After a visit to the Burghley Club (not listed on here and definitely worthy of a mention), I ended up my visit to Peterborough at this branch of Wetherspoon's. It's more of the old men's version of the chain than the youngsters'/student hangout. Clientele included a few Bristol Rovers football fans and a guy being carted off in an ambulance. There is plenty of space. But it all feels a bit dated. Toilets are a good climb. Ales were Harviestoun Bitter & Twisted, Greene King Abbot, Ruddles Best, Ilkley Rombald & Adnams Anti Hipster Min. Ciders were Gwynt y Ddraig Black Dragon & Weston's Old Rosie & Marcle Hill. I've been to better 'spoons. But this one was adequate.

Large Wetherspoon's at the more downmarket end of the main shopping street in the city. Good ale selection but nothing special to reccommend it.

poor pub full of drunk chavs old men and foreign blokes who think its ok to grab grope any women they see ,terrible door staff they seem to be a law unto themselves they seem to single people out for no reason and bar them . was in there with group people one of the ladies was being pestered by couple rowdy blokes when one tried to touch her her partner intervened to stop him pushed him away and then was barred by door staff you couldn't make it up told them what happened not interested made complaint to manager next day she was appalled by it. we will now avoid this place.

I find this place terrifying. It is always filthy dirty and full of scary drunk people. Stay away!!!!!

Sometimes had a good choice of ales although most of the lowlife who frequent this place would be happy with any old rubbish you serve them. Get rammed at weekend like all the other chain mega pubs nearby. We knick name it The Last Chance Salon has you only go there when all the other good pubs have closed and you cant be bothered to go to the nightclub or snooker hall.

Beer was great, the real ale was fresh and clear and slipped down a treat, the food was even better, well cooked and tasted great. The downside, pub was full of the assorted characters, some very pleasent, the others not so. Did not like the rude comment someone shouted at my wife, why does this pub attract, Loonies, Conspiracy theorists, and creatures from the land of egocentricity, come on guys a pub is meant to be fun, you do not have to take as a mission in life.
One more thing the staff were bloody good as well, more friendly than the customers.

A nicely presented Wetherspoon's, but suffered from two of their recurring problems when I visited - slow service by a barman who seemed pretty clueless and an impressive looking array of pump clips that weren't actually backed up by their beers being available! Having said that, when I did manage to find one that was on - Milestone Lion's Pride - it was in excellent condition.

Not a bad Wetherspoons, especially of one goes in there whilst shopping or immediately after work. The beers are of a high standard with Wentworth always well-represented. Very typical Wetherspoons layout, but with the toilets quite a trek upstairs from beyond the far end of the bar, and with the staircase/landing seeming to provide a lot of extra drinking space

although myself and my family visit the college arms quite often we had always thought of it "as just another pub" until yesterday afternoon when we had a surprise birthday party there for my mums 70th,from 4pm when the first members of the family arrived to when we left around 8.30pm we were all treated like royalty. the meal was lovely but nothing compare to the service and helpfulness of the staff, who could not have been better. so i would like to say a big thank you to you all for making my mum's party such a success and for all your hard work. as far as we're concerned "you can keep the rest cos the college arms is the best"

What on Earth has happened to the Colllege Arms? It was never my favourite pub but I've been there many times and had good food there in the past. I took a group of friends there yesterday on the afternoon of the second May Bank Holiday. Here's what happened:
1. We were immediately told most (or perhaps half) of the drinks supposedly on tap were actually unavailable. This is when we should have left.
2. The barman apologised for serving us in plastic glasses but loads of people had been smashing the glass ones the night before. Great. A nice place then eh?
3. The bartender was very confused and did a spectacularly inept job of taking our drinks orders both times. He hinted he'd been doing a very long shift.
4. Later we ordered two sets of nachos for our table. Ten minutes later we were told that there weren't any nachos.
5. We ordered some cheesy chips instead (these were cheaper but we had to chase up the shortfall as this bartender - a different one now - cocked up the money). When these arrived, they had barely any cheese on them. We complained and they were replaced.
6. Three sets of people were thrown out by bouncers before half nine. We left.
Would anyone from the College Arms care to explain what on Earth is going on? Unless you enjoy inept service, a very small range of food and a violent unpleasant atmosphere, I'd wouldn't recommend the College Arms to anyone.
An absolute disaster.

