Ok pub,not great,but not awful
tottenhamsean - 16 Mar 2018 15:59
I know it's a personal thing but I can't see the fascination for this pub ,indifferent staff ,sticky tables, sticky bar, music way too loud, trouble getting served, all in all we can't be arsed with it. On the good side it seems too be doing a roaring trade so any pub that's open is a good thing.Nice garden as well .As I said its a personal thing so don't put us down too badly,it's just not one of our favourites in Greenwich. That would be the plume of feathers,

After seeing the family off the wife and I wanted another couple of drinks before heading home, so we walked to the 'spoons. Upon arriving it looked like freshers week with loads of teenagers and early 20 somethings shouting and screaming inside so we quickly swerved that and went to the Gypsy Moth.

Again another pub in Greenwich I hadn't been to for 7 or so years, always used to be a good pub with a good range of ales.

Very busy inside and out but the first thing that struck me was the level of the music that was playing, it was far to f'ing LOUD....jesus no need to be that loud...it wasn't even good music!

However the beer choice didn't disappoint, again 5 ales faced me with another 2 also on offer according to the chalk board. I choose a pint of Woodforde's Flagondry, the wife had a bootle of Sol....I know this pub is the height of tourist action being right by the Cutty Sark but nearly £9.00 for 2 drinks of which one was a pint of ale...blimey that's worse that Central London. No compliant re my ale it was very good.

I couldn't stand the noise anymore so we headed to the garden.

Decent pub, good choice of ales, fantastic location but please turn the music down!

The last time that I went here I had my jacket stolen, but I foolishly thought I'd give it the benefit of the doubt and try it again.

Having spent the evening in the outside area, at 10:30 they mysteriously and without warning locked us out. When we walked around and came back in through the unlocked front entrance, meaning to use the toilet before we left, they refused to allow us to do so in a needlessly confrontational way....and I really do mean needlessly and I really do mean confrontational.

Paying customers, who had quietly paid somewhat inflated prices throughout the evening, being refused the toilets in such a rude way, is totally unnecessary and bizarre.

These people are clearly only interested in obtaining cash on the given evening...and lack the intelligence to understand the value of repeat custom. To allow us one or two minutes to use the toilets as we left would have cost them nothing. They could have warned us that the pub was shutting - and they could have turned us away less aggressively.

Don't give them your money. It's almost humiliating to hand over hard earned cash to people like this.

You'd be better off heading to the multitude of other pubs in the area: The Lord Hood, The Coach and Horses, The Admiral Hardy etc. Perfectly good beer, facilities and atmosphere....but without the sociopathic staff.
nano_shed - 22 Apr 2014 00:47
Visited this pub late on Tuesday Dinnertime, all tables were set out to eat with very little Bar area set aside for "Drinkers Only". seemed to be populated by women with children. Several beers on including Doombar & London Pride. My LP was passable but not up to the standards of Fullers Pubs and did not warrant a second Pint. My mate however had the Doombar and said it was very good. Maybe the LP had not been pulled through enough, who knows. Pleasant enough staff.
Bitter_Man - 27 Feb 2014 11:48
On a very busy weekend, the staff were very pleasant, very efficient and the bar and tables were clean and tidied promptly in marked contrast to other tourist trap pubs in the area. Music unobtrusive and food decent.
hollyq - 14 Apr 2013 22:18
Like previous reviews, I can confirm that this is a decent pub, despite its proximity to the Cutty sark which by the law of averages suggest this pub should not have to try too hard to pull in the crowds.
Inside, there was a reasonable choice of real ale (mine was from Robinsons, Stockport), yes it was a little dear, but they all are round here, but still a lot cheaper than the Greenwich Union pub fairly nearby.
It is smart inside and worth a visit
SouthYorkshireman - 7 Mar 2013 20:54
Good pub in prime location. Quite a few tourists but also quite a few people who looked like they were from the area enjoying a drink. Big outside area and I seem to remember they have those heating lamp things (it was 0c so I did not venture out to check this). Service sometimes a bit slow but nothing terrible.
bigaerials - 24 Feb 2013 18:04
Superb location and nice tidy place. More of a restaurant by the looks of it.
Mappiman - 20 Nov 2012 17:34
Expensive pub for beer, breached the £4/pint for real ale here, only for this to be exceeded at the nearby Meantime brewery (not listed on BITE) at £4.40. Rammed full of people trying to make their drinks last all evening. Accent is on food, for the tourists mainly. Reasonable selection of beers.
Abteilung - 11 Nov 2012 18:52
Saturday night isn't the best time to visit - it was packed - standing room only. I think I would appreciate the pub more if people weren't in the way! I seem to remember about 4 interesting ales on - I tried the Itchen Valley junga ale. As usually for prime tourist area my pint (3.9% ABV) was £4.00. Mmmm.
Booze_Allen - 11 Nov 2012 15:37
Visited this pub for the first time with a mate who knows it well, on his recommendation. Whilst it obviously occupies a prime location in town close to all the obvious tourist lures (most notably the ever-impressive Cutty Sark), the Gipsy Moth actually surprised me by being a rather good pub in its own right, which didn't seem to be relying wholesale on a lazy by-numbers formula just to please an endless stream of visited who don't know any better. Granted, the pub is hardly great value, with cask ales starting at around 3.80 a pint, but sadly one must expect that in this district, particularly with all the Olympic fuss at the present time. Otherwise though, all indications were that it's worth a return visit.

The pub is traditionally-laid out but with some more contemporary touches; the conservatory and garden areas are perfect in dry weather to take in the buzzy nature of the nearby attractions. The decor suits the building and is both clean and stylish.

Service was excellent - sufficient staff had been deployed to cover the busy bar on a Saturday morning and they seemed friendly enough. Most importantly, they seemed to know how to pull a pint properly - though I would warn them to ensure they always fill glasses to the top (especially when 2 pints comes in at 7.70!).

The cask beer quality was splendid - a lovely crisp pint of Purity Mad Goose opened play, followed by Pale Horse. I was reliably informed by my compadres that the Roosters Yankee was in fine fettle too. During our stay another 2 ales were put on, which was an even more encouraging sign. I don't know if this is currently GBG-rated, but if not, it surely should be considered for entry.

Food seemed to be doing a brisk trade - again, not cheap, but observations suggested it looked like decent enough fare.

All in all a very pleasant session here and certainly one of Greenwich's better pub options. Recommended.
TWG - 7 Aug 2012 10:23
Perhaps someone from the Gypsy Moth's senior management has read the comments on here, and done something about the staffs attitude toward the customers there......
DuncanDisorderly - 29 Jul 2012 08:44
It may well be more for the tourists but you can sit outside looking at the Cutty Sark which is a better view than most places. Although it was an Olympic Saturday afternoon, the bar service was immediate and there was a good selection of beers namely London Pride, Hop Back Summer Lightning, Purity Mad Goose, Sunny Republic Beach Blonde and Doom Bar (which was not on).
paul_d102 - 28 Jul 2012 22:17
I totally agree with the previous comments, firstly that is really is a tourists Pub, and secondly that the customer service needs a LOT of improvement all round. We waited ages to get served a couple of Drinks here, and then, after making enquiries about the food arrangements, and where to sit ( as it was packed ) were told they didn't have time to pander to everyone, just go and sit down somewhere, and come back when you are ready, needles to say we didn't eat there, just had the one drink and left, never to return...........
DuncanDisorderly - 16 Jul 2012 10:17
It's a tourist pub really, so the lack of customer care sometimes shows. In my last visit, the service was slow and they looked understaffed. It wasn't helped by one tattooed barman complaining loudly to another barman about another member of staff that who was "f***ing rude," a "f***ing d***head" and a "f***ing c***", in front of a long queue of startled elderly customers.

