Proper old school pub in a town dominated by bars. Lots of atmosphere and a friendly welcome. While traditional the pub is, nonetheless, light thanks to the expanse of windows. Ale was in tip-top condition on my visit - including the delicious Moorhouse's White Witch. A must visit and comfortable 10/10.

An attractive pub from the outside and a well done out interior. Couple of ales on which was in good nick. Music orientated, would probably be my boozer of choice if I lived here but I`m not posh enough! Well worth a visit or three.

This is a very quiet pub at the moment as it appears to be changing hands . However it has a good range of well kept real ales with Timothy Taylors Landlord being the staple - features Purity and Wye Valley amongsts others . Was in a couple of Saturdays and they had on a great ska/motown dj .......so decent music and top beer - struggling to give it less than ten

Decent enough town centre pub. Live music, two cask ales (London Pride & Purity Gold - no-one outside London likes Pride, surely?). Seems to be refurbished about every six months!

Now under new management - a great couple who care about the pub - the beer is still excellent and the regulars friendly. Band nights most Fridays and Saturdays plus a quiz most Sundays. Dart board and quizzy.

Ex landlord Nigel Traylor now has a new spot round the corner called Traylor's, super place, check it out! No less than 3 real ales on at any one time

CORRECTION: Found out Enterprise own The Gate, sorry M&B.

Was shocked to hear The Gate has closed!!!! Heard from one of the staff that M&B (if my memory sevres me) didnt get on with the manager/didnt like the way he ran things. I find that very hard to believe seeing as this placed was packed out most nights and was becoming one of Suttons popular entertainment spots. Well dont take my word for it just check out the below reviews, I think the top dogs at M&B need too.

Cracking little place! Live music seven days a week, beer is always spot on and staff are friendly. Music is good most of the time, open mic nights are worth a visit. The split level floor can get a bit tricky after a few beers though!

Fantastic pub with wonderful staff and landlord - the beer is kept beautifully and there's always a good variety available. If you like your pubs to be friendly and welcoming then this is one for you.

i'll have to agree with the comment below, i was also there that evening, the music wasn't the initial reason for visditing, but it sure is the reason we stayed

Paid another visit to The Gate last night and I thoroughly enjoyed myself. They had a open mic night on and we were graced with a fantastic rendition of Sultans of Swing which preceeded a awesome drum and guitar riff. The atmosphere was great but I did feel a little under age in there and I'm 22.

Popped in here for one during a pub crawl on 4 April 2009. Nice, friendly pub on a split level. Very small. The Black Sheep was delicious. I will be popping in here again.

First went here, after it changed owners, during a game of pub golf. I was unsure of what it would be like and was pleasently supprised. The staff were very welcoming and there was an open mic night on and some of our group went up to sing and were warmly welcomed by the band and the customers. Considering there was about 20+ of us trying to fit into an already busy small pub I was supprised at how welcoming everyone was. I've been here a few times since and still find the place very welcoming. Drink quality is good I had a nice pint of Black Sheep Best Bitter. The only negative, and I'm just nit picking, is that its a shame the place isn't bigger.

Looks an attractive pub from the outside with it's elevated position and leaded windows. Inside it has a bit of a reverse tardis effect. Most of the space is taken up by the bar and a stage area and there's very little seating. It's main attraction is the regular live music sessions but with poor acoustics and as everyone is so close to the band it can reach ear bleeding levels. The music was good though and we had an enjoyable evening. Just London Pride on draught I think.

excellent pub great barstaff and landlord ..if you like live music ,this is the place for you

Live music every day except Monday, so if that is your bag then you should enjoy it. Unfortunately the bands regularly use over half of the available area in the pub! The bar staff are friendly and don't run away and hide when you want to be served like they do in the Litter Tray and Sack.

Now reverted to it's old name of The Gate, bigger range of beer, new management.

Amongst the worst pubs i've ever been in. Unfirendly, beer is dreadful, always too hot as well.
