A great comedy night is to be had here monthly on a Sunday night in the rear outbuilding. As for the pub, it's a place that could could be better. I don't know who taught the bar-people how to pull a pint, but they've all obviously been taught it - wrongly. It's not a competition to get the glass filled as quickly as possible! That said, the prices are pretty good and the beers are well kept. Might pop in when passing for a pint when I'm not going to the comedy night to reevaluate.

Probably Newport Pagnell's best pub and the ales would be the main reason although pictures depicting military actions from the First World War era are also a nice touch - a fabulous poster shop across the road has perhaps been plundered? A good bevy of locals were quaffing although the distaff fraternity were not well represented.

A traditional high-street pub in the heart of Newport Pagnell, and is, I believe, family owned which makes a nice change from the ubiquitous PubCo chains.

Inside it's not quite as big as you might expect it to be from at the outside, but is nonetheless still a reasonable size. Light wood panelling covers the lower part of the walls and there are numerous pictures dotted around up above, many of old soldiers in various different uniforms. To the left is a smallish room which might be described as the public bar, having a darts board, plasma and a large alloy wheel (an Aston Martin one presumably, given the pub's close proximity to the original factory) although there are still a couple tables and chairs.

This is separated from the main pub area by a free standing, brick chimney breast. The decor here is much the same, and it continues around the bar counter in an L-shape. A glass display case houses a full size soldier's uniform as well as various other military paraphernalia. There is a small courtyard with a couple of benches at the rear of the pub. Other than that it was difficult to really get a feel for the place as it was absolutely rammed on a recent Wednesday evening visit due to the popularity of their quiz night.

Beers on tap were Bank's Bitter, Great Oakley Gobble, GK IPA and Pedigree Diamond. The solitary cider was the splendid Thatcher's Gold, which makes a pleasant change from the Strongbow that seems to be served up in most other pubs around these parts.

Marstons pub that enjoys a nice location at the centre of Newport Pagnell nextdoor to a sweet shop and opposite a very tempting chip shop. We entered from the rear and through an old corridor. The first thing that hits you is the smell of dogs. No sign of any canine creatures during our visit. But the smell is all too apparent when you enter. Beers were Batemans Victory Ale, Wychwood Hobgoblin, Marstons Pedigree & Banks's Bitter. Locals were indulging in a meat raffle. Popular pub that seemed to be Newport Pagnell's best option. Nice pub. Shame about the smell.

Pleasant and popular High Street local full with a cross section of ages and outlooks. Four aleas on - of which I treid the Jennings 'Soggy Bottom'. Nice enough pint ina smalltownthat is close to but still seperate from MK.

Advertises four ales, so was expecting a bog standard choice when I visited for the first time last night. Not at all - two Ringwood beers, including their Huffkin autumn ale, a Northamptonshire beer of which I forget the name and another decent offering. Memory is a bit hazy. Decent prices, though.
Busy on a Saturday night both inside and out and a band playing in a room out the back. Open until midnight too.

Whilst on a training course I popped in for a pint of ale and was pleasantly surprised, a very cozy pup, good choice of ale. felt very comfortable and relaxed

Been drinking here for a few years, mostly Fri or Sat evenings on a fortnightly basis.

Good Points: Good Beer, Good Bands, Friendly staff, comfy surroundings.

Bad Points: Bit of a 'clique' - locals will be served before you. Been there lately and beer selection is limited. Lately only Pedigree available on a Sat night.

Usually end up in the Bull, where the beer selection is better (normally 4 on offer). Bull would be a better candidate for the Good Beer Guide, but I don't think CAMRA politics would allow that.

Nice place, home of CAMRA locally...lots of memorablia, sad thing does not do food. Staff very nice, Adam and his wife (Spanish) good hosts....although more blokes prefer their daughter Mollie! Good old fashioned pub right in the heart of our little quiet town! (Except weekends when everyone else visits!)