I was with someone who recently worked in an American restaurant and she was amazed with the attitude. If you ask for an item to be replaced by another the answer is always yes, as the customer's happiness is important. When she asked, the barman had to ask a senior member of staff who said "I doubt it." What? You can't put something that's in your kitchen on a plate because the menu says no. It's a ridiculous attitude to customer service.
Vincenzo74 - 18 Jun 2012 11:40
After many years of enjoying this pub, we had a bad experience there yesterday. We ordered food, including starters and when the starters eventually came they were followed seconds later by the mains! Bad enough but when we complained the lady said we should have said we wanted them separately. She did take mains away and they came back fresh later but her attitude was amazing! Great beer, generally great staff (other waitress was great) but make sure you tell them your starters are starters!
Patsinbat - 7 May 2012 08:28
Brilliant pub - fantastically well run, great place. Get here early if the sun is out!
jimmysmith - 22 Nov 2011 16:04
Extremely well run and lively pub in the main pedestrian area of Greenwich next to the Cutty Sark. Not a gastro, just simple, fresh food well prepared. Waitress service - all very friendly (ours called Jess). Young crowd, well behaved. Thoroughly recommended.
romer1342 - 20 Jun 2011 15:17
Amazingly for a pub that has so many pros, The cons manage to out way them by a considerable margin.

This is a busy pub but you'd have thought they'd have worked how to cope by now the staff always seem to be struggling. (Even when its not that busy)

I thought that maybe the poor experience I had yesterday was a one off but now I've read up on the place I realise it was just business as usual

Save yourself some agro and go elsewhere

Hackneyal - 22 Jul 2010 12:49
I was very disappointed with the food. I always bring all my visitors who came to London to this pub. Last time, on Thursday 10.06.10, the food was very disappointing and very expensive. We had the roast chicken and were very surprised that the plate came with a very small chicken breast and half of a wing. I went to the bar to complaint and the staff member laugh at me saying that the size of the meal was ok. It wasnt ok, I have been here before and I had the chicken: it was half a chicken. It was a rip off. The meal was nearly 9.I should have left on the spot and leave all the food on the table, but I have education and manners, unlike the staff member who laugh at me.
I ask for the manager, a nice young guy. He said that the only thing I could do was to write my comments on this web page. I was not offered a bigger meal or anything. I was very upset that the management prefer a bad comment on the web that to sort the problems on the spot. It made me feel stupid in front of my visitors. I was going on about the nice food to them for days and they were very disappointed at the place and at me.
I will avoid this place like the plague. Will never take any friends and will not recommended to anyone.
I WILL NEVER GO THIS PLACE AGAIN AND IF I WAS YOU, I WOULD NOT GO THERE EITHER.

sevlon - 14 Jun 2010 12:36
This place is definitely going downhill unfortunately.
When I first visited, six or seven years ago, the food, especially the sausages, was worth travelling for: now it's just bland, standard pub grub.
The fabric of the building and decor are showing signs of ware and tear.
Running out of two of four real ales, the draught Budvar and the draught Erdinger by 18:30 on the Thursday before the bank holiday weekend is a cause for concern: is it's great location making the mangement complacent?
Nice beer garden though.
flashharry1965 - 4 Jun 2010 14:07
This pub is a textbook example of one that does so many things right, and so, so many things wrong. On the plus side, it has a good selection of real ales, and an interesting layout. Fine, good.

The bad's. Well, when visited last Saturday night the mens' toilets were flooded, the cubicle out of order, and there was no soap to be seen. Just terrible. Music far too loud, bar staff inattentive, and I've had one of the most dire 'steak and ale' pies my entire life. Mushrooms and sauce do not a pie make guys. If you want a pub you can enjoy, go to the Richard I up the road.
cgilson42 - 26 Mar 2010 13:48
One of the best nights out I've ever had. Fantastic mix of people. Lovely space. Good food. Just how you would want a pub at the 'fun' end of the scale to be. Great.
miffy4boys - 28 Feb 2010 14:41
Quite like this pub the beer range was very good and a nice relaxed atmosphere food menu offers a wide range of meals served all day. Polite man behind the bar was willing to help us find our next pub on our crawl through south east london. Worth a quick pint if your going on a river tour or passing
superseagulls - 24 Feb 2010 18:57
Had a meal here last week and was disappointed. The sausage and mash featured some very ordinary sausages which tasted just like a cheap supermarket offering and were overcooked. The pie was slightly better but low on meat content seeming to consist mainly of a watery gravy. Drinks wise things were better with a large range of well chilled continental lagers and ciders available. Didn't look so good for the real ale buffs though as most of the hand pumps I saw were turned around and only London Pride seemed to be available. Service was OK but it wasn't busy and from the other reviews I've read this is where it could fall down. I'm hoping things will improve as I really like the location and ambience of this pub but had a poor food experience on this occasion.
nrj746 - 1 Feb 2010 09:12
Seems a bit run down since my last visit, about five years ago, when I thought it was definitely on the up. A bit dingey now, and the only area light enough to read as I was having my lunch was draughty because the beer garden doors were propped wide open - in December! Of course the garden itself now suffers from the hoarding and shrouding around what's left of the Cutty Sark (not the pub's fault, of course) but that, all being well, will be remedied eventually. Food; drink; and service were all fine. well - I was almost the first in so it should have been!
Firedrake - 4 Jan 2010 16:22
awful awful service. the staff have no direction or work ethic whatsoever.. the food is pretty good and the bar and beer garden is really really nice.. its just a shame really about the service because they have a great range of wine beers and bar snacks.. yea, you can be waiting in the corner with no hope of getting served for 10mins sometimes easily
simonmaguire - 2 Jan 2010 17:44
Good beer, great garden, but the service at this pub is abysmal. The few staff tend to prefer serving their mates and chatting, and as a result, quite often we leave after one on busier nights.
dshunte - 28 Nov 2009 13:45
Looks dull from the outside, and while the initial bar area is OK, it's not that great - but the place starts to impress as you go further in and it opens up like Dr Who's Tardis. It becomes more and more interesting with potted plants, and then you reach the wonderful beer garden. It is cool and Mediterranean, and a pleasant place to sit. The two casks were off, but the place also offers Leffe and Sierra Nevada Pale Ale and Franziskaner Weissbier.

I liked this place.
SilkTork - 30 Sep 2009 17:41
This is a great pub to sit in, the ale isnt great but the cider range is impressive and the food looked really good. We didnt eat there but wished we had later on. The service wasnt that great, the staff were slow and held a conversation with each other whilst serving us. Whilst they gave us tasters of the ale, they didnt seem happy about it.
However, the atmosphere and setting were great and we had a really nice time, the garden is lovely and all the customers seemed nice, we got chatting with a few and ended up sitting with a group of people, and went away with a few numbers for future drinking sessions which is always good when you are fairly new to an area.
I would give this pub a 7, service let it down but a good place on the whole.

philday - 16 Sep 2009 11:19
Gypsy Moth's service is notoriously bad - the beer garden's great for summery days and the food is good pub grub, but people normally happy to get the next round are put off by the sloooow service. Food also takes forever to arrive, even when it's not busy.

