user reviews of Coal Orchard, Taunton

please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.

if the bar staff spent more time serving the customers , and less time playing games with each other , then there would not be so many people waiting
to be served.

No thanks

Decent selection of local beers served by friendly, knowledgeable bar staff.

At least the Black Horse has now reopened Cellarbuoy now taking a percentage of it's clientele back.

I was surprised to read the reviews on this pub after my visit this week.

OK it's a 'spoons and we had to wait to get served and despite Cask Myarse the beeer was too cold, but........
The best Ham, egg and chips ever; the place was clean; the numpty alkies kept themselves to themselves.
It was an afternoon visit but it ticked a lot of boxes.

Still think the Camra discount sheme stinks though.

Even worse than before now that the nearby Black Horse has closed down, and its clientel started to use this already awful pub.
cellarbuoy - 3 May 2012 22:54
Awful spoons full of alcoholic old men dingy inside too.
3/10

Oh, and Tauntons answer to Rab C Nesbitt & friends stare at you through the glass frontage as you pass by...life is tough on benefits !
kitchenightmares - 28 Feb 2010 10:27
not a good wetherspoons - Perkin is better
kitchenightmares - 28 Feb 2010 10:21
Probably the worst Wetherspoons I've been in. Food takes agesand is of poor standard. Hardly any staff behind the bar. Beer poor. I won't be back.

Was having a bit of a McSpoons holiday so decided to give it a go and yep another typical Spoons. Barman was good, food was ping [ping good and the toilets were upstairs. Why do I always waste valuable time looking for the toilets on the ground floor when they're always upstairs.

Not a bad visit all in all with your usual selection of clientele.
THEALMIGHTYLALA - 30 Aug 2009 22:25
O.K. by wetherspoons standards, but terrible by anyone elses
Dr_Pangloss - 23 Jan 2009 20:54
Its an ok pub, usual wetherspoons fare, but you know what to expect so its fine
hammers101 - 15 Dec 2008 21:06
I went in here recently and after waiting 15 minutes to be served I went back out the door and into the black horse next door. The black horse, for a pub with its reputation, wasn't bad at all - at least I got served !!!!!!!
Paris_Hilton - 18 Oct 2008 16:32
Not too bad for a 'spoons - typical slow service but ales were really quite good when I visited.
BobOs - 27 Aug 2008 00:01
This pub is slowing going seriously downhill in both how it's looked after and the type that drink there now. I'm not going there again.

Drinking at wetherspoons is a bit like shopping at lidles or getting your clothes from primark: O.K. for the cheapskates and tightwads.
Don't expect much and you won't be very disappointed

Camra types seem to like this place. They had about 8 ales on sale, and the barman rather bravely let me sample a few but they were mostly undrinkable and I resorted to a bottle of eurofizz of some sort.

This pub for a Wetherspoon is not as bad as you might expect reading the previous comments. Yes service might be a little slow but only when busy. They serve an excellent selection of local real ales, i love the new taunton ale and castle, and the staff are friendly and polite if you are to them.
artybiker - 6 Jul 2007 20:03
Two wetherspoons in such a small town?
This is marginally better than the other one, but that's a bit like saying torremolinos is better than Benidorm.
It's all relative.
Relatively speaking, they're both crap.
Brahmsandliszt - 14 May 2007 20:33
Good selection of cheap ales but not as well kept as other spoons ive tasted in, slow service , 7/10 overall
fat_beer_badger - 8 Mar 2007 21:27
If one wants to drink at wetherspoons pubs then I suppose slow service is what turns you on. However the service here is so slow that it is quicker to walk up to the other wetherspoon's pub in town, buy your pint there and walk back to the coal orchard.
Your mates will still be waiting at the bar in this shit hole,
cellarbuoy - 12 Jan 2007 22:25
It says so much about the standards of the pubs in Taunton, and the expectorations of the towns drinkers that this place suvives.
Mr Bob is right about the big windows; they should be of frosted glass, or have blinds (closed). The daytime drinkers seem to be afraid of daylight, and the pedestrians should be shielded from some of the ugliness that lies within.
TA010929 - 29 Dec 2006 15:25
Smaller than the other Wetherspoons (Perkin) but it takes longer to get a beer here. Like the rest of the chain it has a wide drink selection, nice loos, and no atmosphere.
anonymous - 10 Dec 2006 13:59
its just a regular wetherspoons... just beware, full of pervy old men
anonymous - 1 Dec 2006 12:34
Friendly bar staff and quick service. Cheap and good value Spoonies pub. But hate the big windows, square layout found it quite boring.
MrBob - 22 Jun 2006 14:34
and i meant that the staff are friendlier in coal than perkin.........woops............
anonymous - 8 Apr 2005 11:59
staff are generally friendlier in perkin than coal, however coal gets really cramped really easily whereas perkin is a cavern. food isnt as good here as in perkin!! still a pretty good place to start off a night out thou.

This is a nice little Wetherspoons pub, which is more than can be said for the other Wetherspoons pub just up the road, the name of which eludes me. Suffice to say that I have never experienced such rude staff in any pub worldwide!