Adam now taking a back seat and rarely seen -leaving it to Daughter Molly and Partner Paul,Ale's always good -Bank's at 2.20 is the best value in the area. Bar staff excellent, nice friendly pub (Donna run's Quiz Night on Tuesday's).
Music Venue at rear with Open Mic night on Thursday's ? Recent Pink Floyd Tribute Band sold out. Early May Bank Holiday 4 Day Beer Festival offering 12 Real Ales and Live Music.

I agree...'nice pub, shame about the landlord'..
pubgeezer - 5 Jan 2009 21:46
Adam may be a little idiosyncratic but this is a splendid little pub - easily the best in Newport

I've just had a night out at this pub.... normally it's quite friendly..Adam ( the landlord ) however, took exception to me asking to sample one of his ales before I bought it ( this was at the barman's request that I 'try before I buy )... Adam accused me of being a 'free loader'... I am not normally a beer drinker.. in fact, if the landlord had done his homework on me at all... I was mostly responsable for working my way through his malts on a good night ( 'without' tasting them beforehand ) ..as a regular Sunday night drinker, I must have spent a good few hundred quid there on scotch... but not anymore...he might have all the 'traditional trappings' of a friendly pub... but if the loud mouthed Landlord do'nt like ya'... your history... I think I'll just wait until there's new management there before I go there again... hopefully that wo'nt be too long....

This pub is shocking, and has possibly the most rudest bar maid I have EVER come across in my life. Its full of old men aswell, so I suggest anyone who is up for a GOOD time avoids this place, at ALL costs!

Cracking High street beer drinkers' pub. As has been said, landlord Adam - a fine and forthright English character himself - is an enthusiastic CAMRA member and it shows in the splendid and varied beer range (Banks's beer at a very good price for this area is a reliable constant amongst them). No food or frills just good ale in convivial surroundings.

Military memorabilia and prints, and Army band music on the juke box, add character to one of the best pubs in the area and a well-deserved local CAMRA Pub of the Year a year or two back.

The quintessentially English atmosphere of the pub are complimented by the fact that the landlord's good lady is Spanish and Flemish is also apparently spoken by bar staff. They'll change US dollars and euroes too!

The landlord quite rightly insists on basic standards of civility from customers, including taking your hat off when entering!

Lovely little pub great real ale a friendly talkative landlord and barmaid, we need more pubs like this.
Note:- I thought it was polite to remove your hat on entering a room, but then that would require manners.
plodge - 26 Apr 2006 15:13
A nice looking pub in the centre of Newport Pagnell. However, the landlord seems to object to hats being worn in his precious little drinking-hole. This is a recent phenomenon and seems to be spreading. Men have always worn hats in pubs and I cannot for the life of me understand why certain landlords feel obliged to make an issue out of it. What are they afraid might happen if some customers wear hats? It's complete and utter nonsense and frankly people of the likes of the proprietor of this pub really ought to grow up. I won't be using The Cnnon again and will tell everyone I know just how objectionable the staff are.

Excellent pub for the beer drinker. Adam, the landlord, is a member of the local CAMRA branch, and the pub has been in the Good Beer Guide for 10 years running through to 2006. Four real ales on pump, frequently changed, and Adam's skilled cellar-keeping ensures that you will not be disappointed.

Note: the Cannon does not serve food (apart from the usual crisps, nuts, etc.), so don't expect a gastropub experience - this is a good, old-fashioned no-frills English pub.

Here I am again comments well like the Bull I used the Canon for many a year, remember Geoff Goodwin as landlord or Graham Eccles ?

Eccles I see has got the florist shop acroo the road, I married one of the barmaids Susan Bunker as she was then not the best move for either of us sad to say. Remember the barman who had an I think Persian girfriend, can't recall ther names but the barman used to manage the Weathereds T.V.rental and sales shop opposite Lloyds bank then.

Live in Bangkok Thailand these days and have done for about 12 to 13 years now, any memories contact me, love to hear from you

Can't go wrong. Interior full of interesting stuff. Always enjoyed my visits.
lupus - 24 May 2005 13:52
The only decent pub in Newport. Good beer, reasonable prices and great atmosphere created by the erudite and loquacious landlord, whose selections on the better than average juke box never fail to hit the right note. The new barmaid, Donna keeps abreast of drinkers requirements.