I will continue to go there for the beer garden and will most likely to take visitors for a weekday afternoon meal - when we have plenty of time. But shame about the service!.
BigManBigThirst - 15 Sep 2009 09:46
I can go either way on this place.

Head in there on a summer afternoon and it's my favourite pub in the area. The staff are friendly, the quality and variety of drinks is good, the garden is massive. Haven't tried the food, but it's generally a nice place to go.

Get there in the evening though, it's a different story. It's too dark to see, massively overcrowded and, although the staff are still friendly, it takes an age to get served which causes problems in the tiny alleyway between the front (where a fair chunk of the seating is) and back (where the tiny toilets are).

All in all - if you're going for an afternoon pint, you could do a lot worse. Evening time, they still do a good pint but best take everything else into account.
tiredjay - 11 Sep 2009 23:26
publover25: Have to disagree. Had Scampi and chips which was brilliant. With regard to the service, I found the girls on the bar to be chirpy and agreeable, despite being very busy indeed. The biggest problem I find is that they never seem to have any glasware! After an hour or so of service, drinks will come in whatever the bar staff can find to put them in! Surely this pub takes enough money to be able to afford wine glasses?!

Same company as the PoW in Blackheath and they seem to have all the right kit in place, so why not here...?

Still had fun, despite the wait at the bar and the inevitable Greenwich DVD sellers who seem to get everywhere
SamBebb99 - 6 Aug 2009 15:33
went last week, lots of nice ciders/beers on boards.None available. has lots of tables outside so average about 50/60 people on a week night. 2 girls behind the bar. did their best, but hopeless,15 min wait for drink, then they closed kitchen. Commented to bloke at bar, says its always like this. Good location for tourists, but thats it. Walk up the road to Plume of Feathers, less crowds, little beer garden.wont have half your night spent waiting to be served.
Ramblingman - 27 Jul 2009 22:07
A nice pub with a great beer garden. However if there were a UK wide competition for the worse bar service, this place would be right there in the medal positions. The bar staff are so unbelievably dreadful that they more than negate all the positives of the place. Avoid it during peak times.
ShelfStacker - 26 Jun 2009 15:29
This is good for a quiet drink and a bite to eat on a weekday afternoon whenit's quiet. I have always found the food to be good. The ale is fine, there is a great selection of bottled and draught Belgian beers and draught Budvar.
Avoid like the plague in the evening though - hell on earth: defeningly noisy, absolutely rammed and the staff seem to loose the plot!

flashharry1965 - 12 Jun 2009 10:58
This pub has a cask marque and the pint of pride I sampled was very good and worthy of it, however this was all they had on tap so cannot comment on the other ales. The staff were awful, rude and clearly thought they had better things to be doing than serving the customers! The pub itself was nice, I sampled one of the platters and it was agreeable but clearly microwaved.
publover25 - 24 Apr 2009 15:10
Good pub, very decieving from the outside but when you get inside its a little warren of pathways and warrens. the beer could be a little cooler but all in all am looking forward to visiting this pub in the summer for the beer garden epierence
pub_boy - 30 Mar 2009 20:38
Good pub in a good location, the food is good too. The only thing working against it is the service, you can wait all night to get served, which is one of my pub bugbears, so ruins an otherwise decent pub.
lollygagger - 18 Feb 2009 13:26
this was a good pub, totally let down by its staff though who looked like they couldnt care less. the food was good, and quite reasonable. good location as well and full of fun people.
aussiefi - 16 Feb 2009 12:28
agree with the last review, I thought it kooked a bit poncy, has a cask marque but all they had was Pride, so we went to the Spoons for some choice
vinnnie - 7 Jan 2009 12:52
Lovely local pub HOWEVER too many trendies come in now and don't attempt to go there at the weekend. Used to be a favourite of mine but hate the new gastro feel. Best pub garden in Greenwich though.
bellahidalgo - 21 Nov 2008 14:27
I was at this pub on Friday night and wasn't very impressed at all. I'm a Greenwich resident and have been coming to the Gypsy Moth sporadically for the last 10 years.
It's one of those pubs that fills your pint/half right to the line and sometimes below, you can't really blame the staff for that since they have probably been asked to do this.
I was drinking Hoegaarden and the first half was fine (if under the line) but when I got a second it tasted very much like bleach. I took it back to the bar and they said that they thought it was fine but it could have been the new dishwasher tablets and they would give me another one. The second one tasted exactly the same and when I took it back (after getting everyone on my table to taste it) the barmaid said to me 'Maybe you just don't like the taste of Hoegaarden'. I've been drinking the stuff for over 7 years and found this really patronising especially since she was about ten years younger than me!
The next day a few of us had some quite nasty headaches (not due to the amount we'd consumed!!) which we think was down to either the glasses or the beer taps, either way not a good experience.
Carrot99 - 17 Nov 2008 11:45
Visited this pub and it was LOVELY!!! The food was SO good!! We couldnt stay for as long as we would have liked as we had tickets at the O2 booked but will be going back VERY soon!!!
The staff were so NICE!! There was a very polite young man who served us and told us all about the history of Greenwich which was so interesting!!!
go here!!!
sarahq - 5 Nov 2008 17:31
Not a bad pub. They serve up some interesting brews in there. Checked out the strawberry beer. Very nice.

Seating area outside is nice (on a nice day) and the staff seem friendly enough.
white_van_man - 5 Oct 2008 01:46
I cant say I noticed much difference refurb wise between Christmas and being in there 2 weeks ago, but then again I had had a lot more to drink at Christmas.

The garden was a really nice atmosphere when it was hot the other week but I suffer a bit being sat in the sun and could have done with more shade for such a big garden. We ended up sitting under the tree at the back and a pigeon did a very large poo on my friends head, which although it was hilarious as it was him and not me, BEWARE.

The bar staff seem chipper and up for a laugh but I think there were a lot of elements that I preferred a few years back before it got done up in a big way.
KittyP - 27 May 2008 17:49
excellent refurb, a lot brighter inside.
Food menu top end and fast service, will be great for the coming summer.
Uber good beer selection also.
David
locksmithDave - 13 Apr 2008 22:47
Closed for a refurb. Approx 4 weeks from what I've heard.
nrj746 - 8 Apr 2008 07:52
Was there on saturday, it was truly rubbish.
Garv - 4 Apr 2008 00:25
Went here 18 months ago and was mildly impressed. Returned recently and was less so. Had a terrible pint of Adnams Broadside, and despite the bar being quite long they were only serving in one small bit of it leading to an unseemly scrum to get served. The men's toilet was broken as it was on my previous visit. On the plus side the lager selection is decent (bottles of Birra Morreti), and it's got a big garden which I expect is good in the summer.
King_Pubby - 30 Mar 2008 20:44
went here with my missus the other day, good pub, busy, but didnt have too much trouble getting served.

seems quite studenty which is not really a bad thing and may explain why its not really in great nick and also the staffing problems (students tend not too go into work if they have a bit of a hangover and an essay to do - they jsut dont turn up then go and work in another bar when they need some cash.)

but this could also be down to a tight manager/owner who is making decent money and doesnt awant to fork out on a couple of extra shifts and a revamp.

didnt try the food.

