose from in Newcastle you can choose plenty of better venues. It's somewhere you'd only take your mum for a bite to eat on a Sunday

As greenhouses go, this is a big one on the north bank of the Tyne by the Millennium bridge. Good all round views. I called at lunchtime mid April 05 and noted you can eat a burger costing 7+ in an atmosphere of fag smoke that gripped you by the throat as you went in. For most glasshouses ,ventilation is essential but this one was poor. The place is open all day and busy. Its saving grace was its pleasant and polite staff. Not a place I would visit again.

I went for the first time last summer before the masters at work set at Foundation. It is one of the nicest pubs in Newcastle I have been to and quite cheap considering the place. Its full of "trendies" but no one bats an eyelid when you walk in. I payed 5 for a double vodka redbull and about for a glass of wine which is the going rate. Its definitly one on my route.

Awful, awful, awful.Expensive, slow bar staff, overcrowded.Comic momemt came though when my mate tried to play the dummy piano. If its a summers night then you can stand outside and enjoy the impressive view of the bridge over the tyne.

Having been a regular hear for 3 years I cannot think of many better venues. A little walk from the centre but worth it. Great drinks, great staff and lovely lovely customers. And the view, unbelievable best in town!

I came up from Cambridge in March 2003 and met up with loads of friends up in Pitcher and Piano. Great place - romantic with beautiful views of the city and river. Magical evening when magical things happen. Met a really handsome dark haired man there with his friends. We said hello to eachother in passing - I wanted to talk more - then my friends moved on to another place. Wish I'd talked to him - apparently he returned to thePitcher and Piano the following weekend to see if I was there. Would love to hear from him. I am the small blonde girl he saw that night- he might remember me. Don't know his name...

up from Darlo /visited on monday afternoon after visit to Baltic .2 bottles of Becks beer and a small glass white wine cost 9.10/ rip off / no drinks price list anywhere to be seen/ cynical exploitation/ obvious why no price lists/ don't prices have to be displayed

Nice locationa and views. I agree, a little pretentious, but good service.
Lily Hunter - 13 Aug 2004 19:05
I only spent one evening in NC - and that is enough to last me a life time ! I guess by Newcastle standards P and P is probably the best - but by Cape Town standards ... I am afraid dissapointing and pretentious.
Burgert - 3 Jun 2004 15:22
Comming from Cape Town, South Africa, I find Pitcher and Piano in Newcastle, a bit on the pretentious side... But nice view by Newcastle standards.
Burgert Blom - [email protected] - 19 May 2004 13:39
Putting aside the slight chippiness of the other reviews, this is definitely on the upscale of Newcastle nightlife. It is stylish and its location would be envied by virtually any city-centre bar in England.
Matt - 12 Jan 2004 13:52
A place built with the new money that is now dominating the quayside of Newcastle. This bar caters for those that have access to, or come from a background of money. The security is discrete but there all the same, those that dont quite fit the bill will quickly find themselves waiting an awfully long time to be served by the otherwise attentive barstaff. If they should make their feelings known, they will soon find themselves escorted outside by the security staff.

Food is excellent, quickly served and value for money, the catering staff tend to be of the "student paying their way" variety but still tend to be attentive and polite. All in all an excellent bar with occasional live (piano) music.
