i personally only go in here during the day and even then its a strange pub , full of strange people , when i say strange im not sure if i mean weird strange or bordering on the psychotic , either way they generally keep themselves to themselves unless your outside having a smoke and then you get pestered for a "spare smoke" unless they know you

on the upside the beer is cheap and quite well kept and the staff are friendly , typical wetherspoons/lloyds layout , fruit/quiz machines

An awful, awful place. I've had the unpleasant misfortune of being dragged here a few times by some friends, and I think on only one occasion it could be descrived as bearable. And that's if I'm being generous. Agreed with previous comments about the clientelle (however not as bad as Yate's!!) but it's the staff here that really get me annoyed. On a weekend night, you could order exactly the same round, but get charged totally different prices for it each time. When I questioned this to the manager, and asked for a receipt she said it wouldn't be possible as their tills can't trace back transactions. Their also do not display prices on their tills at weekends, which I think is extremely dodgy! When talking to the doorstaff about this (who are actually very friendly) he told me that the reason for the different prices, is that staff add drinks on to your order for themselves, or add on a couple of quid for their own pockets, which I think is disgusting. Avoid at all costs!

When this was the Lloyds no.1 bar I would have crawled over broken glass and hot coals to avoid going inside, such was the repulsive, chavtastic, braindead, nature of this lager-only "venue". However, passing by the other day I noticed that the toxic brand name of Lloyds has been all but removed and an attempt has been made to turn this into something more like a standard Whetherspoons pub. I am not sure whether this is still holds true at night, or whether the place reverts back to crap pseudo-nightclub mode, and frankly, I am not willing to find out.

What I can report is that during the day the place is quite relaxed and pleasant, attracts a reaonably well behaved and sedate cleintele. I was also pleasantly surprised by how clean and tidy it was on my visit, certainly compares well with the Ivory Peg and Edwards in that respect.

There were some real ales on offer including the ubiquitous 99p Greene King IPA.

Actually, I can now recommend this place for a couple of daytime pints if you happen to be at this end of Chelmsford. whilst by no means a classic pub it certainly rates an above average mark of 6/10, although I have to qualify that mark to daytime use only.

My bad. I meant to type "awful". (I can, believe it or not, spell. (Unlike most of the people who frequent this venue))

Poor service, smelling toilets and sticky carpet. Lack of any atmosphere and full of Chelmsford Chaz and ASBO crowd at weekends.

Not bad, however the only music is that played on TV's tuned into music channels, I haven't been back since i was 16 and the overbearing bouncer wouldnt accept my photocopied passport, he then called the police of all things! Who arrived just as we had left Yates (a far better bar) and were already long gone off to another pub! The guinness was quite good - this was St Patricks day, so i tried the guinness in several places

Not a bad little bar, though i get the impression it would like to be a club. Staff are friendly, beers good, if a very narrow selection, and let this be a warning to anyone, if you stock something, in this case Westons Old Rosie cider, then make sure that when someone wants something you actually have it prepared properly instead of it being cloudy and unserveable!

now i do like this pub , the staff (whenever ive been there anyway) seem friendly and normally have a laugh n a joke , the beers good and the foods not bad a few fruit machines and one quiz machine , of a night time turns into a mini night club complete with DJ , good bar for a good night out at reasonable prices