The beer selection is good in a way, but real ale was two choices: youngs bitter or fullers porter - hardly inspiring , also both finished before we had left.

the fruli was good though and you get the impression the barstaff would be friendly if they had teh time!

would happily come here in the summer and sit outside with a fruli or hoegarden
SWmell0 - 27 Mar 2008 16:14
The breakfast here is excellent. We used to go to Desperados for a hangover soothing fry-up, but the amount you get here and the cost--5 make it well worth a visit. Definitely seem to be having some staffing issues at the moment though. Been there a couple of times over the past few weeks and on one of the occassions, the wait at the bar was looooooong. Good range of beer on. Nice location.
lekman - 1 Mar 2008 12:25
Did those who enjoyed themselves shift to a parallel universe? My mates and I have come here a couple of times, with the intention of a quick one before going clubbing. I don't know if we were masochists to come the second time but I suppose we didn't believe it possible to have such a bad experience twice. I suppose the second time it was a different type of bad experience but really, we will never darken the doors of this dump again at least not for a long while as really, there is not much that is good in this part of Greenwich. The Trafalgar on the other side of the university is really good though. The first time we found a table, although it was friday night it was a bit early so not too crowded. It took AGES to get served, however, and there was this one guy, sort of short and beetle browed who served us who was just plain rude. He was about forty on up I suppose, a bit old to be a barman I suspect and maybe this made him a bit annoyed. There was a cute bird who served us later who was much nicer, however but she was really busy. Anyway, we got some food as it was early. The food was strangely both cold and burnt. Most of it we just chucked. Bob (my mate) decided we should move on and what do you know? We had had two bags and one wallet stolen. Luckily the bags just had dirty gim clothes in as two of us had been to the gym and were going to drop off the clothes before the club. The wallet, however, had over 100 pounds. Went to the local rozzers but after waiting 40 minutes just to be seen we decided not to bother. Anyway, the evening picked up after that and we really went out on one to make up for it.
The second time, we went for a Sunday chill after being out the night before. I thought breakfast would be nice but it turns out that if you are not there between 10-12 no dice. How ridiculous, on a Sunday? It should be earlier and later cause if the food is not really good (which it isn't) you're certainly not going to make all the effort to be there just for those two hours if you want a fry up. My beer tasted strange (but that might have been the vitamins from the night before) and although the pub was nearly empty it took ages to get served again. There was also a lot of loud, ear bending noise coming from the building site next door. This is the Cutty Sark so maybe we will try again when the ship is finished (obviously my mates and I are Greenwich locals) but for now it's such a shame that a good location place like this is so rubbish.
michaelmolenda - 28 Feb 2008 14:09
This is a nice little old pub. I've visited here many times over the years (since I was a teenager!) but one thing I've noticed recently, especially this weekend was how short staffed they seem to be now. The staff were really polite but you could tell they were being stretched to their limits and were flat out and the cues at the bar were at times awful. But like others have said, the garden is wonderful and the kitchen provides nice grub. Coming here in the summer to sit in the garden is esential for a day out in greenwich
kathpower - 19 Feb 2008 21:11
We really liked it in here, although it was a Tuesday night and all other reviews seem to bitch about the busyness at weekends. Really big pub and garden area. Food was lovely and staff almost sickeningly eager to please. Didn't stink like some of the other pubs we went in! Although music was a bit tinny and shite.
Trevzy - 13 Feb 2008 00:13
I don't usually comment on these sort of sites either but having seen the comments below want to give the staff and manager a vote of confidence. I spend most Sundays in the Gipsy and have to say that I've only ever encountered courteousness and no...I don't know them personally. The pub used to have to have bouncers at weekends about five years ago but is now a much friendlier place to visit.
Dargento - 10 Feb 2008 19:20
Seems like this boozer's a marmite pub-you either love it or hate it! I had a good few pints here yesterday. Nice place but they really do need to get some more people behind the bar. I ended up ordering two pints at a time. The place was busy. No complaints about pub cleanliness but it does look like it could do with a lick of paint in places. Staff friendly. Good location but its a shame that the Cutty Sark isn't open.
Limeslade - 10 Feb 2008 13:23
I had a good afternoon enjoying the first rays of sun in the Gipsy yesterday. Queues at the bar suggest they might need to get more staff in but I had no problem with the toilets or anything like the previous reviewer suggests.
Midlands_Terrier - 10 Feb 2008 13:00
I don't usually comment on any of these sorts of sites, yet I had a crap experience at the Gypsy Moth that led me to it. This is just to say, I've had a look around a few pub review sites and this pub comes off very bad, except for the comments by a taylor35. I suspect this person is either the manager or a friend of the manager, so bear that in mind when reading their comments - they sound like they were written by a advertising company! Make up your own mind about that. Anyway, on to the review.
=====================================================
Me and my mates decided to come down to Greenwich for the day and after walking around for a nice while stopped at the Gipsy Moth as it looked cool. At first things went well, we ordered a few pints and perused the food boards which looked great. Then we tried to order breakfast. Couldn't get any service and when finally we did, we were told we ordered too late (when we first tried to get served, going up to the bar it was 20 minutes before the cut off time but 10 mins after by the time someone came to us). I tried to complain and it started - that rude manager everyone seems to go on about went off on one. This was recently, so no, it is not the old assistant manager. Anyway, we decided to leave but needed the bog before leaving. The toilets were filthy, their was 'brown stuff' all over the seat and the whole thing stank. We were shouted at for trying to take our drinks outside and when my mate Brom went to put his glass down he noticed it was filthy on the bottom inside. Spoiled our day so I wouldn't go there if I was you unless you really need to.
tonyarcher - 10 Feb 2008 02:28
Great pub-had a top night here on New Years Eve. The manager is actually a decent bloke doing a very difficult job in a very busy pub. Sounds like folk here might have had a few run-ins with the old assistant manager who definitely had a few anger management issues but has thankfully moved on!
ltaylor35 - 29 Jan 2008 16:28
Like many others, I had great hopes for this pub. Nice location and beer garden, reasonable-ish boho sub-hippy decor, good selection of beer etc...
However, the landlord is a nightmare. He appeared to be extremely drunk, or if not drunk then on something. Perhaps it was raw anger but I really thought he was going to assault me when I asked him, politely, about a problem I had. I am an ex-boxer and most people say I look it so this bloke, who is a campy scrawny guy is either Bruce Lee or insane. Luckily for him I have good self-control.
johnnyterumo - 28 Dec 2007 02:41
Gorgeous pub, nice beer and courteous bar staff. Unfortunately the last 2 visits were marred by the attitude of the landlord. The first time he was rude at my smoking outside the front door despite there being no notices directing around the side of the pub at the time. The second time, the food for the party I was with was not delivered within 45 minutes, and requests of its whereabouts just led to a sulky confrontational attitude. This was in the lead up to Christmas, so I realise the difficulty doing a shift in there at the time, but the manager, who is probably a decent bloke outside of work, is in the wrong job and needs a break or a change if he is to keep customers.
angela1 - 26 Dec 2007 17:15
In the past I posted an extremely poor review of this pub but must say after a few recent visits that it has really improved. There is still an insistence to only serve from one tiny section of the bar for some reason but the current staff don't seem to have the pretentious and cliquey attitude of some of their forerunners and the service is now generally friendly, quick and efficient.
nrj746 - 24 Dec 2007 11:31
Along with perhaps The Plume of Feathers, best pub in Greenwich, especially if you get a good spot in the garden and it's not too rammed. If it's too busy, you sometimes have a bit of a wait at the bar. An honest bit of fish and chips too, when its on the menu.
anonymous - 3 Nov 2007 11:21
I have to agree with the good and the bad. I have been insulted by the manager for walking through the door which he opened for me (after opening half an hour late) one lunchtime. He implied I had pushed in but he did not make it clear that he wasnt ready yet.
Lovely food though and good garden. I dont rate the speed of service and the staff never seem to really know anything but I do like it there.

