user reviews of Jericho, Oxford

please note - reviews on this site are purely the opinion of site visitors, so don't take them too seriously.

Downmarket decor with severely upmarket pricing and short measures only topped up when requested. Can only appeal to people with more money than sense or foreign tourists who don't know better. My one and only visit was one too many.

This place has vastly changed since I last visited when living in Jericho in 2000. Went for food last night and it is much better than the horrible Yellow Card pub it was in those days. Three ales on (Doom Bar, Brakespear Gold and a dark beer from Leeds Brewery), the latter two which went down well. Staff friendly, food fine and the selection of gigs looked good. Worth a visit if in the area rather than avoidance as I would previously have recommended

Don't recognise the poor reviews for this place at all. A laid-back pub with plenty good food and drink and a really pleasant atmosphere. Service has always been very courteous and efficient whenever we've visited. Similar to its sister establishments the Cape of Good Hope and the Royal Oak, and none the worse for it.

Nice, stylish venue and beers, if overpriced. Shame that the staff are often rather rude and arrogant and the food is badly cooked and frequently unavailable.
Considering what other great pubs there are in the Jericho area, within walking distance of the JT, it's not worth coming here as I've seen people put down and insulted, as well as staff drinking behind the bar.
Better pubs in the vicinity include the Victoria (lovely ambience and staff), the Bookbinder's and the Jude (down-to-earth for Jericho). A great area to go out in, so perhaps management know they will always have bums on seats.

Good pub with fantastic musical history (before Six Continents pi$$ed on it).

Was much better however - has gone VASTLY downhill in the last few months with, from what I can tell, a change of mgmt / staff. e.g. drinking a pint behind the bar at 2 mins past closing is not really recommended in the barmans handbook.

Our visit was not their finest hour food-wise. Significant chunks of the menu were off, items advertsied as side dishes turned out to have sold out (with no noticed offered or reduction in price, none of the specials were available, staff approached us three times to impart, and then correct, news on what was being served, and my female colleague could have done without the staff wearing oversize jeans and exposing "bottom cleavage" when bending over!

I like the Word Search above the bar, the decent garden and the ace snacks (including wasabi peas). This is one of Oxford's better pubs with live music upstairs and a decent atmosphere. Minor quibbles include the overrated burgers with salad-cream infested 'slaw and a smugness (although not behind the bar) which has more to do with the town than the pub.

It's not that expensive, for Oxford, and it's a fantastically nice environment to spend an evening in. I'm not sure calling it 'trendy' is fair! It's just a nice pub with a little-above-average pint prices. I'm a massive fan.

Another of Mitchell and Butlers' oh-so-studied trendified gastro-pub-and-Belgian-lager places (see e.g. the Volunteer at Baker Street also). That said, they're not bad really - three decent guest ales on the pump here and the food looked nice (although they'd stopped serving it by 9.10pm when I asked, despite the menu saying until 10pm). Definitely better than the It's A Scream which used to be here (if I recall correctly).

good beer selection, usually good bands upstairs. Have had some passable food here too. Pricey a bit yes, but goes with the territory I guess..

A little expensive, yes. But well worth it. They have an excellent line of beers and the food is great (I've seen their kitchen, it's spotless). The music upstairs on weekends is a treat. I would go again.

Yes it's a trendy type place, but for the style it's not bad, and can't fault them for an interesting range of German beers on tap plus a good choice of continental bottles. Had a pretty good evening there. But have to agree with thedts on the pricing.

Vastly overpriced and morbidly painted bar. It seems to attract clientele who think it's stylish.
