user reviews of Crown, Hornchurch

please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.

Not surprised that 99% of the reviews here are poor. Just had the misfortune to speak to the landlord on the phone - plain rude. Hate to see good boozers close down but, based on his phone manner (or lack of it), I hope this bites the dust as soon as possible. Christ knows how these people survive when there's so much competition.

On 12 April 2016 (at around 8PM), I walked into The Crown and noticed that the Man City vs PSG football match was being shown on TV. I asked the barman (an overweight white English local guy in his 50s) if the pub would show the Real Madrid match. He pointed at the TV and he said 'Does it look like it?'. I explained that I hadn't been to the pub for a while and was not sure if there was a second TV screen (I was also hoping that he would switch channels given that there were NO customers in the pub at the time for reasons I now understand!). I told him that there was no need to be so rude given his words and the manner he delivered the message. He replied by saying 'F**k O*f'. I replied by saying that I would not step back into the pub and made a quick exit. The barbarian barman stared at me through the pub window even when I was on the pavement outside the pub. With cavemen like this serving behind the bar in English pubs, is it any wonder that so many are closing down. I am half English and half Spanish and I am sure that this behaviour would never be seen in Spain. It is shocking and I will cheer when this pub closes down. DON'T GO TO THIS PUB IF YOU VALUE GOOD CUSTOMER SERVICE. PS In my previous visit to this pub some time ago, the Guiness wasn't that great....I suspect that The Crown doesn't clean its pipes very regularly!

This poor pub is desperately in need of a lick of paint and some new carpets, i felt dirty just walking in there! Shame because it has such potential given the location and size.

1st time ever went in last night around 9.00pm after living in Hornchurch 51 years (33 years of legal drinking) - looking for post Tesco therapy. Walked out in under 10 seconds. Reasons; 1) Very smelly (ie; pre-smoking ban) 2) No decent beer 3) regulars making free with comments on strangers, therofore any potential customers being put off even if the first 2 points were not an issue.

There is much potential for this to be an above average surburban pub, especially with businesses like Neopost, B&Q and Tesco right on their doorstep - I hope whoever owns the freehold wakes up to what the Crown could be and has rhe cojones to make it into a pub that I would like to give a rating of not less than 7

Some good beers on tap and friendly customers and staff.
The shame is the pub has so much potential, but it is in desperate need of a refit, which would really benefit it and might bring a smile back to the face of the Landlord!

Music is great, lots of local talent and the jam night is fantastic on a Thursday, though your name can get scratched for a friend of the organisers.
If your a local the landlord and lady are friendly. If your not then they are both rude. The place needs a refit, everything is tired, sponge showing on the bench seats etc. Could be a great pub, but no love has been invested so its just an okay local's pub. Shame really.
snowangel - 25 May 2008 17:47
good pub to go to if you like live bands always free when i have been in there and the jam night is good on a thursday. get a nice pint of beer in there and the bar starff are freindly. what the pub does need is a re-fit and longer opening hours would go down there more often if it was open later than 11pm.
gogogogo - 28 Mar 2008 21:19
I think these previous comments are absolute b*****ks. There's nothing wrong with this pub. It's a pub. It has good beer, good music and I've don't know what bardtaff these people were talking too but I've never found them anything but friendly.
Maybe these people should stick to the 'Irish Theme' pubs in Romford or go to a wine bar.

I've been in this pub a few times and I feel compelled to say that it is probably one of the worst pubs that I've ever drank in (and I've drank in quite a few). Unfriendly staff, decor from the Victorian ages and the beer (when it eventually arrived) was disgusting. A pub to recommend to friends? No, but I'd strongly recommend it to people I don't like.

Lived close to this place and only went in there to meet people who were drinking down there as I hated it that much! Your feet stick to the carpet, your elbows get dirty leaning on the bar and as for the toilets say no more. The landlord (or manager not sure) is rude and im amazed no-one has chucked a bar stool at him, he is a p**s taker. To make matters worse its quite expensive as well, they definitely need another pub in the area, I feel sorry for the little old men who have to drink in there as they have nowhere else to go, bless them even they grumble about it. On a positive note, the band nights are quite good.

Most unwelcoming!!
The landlady never cracks a smile (Sorry love but customer service is your job!)
Particuarly unwelcoming to outsiders outside the zone of Hornchurch.
Took my girlfriend a few times and the looks she got because she knows how to enjoy herself..
Having said that, the girl with glasses is very pleasent..(Sorry dont know your name)

Tuesday night offers a quiz...but dont bother ..the winners are fixed and personal mates of the Dj himself.

I agree with RealAleMan, in that having to go to college to learn good manners is not something you should be proub of. Your parents should have taught you these at childhood.

Saying that the pub is not bad, and alright for a quick drink. It does need some work on the decor (maybe FeeFee has an excuse for this). I don't think this is a pub to stay all night in though. Alright before moving to Romford
MrWhiskey - 9 Apr 2006 20:33
Not a bad pub, but not a great one either. FeeFee, the bar staff who works at the pub states that they all have customer service NVQs. I am shocked that I pay my money to send staff to learn good manners, and basic bar work at college. Should good manners not come naturally?

The beer was not bad, and I agree that the decor is a little past its sell by date. The staff are not bad, but again not great. As for disagreeing with what customers who have ventured into this pub have to say, did they not teach you on your NVQ that the customer is always right?

popped in a while ago on way home from romford just to see what all the fuss was about , found it quite a nice pub , couldnt have anymore than a bottle due to driving , only stayed about twenty mins so cant really comment too in depth but seemed clean ,my mate had a pint n that tasted normal , but the decor commented on by anon 2/12/05 is correct could do with a lick of paint , but all in all ive been to better places but ive been to a lot worse .
romfordir - 30 Jan 2006 13:09
I am a member of this pubs staff- all i can say is that these people do not really know our pub regularly we have a packed house with the many live bands that we have performing.
As for the comments about staff one of a bar staff actually won the time FM 2005 barmaid of the year award where she went up against many other pubs and their staff in barking dagenham and havering. Our staff have all passed customer service Nvqs and maybe we are old fashioned in our views but we treat customers exactly how they treat us.Respect where respect is given.
Replies to other comments that have been made _
Jackrum actually hasn't got a good word to say about any licensed venue he has commented about.
The anonymous writer from the 2nd December your comments about the managers they are not managers they are landlords there is a difference- they have been in the business many years and you obviously dont have a clue about running a "local" pub.
The anonymous writer for the 11th September - beer can not go through the barrel a few times its impossible and again impossible for glasses to taste of other drinks all glasses go through a approved glass washer and washed with approved glass wash detergent and rinse aid after every use.
feefee - 3 Jan 2006 06:24
disgusting place, staff are rude and look like they despise everyone that walks through the door.
beer is terrible
prices are very steep

absolute dive, walk 5 mins and go to the durham arms
Jackrum - 7 Dec 2005 16:35
The couple that "Manage" the pub need to look up the word "Manage" in a dictionary they have not got a clue !!

The bar staff are very unfriendly and see every customer as an inconvenience....... The place looks like it was last decorated before the war !!!
anonymous - 2 Dec 2005 19:14
The staff were unfriendly and looked like they couldn't be bothered most of the time. The landlord didn't have a clue about what he was doing. The beer was disgusting - like it had been through the barrel a few times, and the glasses were so dirty they tasted of other drinks. We drank from bottles the whole evening.