Just go there when you are not in a rush for food or drink and you will be fine. Thats not a horrible comment, more that it is a leisurely pub. Manager is a complete loser though. I have seen him be moody to others also.
anonymous - 7 Sep 2007 17:02
Decent enough pub in one the nicest bit of Greenwich. Bit annoying that you can't smoke outside the front of the pub though without getting hassle. DAMN SMOKING BAN!!!!
anonymous - 20 Aug 2007 20:09
I sense a bit of a vendetta against this pub reading some of the dubious reviews. The Moth is one of the best bars in Greenwich-there are some real skanky places around the area that some of the comments here might be better directed at. It's in a prime location-the first pub you come to when getting off of the boat into Greenwich and has one of the best and biggest gardens I've been in. Because of this it can get rammed at times, which might explain the comments about waiting times. I can definitely recommend the food. There's no way the reviewer below who referred to the meals served here as slops can expect to be taken seriously. I think, like everywhere you go, there are good days and bad days as far as the kitchen is concerned but I've never had a meal here that could be described as slops. The staff have never been rude to me nor my friends but at the same time, they are so busy they don't have time to chat and ask how your day was either! My advice is to get there early, bag yourself a good seat in the garden and enjoy!
Shmugle - 15 Aug 2007 09:57
Not the best pub i've ever been in but enjoyable enough.Good range of draught lagers and tasty burger last time i was in. fit girlies at weekends too!!!
ltaylor35 - 15 Aug 2007 00:05
We just spent the night here and had one of the nicest bits o pub grub we've had. Excellent fish and chips and an africany chickeny thing. Can't say I agree with folk that are complaining about the foods. I'd go back when I'm next in Greenitchy. If you want a pub to gripe about-try the Mitre! Ha!
anonymous - 14 Aug 2007 23:21
Hey don't diss the Moth! It's one of the best pubs in Greenwich. Very busy which can be a hassle at times--I'd think twice about ordering food here on a sunny Saturday or Sunday afternoon and expecting to get it before 45-1hr. I went to the pub quiz they have on Thursdays now, which I think must be a new thing. Quite difficult but a laugh nonetheless. Hope the weather improves so we can spend more Sundays in the garden though.
ltaylor35 - 14 Aug 2007 23:14
I think that the preceding reviews are being a little harsh on the Gipsy Moth-it's always busy in summer and waits for food can be quite long. however, I am in the pub quite a lot and I've never found the staff to be ill-mannered. I think the pub can sometimes be a victim of its own success (sometimes runs out of ice and glasses) but I think the customers themselves can sometimes be the problem (not visiting the pub because a tile fell on your foot and your frightened if you come back you might be injured again????purrrrlease!!!). I would recommend the pub to anybody visiting Greenwich, if only to spend a lazy afternoon in the garden, which is the best in the area.
anonymous - 14 Aug 2007 22:57
I cannot understand how people in Greenwich put up with what is possibly the worst pub experience I have come across....

Only one half of the bar is opened with inadequate staffing on every occasion I have been there. In some cases taking up to 30 minutes to get served. There are never enough wine glasses and wine is then served in branded beer goblets. This was warm on my last visit. The food took 45 minutes to arrive last night (1 ploughmans). The majority of the staff are unhelpful and rude - you do get the impression that this is a legacy of the management and what they are left to deal with, rather than their natural manners.
piersh - 3 Aug 2007 13:17
I agree and would discourage anyone from spending time or money at this pub. I took my mum for Sunday lunch after a nice cruise down the river. We waited over an HOUR for our food and I asked the manager when we should expect our food, he snapped at me that it was a 45 minute wait and then came back a minute later saying our food was on the way and slammed the condiments and cutlery on the table. He then delivered what i can only describe as slop to the table My mother's was cold, potatoes hard as rock and mine was burnt and inedible. When I complained the manager was so rude and shouted at me! My mother asked for our money back and he had a full blown tantrum. I can honestly say I have never experienced rudeness like this before. Terrible food, managment and a complete shambles. I will never return here and discourage anyone else from doing so.
anonymous - 1 Aug 2007 11:56
Like other locals, I go to the Gipsy Moth knowing what to expect. Service is always slow and not particularly friendly, the food leaves a lot to be desired, and everything is overpriced. However, the pub remains popular with locals and tourists and nobody ever complains because they know upon entering what they're letting themselves in for. That said, I was there this past weekend and sustained an injury when the tile facing on the bench in the ladies' came loose and fell, in one solid piece, onto my foot. When I tried to report it the staff didn't want to know and I didn't receive so much as an apology for my having been hurt. The place appears to be falling into a state of disrepair and I am now wary about going back for fear of being injured again. There are plenty of other pubs around Greenwich with better service, better food and safer facilities.
Aspascia - 9 Jul 2007 11:52
Being local to the area I have been to this pub on numerous occasions and I have generally only had good things to report, however my last three visits have left me feeling that the standards have definitely slipped at the Gipsy Moth. The first slip was when taking my mother for lunch, her 'warm' salad was stone cold, as were half of the potato wedges, we are not ones to complain though and it was busy, so thought nothing of it. On the second disappointing visit, I ordered a large glass of ros wine, and even though the bottle was taken from the fridge the wine was very warm, so I took it back expecting to be offered a fresh one, instead the staff were very unhelpful, and just offered to put some ice in it, for over 5 a glass I expected more but as that was all I was going to get I accepted, and decided to change drink at the next round, I went for white wine and soda, unfortunately the gas had obviously gone, so I had white wine and water, however as the first complaint had been practically ignored, I didn't bother again and we just changed pubs instead!

I do like the Gipsy Moth, so when invited there to meet friends last week I accepted and put past mishaps behind me, however when my friend had a problem the staff were again very unhelpful and the manager himself was very rude and dismissive. Such a shame that staff's attitude to what are such small mishaps make venturing to this normally great pub not worth the bother, maybe its because the pub has a prominent tourist pulling position so they do not need to worry about retaining customers?
GreenwichLaserBlazer - 2 Jul 2007 12:36
Don't go to this pub. We lost 6.20 in the cigarette machine and the manager refused to help us at all and was extremely rude. In the past a friend has had a bag stolen there, and another ordered food which never came despite them asking three times. The staff didn't even apologise.
GreenwichPirate - 26 Jun 2007 12:05
Disappointing. Outside is lovely on a sunny day but food is average. Wouldn't rush back.

The service is slow and sometimes they will ignore you for about five minutes, which is hard with me as i am a big man. The range of beer is not very good and they always have the same ale.
anonymous - 7 May 2007 16:42
Nice place but the service is slow every time I go in there, which puts me off greatly. Heaving at the weekend and pretty busy on any weeknight.
JonW999 - 4 May 2007 19:14
We had lunch there on a sunny April day. Todays burger was good, and we tried Adnams bitter, and it was very tasty. Quiet and relaxing in the back garden of the pub.
hgr - 27 Apr 2007 11:27
Had a great time here at the weekend. Nice beer garden, good food, prompt service. Ideal place to stop for lunch and a few pints after getting the boat down the river.
anonymous - 20 Mar 2007 15:00
Spent a really nice afternoon here yesterday. It was really busy, especially at the bar but the staff were really polite an apologetic about the wait at the bar. The wall painting in the garden is really cool. Overheard the pubs closing for a few days - really looking forward to seeing it when it opens again
anonymous - 12 Mar 2007 11:44
was in the gipsy today for some lunch. wicked garden. murral on the wall is hilarious although don't look at it for too long if you're on acid!
anonymous - 8 Mar 2007 20:22
A nice pub with some good beers. I liked the sofas at the back and the chill out music- was very Brick Lane.

