Impressive looking building right in the middle of the shopping area and providing a welcome respite from the throngs of Christmas shoppers. This was the poorer of the two Wetherspoon's branches I visited in the centre of Coventry. It is set over multiple levels. I had to retreat to an upper level to find a spare table. This area had its own bar. But the beer selection was more limited. Most people were dining. Ales were Greene King Abbot & Fireside, Ruddles Best, Sharp's Doom Bar, Well's Bombardier Glorious English, Wychwood Hobgoblin, Banks & Taylor Santa's Slayer & Burton Bridge Santi-Freeze. Ciders were Old Rosie & Black Dragon. Handy if you're shopping.

Good place to eat, if they run true to their word that the room on the right is for diners only

Pretty impressive building, standard Wetherspoon's indoors, a pint of Abbott (2.10) was satisfactory & service was good. A pity the weather was vile on my little tour of Coventry as I might have seen more than the inside of average pubs.

I tend to agree with Spookyhead, though Wetherspoons tend to go up and down in quality frequently. The food quality seemed better than usual, though the menu is generic

The standard has gone downhill rapidly since the departure of assistant manager, Sean. The majority of the guest ales are always not ready to be served even though the pump clips would suggest otherwise. Fairly clueless staff who seem to have a problem topping up your pint after they've served it with a huge head. I was even informed by one that it had to have a big head to make it legal. You couldn't make it up. Increasingly this pub is one to avoid. Its a real shame after it had improved considerably.

Nice selection of ales in this JDW. Service seemed chaotic when I was in but this may have been due to Coventry Beer Festival being on?

Good selection of beers including iceberg, ice queen and ein stein - all very drinkable! Service was consistently fast - unusual for JDW but the Lloyds No 1 in Coventry was equally good at service earlier today too! Other JDW establishments look, read and learn

Up the hill from the bus station and a handy waiting room for the match day buses to The Ricoh. The beer selection was unremarkable, only one guest ale alongside Pedigree, GK IPA and Abbot but the quality was okay. The bar staff are efficient and friendly making this a very pleasant pub to visit.

Late review from November. Called in to see what festival beers were on, and enjoyed a Titanic and Badger beer, as well as one of the foreign ales. Quicker service than most JDW pubs, and an improvement from last visit.

Not bad for a Spoons which unusually had sufficient bar staff to cope with demand. Food was of reasonable quality. Not a bad selection of reasonability good ale. The one thing which lets this place down is the Atmospheric Lighting because in certain places you can barely see what you are doing.

Quite good for a city-centre 'spoons, with an excellent range of real ales on during the 'Novemberfest', including a very nice pint of Titanic Iron Cutain to round off the evening.

Good building, front windows opened with the sun shining, good pint - well worth a visit

Nothing seems to have changed very much in the eight months since the previous review.

My wife and I called in for a late lunch last Saturday (April 12) when the place was heaving with football supporters who were a bit noisy and boisterous, but apart from that they were no trouble. We opted to sit in the quieter dining area. Bearing in mind how busy it was, I was pleasantly surprised by the speed that I was served at the bar and by the short time that we had to wait before our food arrived. OK, the food was nothing special, but we didnt expect it to be otherwise, but it was adequate and at just over 7 for two meals, pretty good value for money.

Our visit was on one of the last few days of Wetherspoons Real Ale Festival. There was still a good choice of festival beers available, which at 1.49 is a pretty good price to pay for a excellent pint in a city centre pub (and 20p cheaper than in my local Wetherspoons)!!!

I seem to be the same wavelength as the previous reviewer because my rating for the Flying Standard is a 7/10 too.

Called here a few times during a recent weekend visit.
The place has a well-used feel to it and, as has been said, seems to be the haunt of the professional drinker.
However I have to say everyone was well-behaved during the day and early evening.
The cask beers were good and food adequate & well-priced, separate dining area.
On balance Id give it the thumbs up.
Would go again.
Rating = 7.

what more could you ask for if your on a mission to get twisted. all the usual fun of the spoons, cheapo drinks and jugs, the people in here are sound, totally harmless. one of the better places in town.

Usual wetherspoons, cheap beer and food, full of drunken old men who wet themselves and try to throttle each other over a roll up that has gone missing. still, ok if you like that sort of thing and are skint, if you find any nice girls there check to make sure, you never know whats lurking down there!! Seriously though, typical 'spoons venue but it is a bit rougher than most.

Forgot to mention that before trying the beer, we started with breakfast that was served short of some of the items advertised. This was rectified when I went and queued again to ask for the items. They also served other diners black toast, and the toast and preserves for some people arrived on the same plate as the breakfast - on top of the baked beans!!

Called in while visiting for Coventry beer festival but found it disappointing as the two beers we asked for were not on despite the pump clips facing the customer. An annoying trait and we gave up and left.

Recently revisited this pub after a gap of three years - not changed a bit. Slow service but a convenient starting point for a Coventry night out.

A Wetherspoons pub in the same mould as the rest. Whenever I have been in there, the service has been very slow. I was served two halves recently in different sizes of glass, neither of which were marked as half pint glasses with the required legal stamp! Popular with all ages but early evening seems to be full of rather drunk pensioners!
