I've popped into this pub on a number of occasions and always found the management and staff very friendly. They serve a wide range of real ales including 1 or 2 racked behind the bar. Despite their annoying practice of spending 10 min's cleaning the pipe every time a barrel is changed, the beer is never that good. Maybe they should stock fewer beers and clean the pipes properly once a week!

Gem of a pub in a small town unfortunately dominated by Fullers (who took over Gales), and Youngs pubs.
Always a good range - usually Directors, Tribute, Youngs Special, Bombadier and more recently Summer Lightning - racked on the back wall.
Good pub food, known for its sausages but spanning a wide range. Courtyard garden at the back is a real sun-trap.

Fantastic find a real gem .. famous for sausages, great for real ales and a welcoming atmosphere. Went for a Sunday roast which they do all day (well until about 6pm I think) will definitely be going back again soon!

We went a couple of weeks ago and were told the pub was under new management. The Youngs beer was in excellent condition and the food (not just the sausages) was reported first class by everyone (there were 12 of us). Child and dog friendly, there is more room inside than it looks and it still has much of its 17th century charm. We had an excellent time and would highly recommend it. Will be even better once the summer kicks in

Went here Saturday 12th March 2011 for a pre-booked celebration meal with a group of 15. Despite being a "speciality sausage" pub two of the speciality sausages, ordered at least a week previously , were not on the menu as their supplier had not delivered!

Service, when it finally happened, was both slow and appalling with an interminable wait after the starter course. The food was lacklustre and in some cases would appear to have been sat on the hotplate for some time before being served lukewarm.

Not a place I would consider going back to again.

Delightful Young's tenancy. Small, but with lots of characture - and no 'pub designer' has ever been near the place. Friendly, chatty barman serving a well kept pint for less than 3. Mixed, but not cliqy customers - I'll be back! Isambard.

Fantastic lunchtime venue. Good ales and great English (Sussex) sausages, a winning mix especially when served by such friendly staff. Plus, in winter, the lovely pong of a wood fire.

Great for meals, great for a drink or three, and at all times of the year too. The sausage menus are amazing, and it had a really local feel.

"A PROPER OLD ENGLISH PUB" This is a great little pub with a nice cosy friendly atmosphere and so much better since the smoking ban, before you have a go, yes I do smoke! We booked an evening meal here and it was well worth every penny and more. Plenty of drinks to choose from as well, especially glad to see my favourite "Bombardier". Cant wait to go back.

A gem, great ale and food, would have rated 9 but prices a bit steep

This is everything a pub should be!! welcoming, fab ale, good staff and a feeling that you stepped back in time. (shame the beer wasn't a few pence a pint though. Realise that thats down to inflation not someone profitiering) with a lovely separate resturant serving really tasty food !!!

This pub is friendly and welcoming - Just how an English pub should be. We tried a new menu last week (they still do the sausages as well) and it was excellent!! Well worth a visit, easily the best pub in the locality.

The range of sausages on offer alone make this pub worth a look. The small walled garden is lovely in the summer and the bar is cosy in the winter, although don't count on getting a seat in the bar as there aren't that many.

This use to be a great pub until youngs brought it, and turned it into an expensive pub, still known for the sausages, shame the beer has gone down hill

This is what might have been described once upon a time as a 'spit & sawdust' pub. It is located on the main road just inside the West Sussex/Hampshire border. As you open the door off the street you step right into the single bar and yes there is sawdust on the floor. It is friendly, there will be a log fire going in the winter, the beer is good and the sausages are to die for. The pub is known for the quality of its sausages. And don't come in asking for obscure cocktails!

This pub has all the makings of a lovely small town pub, you walk in the door and there is a lounge bar and saloon bar. It has that oldy worldy feel to it almost like you have drifted back to the days when the oyster catchers would have popped in for a swift half after selling their wares at the market. Sadly the staff are also oldy worldy and if you are not a local expect to stand around waiting for the lone member of bar staff to deign to serve you. The three other customers in the pub will go instanlty silent until the bar maid/landlady has been rude enough to make you and your small party of four leave to another pub, and the reason, one of us asked for a tequila with salt. Heaven forbid that a pub would have salt behind the bar. so in closing i would happily recommend any of the other 10 or so pubs in emsworth and i would have to be near dehydration to even think about spending a penny in there ever again

Small dark pub to the east of Emsworth with good beer and a wide range of sausages