Certainly nice for a quiet beer in the week or maybe a start to a nice out.
lukemarson - 11 Feb 2007 10:23
the gypsy moth is one of the best pubs in greenitch-at least it's one of the few in the area not owned by greenwich inc. which can only be good. nice pint of star.
anonymous - 20 Jan 2007 20:53
Went here last night and had quite a nice time.
Pros-nice cosy decor. really nice beer
Cons-it was a bit smoky and the music wasn't my thing
anonymous - 18 Jan 2007 17:23
The comment below is such an exaggeration of the truth, I don't know whether I can be bothered to write this-except to say
a) the reserved sign was put on the table saying it was reserved from 5-30 but that "They'd be alright to stay there until 6"
b) one member of the party was told when he came to the bar after 5-30 that he was aware that the table had to be vacated by six and was completely fine with this. All food had been eaten by this time.
c) No-one was complaining about three lots of food being ordered, more that an understanding and agreement that the table had to be vacated by s-i-x, was suddenly challenged.

Love this site but pinch of salt, people. Pinch of that salt yeah?
ltaylor35 - 18 Jan 2007 17:10
I visited this pub on Monday the 14th of January with my girlfriend, we got to the pub in the early afternoon. When we arrived we could not find a table and waited patiently for one to turn up, as we wanted to order food. After about 20 minutes we got a comfy place in the back of the pub underneath their large mirror. We have had two or three drinks and ordered some food as we where waiting for more friends to arrive which they did just before 5. Our friends then too ordered drinks and food at about 5.10 but almost immediately after a reserved sign was plonked rudely on our table telling us that the table we had been sitting at all day and had more food arriving to, was now reserved for 5.30 which would give my friends less than twenty minutes to wait for their food to arrive and eat it before we were asked to leave. Naturally we queried this because it seemed a bit unreasonable to make us leave. However members of their bar staff still came over asking us to leave with food on the table and full drinks on the table this continued to happen until we were firmly told by someone that we definitely had to leave. So we stood up with no free tables to go to and lingered around the bar, just to watch their bar staff who had clocked off march straight over to the table we were forced to move from and sat down in front of us. Obviously we spoke to the manager to complain about the situation only to be completely shocked to find out that he was annoyed with us too for not leaving the table at 5.30. We literally couldnt believe this was happening, the manger proceed to be extremely rude to one of my friends who was female telling her to shut up just for raising a valid point. Then he had the cheek to tell us to leave the pub and then stropped off to sit with his bar staff at the table we were removed from. He even complained that we ordered food on 3 separate occasions, I dont know but I would have thought any bar manager would love to have people ordering so much food from them. Not only this but there was six of us planning on spending the rest of the evening there and we would have bought drinks all night.

I work in a pub in Greenwich and would like to say to those of you who think the staff at the Gipsy are..what was it now? Ah yes, rude, pretentious and only interested in serving people like them is, how many of you have actually worked in a pub? I don't mean some old mans boozer where all you get are the local drunks, I mean a damn busy pub in a very busy tourist area. I find the Gipsy Moth one of the best pubs in Greenwich for drinks range, food and atmosphere, and when I finish work me and my colleagues like nothing better than relaxing with a well kept pint.
brenbeck - 15 Jan 2007 12:05
Of course a pub like this is going to be busy - greenwich is very much a tourist area, especially in the summer, and its right next to the oldest tea clipper left in existance. The staff are incredably friendly, especially when compared to other pubs in the area. And would you rather have a staff member chat in depth to every customer on a friday night when there's 15 people waiting to be served? I guess then you could complain about having to wait ages at the bar...
anonymous - 25 Dec 2006 16:54
Thumbs up for the Gipsy Moth. We enjoyed ourselves.
anonymous - 20 Dec 2006 10:20
My girlfriend and I came here this past Saturday night (28 Oct) given our local H-File between watching Charlton's televised game at Newcastle. Predictably, it was busy - especially with the beer garden closing at 9.30 - but we did not have to wait too long to be served at the bar. I think the Vodka/Lemonade and Diet Coke we ordered came to just under 4, so make what you want from that if anything!

Seemed a wee bit on the pretentious side, but overall there was a relaxed atmosphere. My girlfriend was tired and wanted to continue our H-File, so we only had 1 brief drink, but I still feel my first review about this place on 13 July is apt for a Saturday night.

Searching_for_H_Files - 31 Oct 2006 15:52
Could be a nice pub but the staff and most of the customers are totally up themselves. Go here if you like to be served by morons who tend to serve people who look and behave like them rather than whoever should be next. I've given this place a number of visits as I thought that given it's position and decor etc. I must have just been unlucky on the other occasions I had been. Generally within 10 minutes though I really feel like hitting someone so rarely have more than one pint.
nrj746 - 22 Oct 2006 18:49
Nice pub but the food service here can be very slow. If you are planning on popping down for lunch here during the week - leave yourself at least two hours - even if it is quiet.
anonymous - 29 Sep 2006 13:17
Wouldn't go there if it was the last pub on earth - literally, even the br staff are up their own arse. Everything bad about drinking in Greenwich

1) Pretentious "trendy" half wits.
2) Bar staff who serve you with contempt.

Never go - in fact, don't even look.
easyskip - 23 Sep 2006 17:05
It may have the look of a traditional boozer from the outside, but The Gipsy Moth is anything but old fashioned inside. In fact, with the leather sofas and for the most part, DIRE background music, the place had more of a coffee shop feel to it. Quite ironic really, as there is a Starbucks next door! I had paid a visit once before, but left quickly as it was heaving and while it was packed on my visit yesterday, I did manage to grab a seat. It was god timing actually as the music picked up a little. (The Rolling Stones!) The beer garden out the back is nice, yet was busy and one felt like he was at a cattle market. All in all, its a not a bad place by any means, it just didnt quite work for me. Oh, and someone should teach the bar staff how to pour a proper pint of Guinness!
HTM69 - 11 Sep 2006 17:54
The Gipsy Moth can get a bit overrun at weekends or during periods of warm weather, but it's still one of the best pubs in Greenwich. Seems they've been a bit short staffed recently but things have picked up the last couple of times I went in there. You probably can get served a bit quicker in The Spanish Galleon as a previous revierw said butr then the place is full of chavscum and smells like an ashtray and toilet combined. So takes your picks I spose.
anonymous - 29 Aug 2006 12:34
I've tried to get a pint here twice now. Walk in at 6pm on a Tuesday and there's a queue at the bar. Tried again a couple of hours later, still a queue. Tried today, and still a queue.