This is a pub i used to work in about five years ago, it was nice to see the place has changed for the better. Better beer availability, better quality ale, and the food has much improved. All food and drink sold, are excellent and a fair price.

The management and staff really work hard to impress the customers. When i worked there the barmaids were only interested in becoming candidates for single motherhood, and the male staff just seemed bored with everything. Now we have a complete change, the new manager is getting rid of the C**P and bringing in families, surely the way forward for a well run pub.

Usually full of inebriated folk at an alarmingly early time, this place is best avoided on the day they pay out the dole in Peterborough ( Thursday I think ).

Typical Wetherspoons - cavernous and soul-less. Beers normally ok though.

Went to their recent beer festival - my first two choices from the 'menu' weren't available, and both of the ones I did get to try were pretty rank. Probably poor choices on my part, as on other occassions I recall the beer being quite good - and REALLY cheap!
Don't expect to strike up a conversation with strangers at the bar though - they either won't speak the same language or will have been there so long as to make any murmurings unintelligable.

Things have certainly improved in this pub since the new manager took over,He seems to be kicking out the idiots on a daily basis. By far the busiest pub in town but still the staff make me feel welcome. The ale selection is the best in town and also the best value for money. I do also like the Drapers Arms(also a Witherspoons) but there are not so many ales to choose from, they are rather more expensive and I find it hard to manouver my wheel chair as the furniture is very cluttered.

In my opinion, the current rating of 3.4/10 is very misleading. I visited on Saturday and Sunday last weekend and Ive no complaints about the patrons, the prices, or the selection and quality of the beers. The bar staff were on the ball, but maybe breakfast on Sunday morning could perhaps have been served a little bit faster

Since the new management was brought in the pub and atmosphere has started to improve. More staff, less smoke and better food. With regular checks on th toilets and service time brought down, the pub now has real potential. We'll just wait and see what happens from here :D

Pretty rough patrons, but usually friendly. Always busy and quite cheap prices.

The biggest collection of gamblers/quiz machines I have seen in England. Very spacious plenty of seats and the food is OK too.

Not a great place if you dont get on with travellers.
Not a great place if you like to get served.
Not a great place if you like nice tasting beer.
Not a great place if you like you beers clean.
Not a great place if you dont like scum.
Not a great place to take your loved one for a meal.

so ummm, not a great place. But cheap, very cheap.

lots of old blokes agreed, but still good beer and good service.7/10
fat_beer_badger - 26 Aug 2006 13:56
dead_like_me is only fradtionally unkind - there is, more charitably, a definite Care in the Community feel here. Give them their due, they do seem to look after the beer pretty well. But that's about it.
joegreen - 20 Mar 2006 13:16
Handy pub for work. Beer quality variable and reasonably cheap but not all of its on despite being on display at the bar.

Very popular at all times so can be difficult to get served. Now prefer the Drapers arms which is non smoking but its further from work so don't go too often.

this pub is starting to become very good and considering that i work there i should know.
dbowe - 30 Dec 2004 02:02
Ok OK so their not the fastest serving pub on fri/sat nights, but at 1.99 a pint of stella you cant moan...! Now i can get 5 pints with my tenner, not 3! BONUS

This is a great pub for Breakfast!

Excellent fresh cooked food, not helped however on a Sunday when they advertise 10 am opening and do not open till 11 am with the staff clearly visible at 10:05.

Unfortunately their beers tend to be in poor nick & far too COLD.

I su8ggest the red wine.

The worst Wetherspoons in the world? Probably.
Actually, this particular branch appears to be used as a "training pub". As soon as any member of staff proves themselves they are shipped off elsewhere! Getting served on a Friday or Saturday evening is a very tiresome task, and inevitably, when you do get served, the beer you ask for is "sorry not available" even though there are two pump-clips advertising it!