If you like queues, this is the pub for you. If you like beer, then I would recommend elsewhere.
mrfalafel - 14 Aug 2006 19:32
My girlfriend and I came here for a drink Sunday afternoon (6 August) having been working on our tans in Greenwich Park, following H-File exploits. I have praised the Moth previously, but they appeared to be palpably under staffed today, given more people were likely to visit the boozer considering how hot it was. It was taking AGES to get served and we overheard a member of staff saying that there was no cutlery, no food and no ICE. On hearing this, combined with our impatience at not getting served, we decided to leave. We eventually brought drinks from a nearby newsagent (the old Cost Cutter) and sat by the Cutty Sark, as we were that thirsty and we also wanted to sit outside (though the beer garden in the Moth would probably have been packed anyway). No ICE though...poor. I'll stick to the Moth in the evenings then! Not impressed with the daytime showing here.
Searching_for_H_Files - 8 Aug 2006 13:29
Went here last Thursday when it was quite busy and hot but still got a seat in the huge beer garden! Unfortunately (although understandably as surrounded by residential properties) the garden closes at 9.30 when we were made to go back inside. Three real ales on although the Adnams Broadside went off not long after we arrived but the Bombadier was excellent and they also had Youngs and a fruit beer which I didnt try. A different range of lagers from the usual Stella/1664 including Staropramen. Price wise, as others noted, it was not a cheap pub with average cost of drinks over 3 on a round including beer, lager and single spirit with mixer. However considering the location, right next to the Cutty Sark, it probably wasnt bad.

Seemed to be plenty of staff on duty but still had to wait to be served earlier in the evening possibly partly because a new girl had started. Some staff seemed ok including Nina who was excellent. Overall a pleasant experience and I will be returning to make the most of the ale and the garden.
MartinRAF - 29 Jul 2006 16:43
Over priced and terrible service. Gets too busy on weekend nights, so I wouldn't bother. Go to the Spanish Galleon instead.
ST2004 - 27 Jul 2006 12:26
Popped in for a quick pint during the day on a rare visit to Greenwich, the pub seemed quiet and there was real ale on tap. Unfortunately we waited 10 minutes to get served while all 3 bar staff arsed around making a round of cocktails for the same customer, got fed up and left. Next time I'm in Greenwich I'll stick to the Spanish Galleon!
mannyowar - 25 Jul 2006 16:33
I have come to the Moth on a Thursday and Saturday night. If being honest, I didn't mind the lyric-less music and thought the bar staff on both occasions were quite friendly. I found the Moth an enjoyable place to entertain H-File victims as opposed to looking for them!! On both occasions, however, it can get packed quite quickly. Beer garden looks useful in the summer sun and I like the location of this boozer by the Cutty Sark. Would certainly come here again with the missus over a Thursday, Friday or Saturday night.
Searching_for_H_Files - 13 Jul 2006 12:44
Decent pub with some interesting beers. A tad pricey, which is why it wouldn't be my first choice being a student, but I guess given that it's a touristy place and right next to the Cutty Sark, it's understandable. Definitely worth a visit.
man_of_kent - 9 Jul 2006 17:49
This is an excellent pub by virtue of its expansive garden bar, which is awesome on a nice evening. Food is pretty decent as well.

The service though is abysmal, and the management obviously have no idea of appropriate staffing levels. Both inside and outside were full last night and there were atleast 20 people waiting to be served at any one time between 5 and 7. It took about 15 minutes to get served with only two slow staff on. Come on guys, sort it out!
Bagpipes - 12 May 2006 13:35
I like this place. It has a nice vibe. Granted, its not one for the die-hard beer drinker (limited selection to put it mildly).

Lots of attractive laydees at the weekend.
anonymous - 8 May 2006 12:26
Great pub with an excellent beer garden. Who cares if it's pricey if it keeps the chavs away.
anonymous - 4 May 2006 17:50
I took my mum to Greenwich for the day to celebrate her 61st birthday on Saturday. We had dinner in the Gipsy Moth and were really impressed by the garden. The staff were really helpful when it came to selecting a bottle of wine and we received our food in good time. All in all, a very nice experience.
anonymous - 25 Apr 2006 00:27
Just spent a lovely Easter Saturday afternoon in the Gipsy Moth. Had to wait a while for our food, but was told that this was the case-the place was very busy-but who minds waiting a while when it's a long weekend and you've got beer! Staff were cheerful, garden superduper. I think that sites like these attract the complainers, so for balance-here's a thumbs up!
anonymous - 16 Apr 2006 09:16
Went in on a Thursday expecting it to be reasonably quiet and was surprised to see no space at all. Decent selection of beers and a nice atmosphere though and got served quickly, and an eclectic mix of younger people and more middle aged types made it quite homely. Would certainly go back there.
man_of_kent - 14 Apr 2006 17:44
We live in Greenwich and The Gipsy Moth is a fantastic pub, in fact its our regular. The pub has recently had a bit of a facelift and is now full of plants and flowers. It may be a coincidence, but my boyfriend and I were in the pub last Sunday and what the person below has written leads me to believe that they are the group my partner and I were near to and overheard. I'd have to suggest that the comments below are taken with a pinch of salt. One of the women in the party was behaving incredibly unreasonably and aggressively, even when it was proved that her claims over waiting time were exaggerated, and clearly did not want to listen or be helped. My boyfriend actually said that the manager was obviously a more patient man than he could be! We've only ever had good service and food here. A top spot for a night out or a lazy Sunday reading the papers. We love the Gipsy Moth!
anonymous - 8 Apr 2006 11:46
DO NOT GO TO THIS PUB!! I can not warn you too much about this place. Although the beer is good and so is the location - the manager spoils it by being a completely rude and un professional to the point of disbelief. His name is Andrew Jeffries and unfortunately if you have any complaints (which will probably be about him) you will only be reffered back to him. When we ate in there we waited for about 45 minutes for our food. When we asked where it was he replied angrily with some unhelpful remark. When we asked again 20 minutes later he said he couldn't stand difficult customers (I promise you that is all we said). Not sure if he had problems at home on that day but if you can't keep your temper under control you should not be in that job. Maybe he is frustrated in some other way! When our food arrived my chips were uncooked and greasy. The person I was with had been given the wrong food and when questioned Mr Jeffries almost hit the roof. I did not dare mention my chips after this as he stomped around the place like an angry old cat with piles. We never recieved an apology for all of this. We were made to feel like it was our fault. Places like this are the worst thing about London. I hope people will boycott this place with me.
anonymous - 4 Apr 2006 13:55
This pub has a great location and could be really fantastic. I may have just visited on a bad day, but the service for food was incredibly slow (over 45 minutes for fish and chips and burgers) and when the food arrived it was not as advertised on the board. There was no apology from the manager - who made me feel like I was inconveniencing him by complaining - instead he just threw a refund down on the table. Unfortunately there are so many tourists around here that he can probably afford to treat customers like this as theres no shortage of passing trade. Definite case of over promise, under deliver at the Gipsy Moth.
purplechick - 2 Apr 2006 20:00
This could be the best pub in greenwich, but it's overpriced and the staff are useless, as is the norm for a lot of pubs in greenwich. It does have a good garden, but that's about the only thing going for it.
anonymous - 28 Mar 2006 12:14
Only really worth going in the Summer because of the garden. It was quite nice a few years back before they ponced it up too much.
JamesW - 16 Mar 2006 01:01
Was in the Gypsy Moth last night, been before, I like it in there, busy midweek but we managed to get a table and were the last out. Staff were nice and polite and at under 3 for a pint of Staropranen is actually cheaper than nearby Lewisham prices for same beer (compared vs Marlows Bar which last time was 3 exactly). I would go back without hesitation as the atmosphere is nice and friendly.

As annual visitor with group of friends, always find the food good, beers good, atmosphere convivial. It sets you up for the day prior to visiting all the attractions of Greenwich.....and its just as you come off the river!!! Good Sunday lunch, reasonable value....worth a visit
Millport - 19 Jan 2006 11:04
That bloke from As If works behind the bar.
anonymous - 12 Dec 2005 12:57
Nice looking pub, but:
1/ it is expensive
2/ the waiters (especially the boss) are not nice when serving the tables
3/ it is crowded on the week-end (but it is not a reason to be mean with the customers)
4/ lots of tourists

Positive aspects:
a magician during week end
that's all I think.
Sorry but I REALLY DID NOT like it
anonymous - 10 Oct 2005 21:23
Good beers, but overpriced. Gets filled with the burberry brigade at the weekends. Closing the beer garden early is a mistake, especially in the summer month(s).
kriekboozer - 15 Aug 2005 18:51
The pub named after Sir Frances Chichester's boat also sits in the shadow of the Cutty Sark tea clipper.
Friendly staff, a lovely beer garden, decent food and relaxed chill-out sofas always encourage one to stay a little longer than intended.
Normally a very good vibe, even during mid-week.
Andy Mulligan - 9 Mar 2005 18:26
BASS or Whatever they are called now, recently changed this to a trendy sofa type offer. All very nice and dandy but then they walk away and spend no money on management or staff because as much as its not a bad looking place the service is always poor. Along with O'Neill's in Blackheath (same company, surprise surprise) surely the two most dis-improved pubs in London over the past few years...a bit like watching Man Utd and Liverpool get relegated to the third division....sad!
RAY AND JOHNChrBrNoe - 19 Aug 2004 20:55
What a location...what a waste of a location. The Gipsy moth has it all going for it but still succeeds in making a Pigs ear of it all. Poor Service, slack team and a waste of a good Pub and name and location. Who runs this...a big brewery company no doubt who have become so detatched from customers they should remove themselves from running pubs and become city boys as they wish. This was a good pub ten years ago but sadly not today.
MalSheryl - 19 Aug 2004 20:50
Upon entering the pub I tripped over a dog, which didnt really put me in a bad mood until the wallpaper blinded me... It was like Salvador Dali's nightmare, which is fine but not when you want a drink with your friends. On last orders we were told that we could only have half-pints, because otherwise we'd stay too long! We obviously complained to the manager, who couldn't even remember the names of his staff. The Coach is much better (in the market) and I agree with Laura regarding the Northern Guy.
Mr Bohannon - 15 Aug 2004 20:05
Nice pub you should be served within ten minutes and who heard of a beer garden closing at 9:30?
anonymous - 27 Jul 2004 03:53
Very overrated. Its difficult to get served, the landlord has an attitude of disregard to customers. The beer is ok and the food is good but way too expensive. I'd rather go to the Coach & Horses in the market (esp. for the Northern guy behind the bar! Mm!)
Laura - 7 Jul 2004 00:06
I used to love this place but it gets so busy now and I agree with a lot of the comments regarding service. Tables are often over spilling with empty glasses and full ash trays. Avoid.
Dan - 14 Jun 2004 15:44
Shocking service, especially for food. We waited an hour for our lunch. The staff wanders around with clueless looks on their faces, unaware who ordered what. Manager was incredibly rude. We were hoping to make this our new local, now we hope that people avoid it.
Jim - 31 May 2004 18:57
Rob (the previous manager) did wonders for this place. The manager now is so rude me and the lads wont be back in a pub we once felt was second home.
Dave Roberts - 25 May 2004 20:33
takes hours to get served... can't recommend it.
Jan - 20 Apr 2004 22:07
Much better since it changed hands nice and cosy
ian - 9 Mar 2004 15:19
This place has recently been decorated. It looks like Graham Nortans secret grotto. Gay & camp. Staff aren't anything special, it took 10 minutes to get served on a *WEDNESDAY* night... the staff were chatting away, ignoring me, and when I DID get served the SLOWEST dappiest girl served me. Was a nice pub in the Summer - one of my favourites but I won't be going back here. 3/10
James Newton - 22 Feb 2004 14:41
Not too bad but very expensive when you consider the Wetherspoons close by. Comfy seating and a good beer garden but nothing special. Nice food, but again, expensive. 6/10
Steven - 5 Feb 2004 18:07
very very expensive for very ordinary pub
andy - 5 Jan 2004 11:19
Went through a phase of really liking this pub but in retrospect it's nothing too special. Still good though. Greenwich seems to have a positive effect on all the pubs it plays host to. Nice buzz about the place.
Good for. A few Sunday jars
thenationofjames - 28 Nov 2003 16:02
went there after the rugby on saturday and everyone was still friendly depite the english trying their best to annoy the ozzies! nice food, bloke doing magic at the table and even my northern mate said it was alright.
Eleanor - 27 Nov 2003 17:16
Went there on a SUnday night and was served by the most rude girl. Her English was terrible (think she was chinese) and she spoke down to me. Apart from that its a nice pub, but Admiral Hardy round the corner has nicer staff! Excellant food, try the sausage and mash!
Laura Clifford - 4 Nov 2003 14:50
Nice beer garden, decent selection of beers. Wines a tad dear for the quality, could do with a couple of extra staff at weekends. The refit has, for once, improved the pub rather than turning it into yet another pointless All B*r One clone. good boozer.
Seb - 21 Oct 2003 16:48
I went there a few weeks ago on a date and although the bar seemed under-staffed, I was served quickly and efficiantly - on a busy Saturday night. Great atmosphere, loved it, will definately go back! Keep up the good work Gipsys!
Brian Cronin - 10 Sep 2003 16:14
good food loved the mussels but do avoid the steak sandwich its like cardboard. the rest of the meals my husband and i have had there have been top quality for a pub. do try!! friendly staff as well.
georgia - 22 Aug 2003 14:20
Rob the owner threw out my mates for no reason, don't go there
Buddy Johnson - 6 Aug 2003 18:21
very nice pub - Rob the landrord is great and makes everyone very welcome. The beers/lagers are always very good as well as the food and they don't show football like the dreadful auctioneer up the road so its nice to escape the mayhem
? - 22 May 2003 15:09
They've managed to pull of trendy & cosy. Varied wine list, dodgy music, amazing food. 8/10
Alicia Jackson - [email protected] - 22 May 2003 15:07
Lovely, lovely, lovely beer. The trendies can be a bit irritating, but the beer more than makes up for it - as do the friendly staff. Great place.
Aiden - 12 May 2003 01:24
Walked past it accidently (was a bit lost). The door staff were funny and nice, as were the staff. Good atmosphere. Everyone seemed to be having a good time. Nice beer garden too. Top menu, but pricey though XX
Lissa - 12 May 2003 01:17
Its not bad beer is a bit expensive. Not sure about the Butcher's block.
ian - 9 May 2003 11:08
Dump arty farty wine bar posing as pub
Ken - 2 May 2003 12:23
The Gi[sy Moth is a great pub. Friendly, good looking staff. Definately worth the extra money just for the talent behind the bar!!
Simon - 26 Apr 2003 01:35
This is a top pub, really really nice and deserves much better than its current rating!
Clare - 16 Feb 2003 18:56
Trendy yet welcoming pub that attracts a young crowd. A bit on the pricey side though.
Laura Russell - 29 Oct 2002 14:17
